Automorphism groups of curves with simple Jacobians

We classify all automorphism groups of smooth, projective, connected curves over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ with simple Jacobians. For every nontrivial group in this classification, we construct a family of curves with that automorphism group and prove that a density-one set of members has simple Jacobian. These families yield infinitely many new examples of unlikely intersections in the moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties.

A multivariate Strassmann theorem

By a theorem of Strassmann, a non-zero convergent power series in one variable over a complete non-Archimedean field has finitely many zeros, with an explicit bound on their number. We generalize this result to convergent power series in several variables, characterizing finiteness of the zero set and bounding its cardinality in terms of the reduction of the saturated ideal defined by the power series. We discuss how to make our result effective, under suitable assumptions, when working with approximate power series.

Algebraic theories in monoidal categories

We define a monoidal semantics for algebraic theories. The basis for the definition is provided by the analysis of the structural rules in the term calculus of algebraic languages. Models are described both explicitly, in a form that generalises the usual definition in sets; and from a category-theoretical point of view, as monoidal functors on suitable classifying categories. The semantics obtained includes as special cases both the semantics of ordinary algebraic theories in Cartesian categories, and the semantics of operads and multicategories over sets.
