The Collapse of Human Capital Ladders in Recessions

Using administrative data, we document that workers acquire more human capital at more productive firms. Recessions distort workers-firm sorting, flatten the job ladder and impact human capital accumulation, as workers match on average to worse firms. To quantify the aggregate relevance of these effects, we build a directed search model with aggregate risk and worker-firm heterogeneity, in which human capital accumulation depends on firm quality. We estimate the model and show that recessions have persistent negative effects on the productivity of worker-firm matches, with distortions in sorting and human capital accumulation accounting for approximately 35% of cumulative output losses.

Effects of the thin-film thickness on superconducting NbTi microwave resonators for on-chip cryogenic thermometry

Superconducting microwave resonators have recently gained a primary importance in the development of cryogenic applications, such as circuit quantum electrodynamics, electron spin resonance spectroscopy and particles detection for high-energy physics and astrophysics. In this work, we investigate the influence of the film thickness on the temperature response of microfabricated Nb50Ti50 superconducting resonators. S-shaped split ring resonators (S-SRRs), 20 nm to 150 nm thick, are designed to be electromagnetically coupled with standard Cu coplanar waveguides (CPWs) and their microwave properties are characterized at temperatures below 10 K. The combined contributions of the kinetic inductance LK(T) increase and the decreasing loaded quality factor QL, for thinner films, induce an optimum condition on the temperature sensitivity and resolution of the resonators. A noise equivalent temperature (NET) as low as 0.5 uK/Hz^(1/2), at 1 Hz, is reported for 100 nm thick resonators at 4.2 K. We also asses the possibility of implementing a multiplexed frequency readout, allowing for the simultaneous temperature tracking of several sensors along a single CPW. Such results demonstrate the possibility to perform a distributed cryogenic temperature monitoring, with a sub-mK resolution. Thus, the application of superconducting S-SRRs, eventually benefiting from an even higher LK(T), for a further miniaturization, as well as a back-end integration directly on-chip, can be envisioned for the accurate monitoring of localized temperature of devices operating in cryogenic conditions.

Longitudinal analysis of fetal MRI in patients with prenatal spina bifida repair

Open spina bifida (SB) is one of the most common congenital defects and can lead to impaired brain development. Emerging fetal surgery methods have shown considerable success in the treatment of patients with this severe anomaly. Afterwards, alterations in the brain development of these fetuses have been observed. Currently no longitudinal studies exist to show the effect of fetal surgery on brain development. In this work, we present a fetal MRI neuro-imaging analysis pipeline for fetuses with SB, including automated fetal ventricle segmentation and deformation-based morphometry, and demonstrate its applicability with an analysis of ventricle enlargement in fetuses with SB. Using a robust super-resolution algorithm, we reconstructed fetal brains at both pre-operative and post-operative time points and trained a U-Net CNN in order to automatically segment the ventricles. We investigated the change of ventricle shape post-operatively, and the impacts of lesion size, type, and GA at operation on the change in ventricle shape. No impact was found, except for moderately larger ventriculomegaly progression in myeloschisis patients. Prenatal ventricle volume growth was also investigated. Our method allows for the quantification of longitudinal morphological changes to fully quantify the impact of prenatal SB repair and could be applied to predict postnatal outcomes.
