Josephson effect with superfluid fermions in the two-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover

We investigate the macroscopic quantum tunneling of fermionic superfluids in the two-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover by using an effective tunneling energy which explicitly depends on the condensate fraction and the chemical potential of the system. We compare the mean-field effective tunneling energy with the beyond-mean-field one finding that the mean-field tunneling energy is not reliable in the BEC regime of the crossover. Then we solve the Josephson equations of the population imbalance and the relative phase calculating the frequency of tunneling oscillation both in the linear regime and in the nonlinear one. Our results show that the Josephson frequency is larger in the intermediate regime of the BCS-BEC crossover due to the peculiar behavior of the effective tunneling energy in the crossover.

Quenching dynamics of the bright solitons and other localized states in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the dynamics of binary Bose-Einstein condensates made of ultracold and dilute alkali-metal atoms in a quasi-one-dimensional setting. Numerically solving the two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations which accurately describe the system dynamics, we demonstrate that the spin transport can be controlled by suitably quenching spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi coupling strengths. Moreover, we predict a variety of dynamical features induced by quenching: broken oscillations, breathers-like oscillating patterns, spin-mixing-demixing, miscible-immiscible transition, emerging dark-bright states, dark solitons, and spin-trapping dynamics. We also outline the experimental relevance of the present study in manipulating the spin states in $^{39}$K condensates.

Shift of the critical temperature in superconductors: a self-consistent approach

Within the Ginzburg-Landau functional framework for the superconducting transition, we analyze the fluctuation-driven shift of the critical temperature. In addition to the order parameter fluctuations, we also take into account the fluctuations of the vector potential above its vacuum. We detail the approximation scheme to include the fluctuating fields contribution, based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov framework. We give explicit results for $d=2$ and $d=3$ spatial dimensions, in terms of easily accessible experimental parameters such as the Ginzburg-Levanyuk number $\text{Gi}_{(d)}$, which is related to the width of the critical region where fluctuations cannot be neglected, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$, defined as the ratio between the magnetic penetration length and the coherence one.

Effective field theory of bosons with finite-range interaction in a disordered environment

We investigate the low-temperature properties of a ultracold gas made of bosonic alkali-metal atoms with finite-range interaction under the effect of a disordered environment. The statistical characterization of the disorder is investigated within an effective-field-theory formalism for a generic spatial dimension $d$. Moving to $d=3$, where all the arising divergences are properly regularized, we focus on the depletion of both the condensate and superfluid densities. At zero temperature we obtain meaningful analytical formulas for the condensate fraction and the superfluid fraction which take into account the interplay among scattering length, effective range, and disorder strength.

A dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interspecies interactions

We report on the production of a $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable interspecies interaction and we study the mixture in the attractive regime, i.e. for negative values of the interspecies scattering length $a_{12}$. The binary condensate is prepared in the ground state and confined in a pure optical trap. We exploit Feshbach resonances for tuning the value of $a_{12}$. After compensating the gravitational sag between the two species with a magnetic field gradient, we drive the mixture into the attractive regime. We let the system to evolve both in free space and in an optical waveguide. In both geometries, for strong attractive interactions, we observe the formation of self-bound states, recognizable as quantum droplets. Our findings prove that robust, long-lived droplet states can be realized in attractive two-species mixtures, despite the two atomic components may experience different potentials.

Action Functional for a Particle with Damping

In this brief report we discuss the action functional of a particle with damping, showing that it can be obtained from the dissipative equation of motion through a modification which makes the new dissipative equation invariant for time reversal symmetry. This action functional is exactly the effective action of Caldeira-Leggett model but, in our approach, it is derived without the assumption that the particle is weakly coupled to a bath of infinite harmonic oscillators.

BKT-paired phase in coupled XY models

We study the effect of a linear tunneling coupling between 2D systems, each separately exhibiting the topological Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. In the uncoupled limit, there are two phases: one where the 1-body correlation functions are algebraically decaying and the other with exponential decay. When the linear coupling is turned on, a third BKT-paired phase emerges, in which 1-body correlations are exponentially decaying, while 2-body correlation functions exhibit power-law decay. We perform numerical simulations in the paradigmatic case of two coupled XY models at finite temperature, finding that for any finite value of the interlayer coupling, the BKT-paired phase is present. We provide a picture of the phase diagram using a renormalization group approach.

Quantum solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Bose mixtures

Recent experimental and theoretical results show that weakly interacting atomic Bose-Bose mixtures with attractive interspecies interaction are stabilized by beyond-mean-field effects. Here we consider the peculiar properties of these systems in a strictly one-dimensional configuration, taking also into account the nontrivial role of spin-orbit and Rabi couplings. We show that when the value of inter- and intraspecies interaction strengths are such that mean-field contributions to the energy cancel, a self-bound bright soliton fully governed by quantum fluctuations exists. We derive the phase diagram of the phase transition between a single-peak soliton and a multipeak (striped) soliton, produced by the interplay between spin-orbit, Rabi couplings and beyond-mean-field effects, which also affect the breathing mode frequency of the atomic cloud. Finally, we prove that a phase imprinting of the single-peak soliton leads to a self-confined propagating solitary wave even in the presence of spin-orbit coupling.

Superfluids, Fluctuations and Disorder

We present a field-theory description of ultracold bosonic atoms in presence of a disordered external potential. By means of functional integration techniques, we aim to investigate and review the interplay between disordered energy landscapes and fluctuations, both thermal and quantum ones. Within the broken-symmetry phase, up to the Gaussian level of approximation, the disorder contribution crucially modifies both the condensate depletion and the superfluid response. Remarkably, it is found that the ordered (i.e. superfluid) phase can be destroyed also in regimes where the random external potential is suitable for a perturbative analysis. We analyze the simplest case of quenched disorder and then we move to present the implementation of the replica trick for ultracold bosonic systems. In both cases, we discuss strengths and limitations of the reviewed approach, paying specific attention to possible extensions and the most recent experimental outputs.

Power spectrum and diffusion of the Amari neural field

We study the power spectrum of a space-time dependent neural field which describes the average membrane potential of neurons in a single layer. This neural field is modelled by a dissipative integro-differential equation, the so-called Amari equation. By considering a small perturbation with respect to a stationary and uniform configuration of the neural field we derive a linearized equation which is solved for a generic external stimulus by using the Fourier transform into wavevector-freqency domain, finding an analytical formula for the power spectrum of the neural field. In addition, after proving that for large wavelengths the linearized Amari equation is equivalent to a diffusion equation which admits space-time dependent analytical solutions, we take into account the nonlinearity of the Amari equation. We find that for large wavelengths a weak nonlinearity in the Amari equation gives rise to a reaction-diffusion equation which can be formally derived from a neural action functional by introducing a dual neural field. For some initial conditions, we discuss analytical solutions of this reaction-diffusion equation.

Polarization in a three-dimensional Fermi gas with Rabi coupling

We investigate the polarization of a two-component three-dimensional fermionic gas made of repulsive alkali-metal atoms. The two pseudo-spin components correspond to two hyperfine states which are Rabi coupled. The presence of Rabi coupling implies that only the total number of atoms is conserved and a quantum phase transition between states dominated by spin-polarization along different axses is possible. By using a variational Hartree-Fock scheme we calculate analytically the ground-state energy of the system and determine analytically and numerically the conditions under which there is this quantum phase transition. This scheme includes the well-known criterion for the Stoner instability. The obtained phase diagram clearly shows that the polarized phase crucially depends on the interplay among the Rabi coupling energy, the interaction energy per particle, and the kinetic energy per particle.

Collective modes across the soliton-droplet crossover in binary Bose mixtures

We study the collective modes of a binary Bose mixture across the soliton to droplet crossover in a quasi one dimensional waveguide with a beyond-mean-field equation of state and a variational Gaussian ansatz for the scalar bosonic field of the corresponding effective action. We observe a sharp difference in the collective modes in the two regimes. Within the soliton regime modes vary smoothly upon the variation of particle number or interaction strength. On the droplet side collective modes are inhibited by the emission of particles. This mechanism turns out to be dominant for a wide range of particle numbers and interactions. In a small window of particle number range and for intermediate interactions we find that monopole frequency is likely to be observed. In the last part we focus on the spin-dipole modes for the case of equal intraspecies interactions and equal equilibrium particle numbers in the presence of a weak longitudinal confinement. We found that such modes might be unobservable in the real-time dynamics close to the equilibrium as their frequency is higher than the particle emission spectrum by at least one order of magnitude in the droplet phase. Our results are relevant for experiments with two-component BECs for which we provide realistic parameters.

Asymmetric many-body loss in a bosonic double well

A Bose gas in a double well is investigated in the presence of single-particle, two-body and three-body asymmetric loss. The loss induces an interesting decay behavior of the total population as well as a possibility to control the dynamics of the system. In the noninteracting limit with asymmetric single-body dissipation, the dynamics of the populations can be obtained analytically. The general many-body problem requires, however, an adequate approximation. We use a mean-field approximation and the Bogoliubov back-reaction beyond mean-field truncation, which we extend up to three-body loss. Both methods are compared with exact many-body Monte-Carlo simulations.

Localized solutions of Lugiato-Lefever equations with focused pump

Lugiato-Lefever (LL) equations in one and two dimensions (1D and 2D) accurately describe the dynamics of optical fields in pumped lossy cavities with the intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity. The external pump is usually assumed to be uniform, but it can be made tightly focused too -- in particular, for building small pixels. We obtain solutions of the LL equations, with both the focusing and defocusing intrinsic nonlinearity, for 1D and 2D confined modes supported by the localized pump. In the 1D setting, we first develop a simple perturbation theory, based in the sech ansatz, in the case of weak pump and loss. Then, a family of exact analytical solutions for spatially confined modes is produced for the pump focused in the form of a delta-function, with a nonlinear loss (two-photon absorption) added to the LL model. Numerical findings demonstrate that these exact solutions are stable, both dynamically and structurally (the latter means that stable numerical solutions close to the exact ones are found when a specific condition, necessary for the existence of the analytical solution, does not hold). In 2D, vast families of stable confined modes are produced by means of a variational approximation and full numerical simulations.

Superfluid filaments of dipolar bosons in free space

We systematically investigate the zero temperature phase diagram of bosons interacting via dipolar interactions in three dimensions in free space via path integral Monte Carlo simulations with few hundreds of particles and periodic boundary conditions based on the worm algorithm. Upon increasing the strength of the dipolar interaction and at sufficiently high densities we find a wide region where filaments are stabilized along the direction of the external field. Most interestingly by computing the superfluid fraction we conclude that superfluidity is anisotropic and is greatly suppressed along the orthogonal plane. Finally we perform simulations at finite temperature confirming the stability of filaments against thermal fluctuations and provide an estimate of the superfluid fraction in the weak coupling limit in the framework of the Landau two-fluid model.

Equation of state and self-bound droplet in Rabi-coupled Bose mixtures

Laser induced transitions between internal states of atoms have been playing a fundamental role to manipulate atomic clouds for many decades. In absence of interactions each atom behaves independently and their coherent quantum dynamics is described by the Rabi model. Since the experimental observation of Bose condensation in dilute gases, static and dynamical properties of multicomponent quantum gases have been extensively investigated. Moreover, at very low temperatures quantum fluctuations crucially affect the equation of state of many-body systems. Here we study the effects of quantum fluctuations on a Rabi-coupled two-component Bose gas of interacting alkali atoms. The divergent zero-point energy of gapless and gapped elementary excitations of the uniform system is properly regularized obtaining a meaningful analytical expression for the beyond-mean-field equation of state. In the case of attractive inter-particle interaction we show that the quantum pressure arising from Gaussian fluctuations can prevent the collapse of the mixture with the creation of a self-bound droplet. We characterize the droplet phase and discover an energetic instability above a critical Rabi frequency provoking the evaporation of the droplet. Finally, we suggest an experiment to observe such quantum droplets using Rabi-coupled internal states of $^{39}$K atoms.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of fundamental states, vortices, and dipoles in two- and one-dimensional linearly coupled traps with cubic self-attraction

We introduce two- and one-dimensional (2D and 1D) systems of two linearly-coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs) with the cubic self-attraction and harmonic-oscillator (HO) trapping potential in each GPE. The system models a Bose-Einstein condensate with a negative scattering length, loaded in a double-pancake trap, combined with the in-plane HO potential. In addition to that, the 1D version applies to the light transmission in a dual-core waveguide with the Kerr nonlinearity and in-core confinement represented by the HO potential. The subject of the analysis is spontaneous symmetry breaking in 2D and 1D ground-state (GS, alias fundamental) modes, as well as in 2D vortices and 1D dipole modes (the latter ones do not exist without the HO potential). By means of the variational approximation and numerical analysis, it is found that both the 2D and 1D systems give rise to a symmetry-breaking bifurcation (SBB) of the supercrtical type. Stability of symmetric states and asymmetric ones, produced by the SBB, is analyzed through the computation of eigenvalues for perturbation modes, and verified by direct simulations. The asymmetric GSs are always stable, while the stability region for vortices shrinks and eventually disappears with the increase of the linear-coupling constant, $ κ$. The SBB in the 2D system does not occur if $κ$ is too large (at $κ>κ_{\max }$); in that case, the two-component system behaves, essentially, as its single-component counterpart. In the 1D system, both asymmetric and symmetric dipole modes feature an additional oscillatory instability, unrelated to the symmetry breaking. This instability occurs in several regions, which expand with the increase of $κ$.

Zero-dimensional limit of the two-dimensional Lugiato-Lefever equation

We study effects of tight harmonic-oscillator confinement on the electromagnetic field in a laser cavity by solving the two-dimensional Lugiato-Lefever (2D LL) equation, taking into account self- focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, losses, pump, and the trapping potential. Tightly confined (quasi-zero-dimensional) optical modes (pixels), produced by this model, are analyzed by means of the variational approximation, which provides a qualitative picture of the ensuing phenomena. This is followed by systematic simulations of the time-dependent 2D LL equation, which reveal the shape, stability, and dynamical behavior of the resulting localized patterns. In this way, we produce stability diagrams for the expected pixels. Then, we consider the LL model with the vortical pump, showing that it can produce stable pixels with embedded vorticity (vortex solitons) in remarkably broad sta- bility areas. Alongside confined vortices with the simple single-ring structure, in the latter case the LL model gives rise to stable multi-ring states, with a spiral phase field. In addition to the numeri- cal results, a qualitatively correct description of the vortex solitons is provided by the Thomas-Fermi approximation.
