A Cahn-Hilliard system with forward-backward dynamic boundary condition and non-smooth potentials

A system with equation and dynamic boundary condition of Cahn-Hilliard type is considered. This system comes from a derivation performed in Liu-Wu (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 233 (2019), 167--247) via an energetic variational approach. Actually, the related problem can be seen as a transmission problem for the phase variable in the bulk and the corresponding variable on the boundary. The asymptotic behavior as the coefficient of the surface diffusion acting on the boundary phase variable goes to 0 is investigated. By this analysis we obtain a forward-backward dynamic boundary condition at the limit. We can deal with a general class of potentials having a double-well structure, including the non-smooth double-obstacle potential. We illustrate that the limit problem is well-posed by also proving a continuous dependence estimate. Moreover, in the case when the two graphs, in the bulk and on the boundary, exhibit the same growth, we show that the solution of the limit problem is more regular and we prove an error estimate for a suitable order of the diffusion parameter.

Doubly nonlinear stochastic evolution equations

We present an existence theory for martingale and strong solutions to doubly nonlinear evolution equations in a separable Hilbert space in the form $$d(Au) + Bu\,dt \ni F(u)\,dt + G(u)\,dW$$ where both $A$ and $B$ are maximal monotone operators, possibly multivalued, $F$ and $G$ are Lipschitz-continuous, and $W$ is a cylindrical Wiener process. Via regularization and passage-to-the-limit we show the existence of martingale solutions. The identification of the limit is obtained by a lower-semicontinuity argument based on a suitably generalized Itô's formula. If either $A$ or $B$ is linear and symmetric, existence and uniqueness of strong solutions follows. Eventually, several applications are discussed, including doubly nonlinear stochastic Stefan-type problems.

Degenerate Kolmogorov equations and ergodicity for the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with logarithmic potential

Well-posedness à la Friedrichs is proved for a class of degenerate Kolmogorov equations associated to stochastic Allen-Cahn equations with logarithmic potential. The thermodynamical consistency of the model requires the potential to be singular and the multiplicative noise coefficient to vanish at the respective potential barriers, making thus the corresponding Kolmogorov equation not uniformly elliptic in space. First, existence and uniqueness of invariant measures and ergodicity are discussed. Then, classical solutions to some regularised Kolmogorov equations are explicitly constructed. Eventually, a sharp analysis of the blow-up rates of the regularised solutions and a passage to the limit with a specific scaling yield existence à la Friedrichs for the original Kolmogorov equation.

A stochastic Allen-Cahn-Navier-Stokes system with singular potential

We investigate a stochastic version of the Allen-Cahn-Navier-Stokes system in a smooth two- or three-dimensional domain with random initial data. The system consists of a Navier-Stokes equation coupled with a convective Allen-Cahn equation, with two independent sources of randomness given by general multiplicative-type Wiener noises. In particular, the Allen-Cahn equation is characterized by a singular potential of logarithmic type as prescribed by the classical thermodynamical derivation of the model. The problem is endowed with a no-slip boundary condition for the (volume averaged) velocity field, as well as a homogeneous Neumann condition for the order parameter. We first prove the existence of analytically weak martingale solutions in two and three spatial dimensions. Then, in two dimensions, we also estabilish pathwise uniqueness and the existence of a unique probabilistically-strong solution. Eventually, by exploiting a suitable generalisation of the classical De Rham theorem to stochastic processes, existence and uniqueness of a pressure is also shown.

Random separation property for stochastic Allen-Cahn-type equations

We study a large class of stochastic $p$-Laplace Allen-Cahn equations with singular potential. Under suitable assumptions on the (multiplicative-type) noise we first prove existence, uniqueness, and regularity of variational solutions. Then, we show that a random separation property holds, i.e. almost every trajectory is strictly separated in space and time from the potential barriers. The threshold of separation is random, and we further provide exponential estimates on the probability of separation from the barriers. Eventually, we exhibit a convergence-in-probability result for the random separation threshold towards the deterministic one, as the noise vanishes, and we obtain an estimate of the convergence rate.

The Energy-Dissipation Principle for stochastic parabolic equations

The Energy-Dissipation Principle provides a variational tool for the analysis of parabolic evolution problems: solutions are characterized as so-called null-minimizers of a global functional on entire trajectories. This variational technique allows for applying the general results of the calculus of variations to the underlying differential problem and has been successfully applied in a variety of deterministic cases, ranging from doubly nonlinear flows to curves of maximal slope in metric spaces. The aim of this note is to extend the Energy-Dissipation Principle to stochastic parabolic evolution equations. Applications to stability and optimal control are also presented.

An extended variational theory for nonlinear evolution equations via modular spaces

We propose an extension of the classical variational theory of evolution equations that accounts for dynamics also in possibly non-reflexive and non-separable spaces. The pivoting point is to establish a novel variational structure, based on abstract modular spaces associated to a given convex function. Firstly, we show that the new variational triple is suited for framing the evolution, in the sense that a novel duality paring can be introduced and a generalised computational chain rule holds. Secondly, we prove well-posedness in an extended variational sense for evolution equations, without relying on any reflexivity assumption and any polynomial requirement on the nonlinearity. Finally, we discuss several important applications that can be addressed in this framework: these cover, but are not limited to, equations in Musielak-Orlicz-Sobolev spaces, such as variable exponent, Orlicz, weighted Lebesgue, and double-phase spaces.

The Cahn-Hilliard equation with forward-backward dynamic boundary condition via vanishing viscosity

An asymptotic analysis for a system with equation and dynamic boundary condition of Cahn-Hilliard type is carried out as the coefficient of the surface diffusion acting on the phase variable tends to 0, thus obtaining a forward-backward dynamic boundary condition at the limit. This is done in a very general setting, with nonlinear terms admitting maximal monotone graphs both in the bulk and on the boundary. The two graphs are related by a growth condition, with the boundary graph that dominates the other one. It turns out that in the limiting procedure the solution of the problem looses some regularity and the limit equation has to be properly interpreted in the sense of a subdifferential inclusion. However, the limit problem is still well-posed since a continuous dependence estimate can be proved. Moreover, in the case when the two graphs exhibit the same growth, it is shown that the solution enjoys more regularity and the boundary condition holds almost everywhere. An error estimate can also be shown, for a suitable order of the diffusion parameter.

The stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility and logarithmic potential

We prove existence of martingale solutions for the stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility and multiplicative Wiener noise. The potential is allowed to be of logarithmic or double-obstacle type. By extending to the stochastic framework a regularization procedure introduced by C. M. Elliott and H. Garcke in the deterministic setting, we show that a compatibility condition between the degeneracy of the mobility and the blow-up of the potential allows to confine some approximate solutions in the physically relevant domain. By using a suitable Lipschitz-continuity property of the noise, uniform energy and magnitude estimates are proved. The passage to the limit is then carried out by stochastic compactness arguments in a variational framework. Applications to stochastic phase-field modelling are also discussed.

On a class of non-local phase-field models for tumor growth with possibly singular potentials, chemotaxis, and active transport

This paper provides a unified mathematical analysis of a family of non-local diffuse interface models for tumor growth describing evolutions driven by long-range interactions. These integro-partial differential equations model cell-to-cell adhesion by a non-local term and may be seen as non-local variants of the corresponding local model proposed by H. Garcke et al. (2016). The model in consideration couples a non-local Cahn-Hilliard equation for the tumor phase variable with a reaction-diffusion equation for the nutrient concentration, and takes into account also significant mechanisms such as chemotaxis and active transport. The system depends on two relaxation parameters: a viscosity coefficient and parabolic-regularization coefficient on the chemical potential. The first part of the paper is devoted to the analysis of the system with both regularizations. Here, a rich spectrum of results is presented. Weak well-posedness is first addressed, also including singular potentials. Then, under suitable conditions, existence of strong solutions enjoying the separation property is proved. This allows also to obtain a refined stability estimate with respect to the data, including both chemotaxis and active transport. The second part of the paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic behavior of the system as the relaxation parameters vanish. The asymptotics are analyzed when the parameters approach zero both separately and jointly, and exact error estimates are obtained. As a by-product, well-posedness of the corresponding limit systems is established.

Analysis and optimal velocity control of a stochastic convective Cahn-Hilliard equation

A Cahn-Hilliard equation with stochastic multiplicative noise and a random convection term is considered. The model describes isothermal phase-separation occurring in a moving fluid, and accounts for the randomness appearing at the microscopic level both in the phase-separation itself and in the flow-inducing process. The call for a random component in the convection term stems naturally from applications, as the fluid's stirring procedure is usually caused by mechanical or magnetic devices. Well-posedness of the state system is addressed and optimisation of a standard tracking type cost with respect to the velocity control is then studied. Existence of optimal controls is proved and the Gâteaux-Fréchet differentiability of the control-to-state map is shown. Lastly, the corresponding adjoint backward problem is analysed, and first-order necessary conditions for optimality are derived in terms of a variational inequality involving the intrinsic adjoint variables.

Refined existence and regularity results for a class of semilinear dissipative SPDEs

We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of stochastic semilinear evolution equations with a monotone nonlinear drift term and multiplicative noise, considerably extending corresponding results obtained in previous work of ours. In particular, we assume the initial datum to be only measurable and we allow the diffusion coefficient to be locally Lipschitz-continuous. Moreover, we show, in a quantitative fashion, how the finiteness of the $p$-th moment of solutions depends on the integrability of the initial datum, in the whole range $p \in ]0,\infty[$. Lipschitz continuity of the solution map in $p$-th moment is established, under a Lipschitz continuity assumption on the diffusion coefficient, in the even larger range $p \in [0,\infty[$. A key role is played by an Itô formula for the square of the norm in the variational setting for processes satisfying minimal integrability conditions, which yields pathwise continuity of solutions. Moreover, we show how the regularity of the initial datum and of the diffusion coefficient improves the regularity of the solution and, if applicable, of the invariant measures.

Parameter identification for nonlocal phase field models for tumor growth via optimal control and asymptotic analysis

We introduce the problem of parameter identification for a coupled nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-reaction-diffusion PDE system stemming from a recently introduced tumor growth model. The inverse problem of identifying relevant parameters is studied here by relying on techniques from optimal control theory of PDE systems. The parameters to be identified play the role of controls, and a suitable cost functional of tracking-type is introduced to account for the discrepancy between some a priori knowledge of the parameters and the controls themselves. The analysis is carried out for several classes of models, each one depending on a specific relaxation (of parabolic or viscous type) performed on the original system. First-order necessary optimality conditions are obtained on the fully relaxed system, in both the two and three-dimensional case. Then, the optimal control problem on the non-relaxed models is tackled by means of asymptotic arguments, by showing convergence of the respective adjoint systems and the minimization problems as each one of the relaxing coefficients vanishes. This allows obtaining the desired necessary optimality conditions, hence to solve the parameter identification problem, for the original PDE system in case of physically relevant double-well potentials.

Doubly nonlinear stochastic evolution equations II

Complementing the analysis in [41], we investigate the well-posedness of SPDEs problems of doubly nonlinear type. These arise ubiquitously in the modelization of dissipative media and correspond to generalized balance laws between conservative and nonconservative dynamics. We extend the reach of the classical deterministic case by allowing for stochasticity. The existence of martingale solutions is proved via a regularization technique, hinging on the validity of a Itô formula in a minimal regularity setting. Under additional assumptions, the well-posedness of stochastically strong solutions is also shown.

Stochastic PDEs via convex minimization

We prove the applicability of the Weighted Energy-Dissipation (WED) variational principle [50] to nonlinear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations in abstract form. The WED principle consists in the minimization of a parameter-dependent convex functional on entire trajectories. Its unique minimizers correspond to elliptic-in-time regularizations of the stochastic differential problem. As the regularization parameter tends to zero, solutions of the limiting problem are recovered. This in particular provides a direct approch via convex optimization to the approximation of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations.

On the positivity of local mild solutions to stochastic evolution equations

We provide sufficient conditions on the coefficients of a stochastic evolution equation on a Hilbert space of functions driven by a cylindrical Wiener process ensuring that its mild solution is positive if the initial datum is positive. As an application, we discuss the positivity of forward rates in the Heath-Jarrow-Morton model via Musiela's stochastic PDE.

Local asymptotics for nonlocal convective Cahn-Hilliard equations with W^{1,1} kernel and singular potential

We prove existence of solutions and study the nonlocal-to-local asymptotics for nonlocal, convective, Cahn-Hilliard equations in the case of a W^{1,1} convolution kernel and under homogeneous Neumann conditions. Any type of potential, possibly also of double-obstacle or logarithmic type, is included. Additionally, we highlight variants and extensions to the setting of periodic boundary conditions and viscosity contributions, as well as connections with the general theory of evolutionary convergence of gradient flows.
