Equations for point configurations to lie on a rational normal curve

The parameter space of $n$ ordered points in projective $d$-space that lie on a rational normal curve admits a natural compactification by taking the Zariski closure in $(\mathbb{P}^d)^n$. The resulting variety was used to study the birational geometry of the moduli space $\overline{\mathrm{M}}_{0,n}$ of $n$-tuples of points in $\mathbb{P}^1$. In this paper we turn to a more classical question, first asked independently by both Speyer and Sturmfels: what are the defining equations? For conics, namely $d=2$, we find scheme-theoretic equations revealing a determinantal structure and use this to prove some geometric properties; moreover, determining which subsets of these equations suffice set-theoretically is equivalent to a well-studied combinatorial problem. For twisted cubics, $d=3$, we use the Gale transform to produce equations defining the union of two irreducible components, the compactified configuration space we want and the locus of degenerate point configurations, and we explain the challenges involved in eliminating this extra component. For $d \ge 4$ we conjecture a similar situation and prove partial results in this direction.

K3 surfaces with $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$ symplectic action

Let $G$ be a finite abelian group which acts symplectically on a K3 surface. The Néron-Severi lattice of the projective K3 surfaces admitting $G$ symplectic action and with minimal Picard number is computed by Garbagnati and Sarti. We consider a $4$-dimensional family of projective K3 surfaces with $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$ symplectic action which do not fall in the above cases. If $X$ is one of these K3 surfaces, then it arises as the minimal resolution of a specific $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$-cover of $\mathbb{P}^2$ branched along six general lines. We show that the Néron-Severi lattice of $X$ with minimal Picard number is generated by $24$ smooth rational curves, and that $X$ specializes to the Kummer surface $\textrm{Km}(E_i\times E_i)$. We relate $X$ to the K3 surfaces given by the minimal resolution of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-cover of $\mathbb{P}^2$ branched along six general lines, and the corresponding Hirzebruch-Kummer covering of exponent $2$ of $\mathbb{P}^2$.

On the cone of effective 2-cycles on $\overline{M}_{0,7}$

Fulton's question about effective $k$-cycles on $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ for $1<k<n-4$ can be answered negatively by appropriately lifting to $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ the Keel-Vermeire divisors on $\overline{M}_{0,k+1}$. In this paper we focus on the case of $2$-cycles on $\overline{M}_{0,7}$, and we prove that the $2$-dimensional boundary strata together with the lifts of the Keel-Vermeire divisors are not enough to generate the cone of effective $2$-cycles. We do this by providing examples of effective $2$-cycles on $\overline{M}_{0,7}$ that cannot be written as an effective combination of the aforementioned $2$-cycles. These examples are inspired by a blow up construction of Castravet and Tevelev.
