Neutrino Oscillations in Dark Backgrounds

We examine scenarios in which a dark sector (dark matter, dark radiation, or dark energy) couples to the active neutrinos. For light and weakly-coupled exotic sectors we find that scalar, vector, or tensor dark backgrounds may appreciably impact neutrino propagation while remaining practically invisible to all other phenomenological probes. The dark medium may induce small departures from the Standard Model predictions or even offer an alternative explanation of neutrino oscillations. While the propagation of neutrinos is affected in all experiments, atmospheric data currently represent the most promising probe of the new physics scale. We quantify the future sensitivity of the ORCA detector of KM3NeT and the IceCube experiment and find that all exotic effects can be constrained at the level of a few percent of the Earth matter potential, with couplings mediating $μ$-neutrino transitions being most constrained. Long baseline experiments like DUNE may provide additional complementary information on the scale of the dark sector.

Solar Neutrinos as a Probe of Dark Matter-Neutrino Interactions

Sterile neutrinos at the eV scale have long been studied in the context of anomalies in short baseline neutrino experiments. Their cosmology can be made compatible with our understanding of the early Universe provided the sterile neutrino sector enjoys a nontrivial dynamics with exotic interactions, possibly providing a link to the Dark Matter (DM) puzzle. Interactions between DM and neutrinos have also been proposed to address the long-standing "missing satellites" problem in the field of large scale structure formation. Motivated by these considerations, in this paper we discuss realistic scenarios with light steriles coupled to DM. We point out that within this framework active neutrinos acquire an effective coupling to DM that manifests itself as a new matter potential in the propagation within a medium of asymmetric DM. Assuming that at least a small fraction of asymmetric DM has been captured by the Sun, we show that a sizable region of the parameter space of these scenarios can be probed by solar neutrino experiments, especially in the regime of small couplings and light mediators where all other probes become inefficient. In the latter regime these scenarios behave as familiar $3+1$ models in all channels except for solar data, where a Solar Dark MSW effect takes place. Solar Dark MSW is characterized by modifications of the most energetic $^8$B and CNO neutrinos, whereas the other fluxes remain largely unaffected.

The anomalous dimension of spin-1/2 baryons in many flavors QCD

The anomalous dimension of spin-1/2 baryon operators in QCD is derived at leading 1/Nf order using the minimal subtraction scheme. A residual ambiguity, originating from the presence of evanescent operators in dimensional regularization, is parametrized by a function of the renormalized coupling. Our result is shown to agree with previous 2 and 3 loop calculations performed in two different renormalization schemes.

Light sterile neutrinos from a late phase transition

Light sterile neutrinos represent a well-motivated extension of the 3-neutrino paradigm. However, the impressive agreement between standard cosmology and data casts doubts on their existence. Here we present a class of scenarios that robustly avoids this tension. In these models the sterile neutrinos are light, chiral states of a new sector interacting with the Standard Model via the right-handed neutrino portal and, crucially, active-sterile neutrino oscillations require a phase transition in the hidden sector. We explore the hidden-couplings/critical-temperature plane and identify regions where several sterile neutrinos can be accommodated. A late phase transition is usually preferred and may also ward off a potential threat posed by the formation of topologically stable defects.

A dangerous irrelevant UV-completion of the composite Higgs

One of the most challenging hurdles to the construction of realistic composite Higgs models is the generation of Yukawa couplings for the Standard Model fermions. This problem can be successfully addressed in approximate conformal theories that admit a marginally relevant mixing between composite fermionic operators and the SM fermions. I argue that SU(3) gauge theories with light Dirac flavors in the fundamental representation feature all the ingredients under theoretical control, including a strongly-coupled IR fixed point, composite partners for all Standard Model fermions, absence of Landau poles at low energy, and a realistic phenomenology. These models acquire the status of compelling UV-completions of the SM if some spin-1/2 baryon operator has scaling dimension close to 2.5 within the conformal window, a possibility that can only be assessed via non-perturbative methods like lattice QCD. A distinctive collider signature is long-lived hadrons with fractional charges. Vacuum alignment is controlled by the Nambu-Goldstone bosons of the coset SU(4)xSU(4)/SU(4). With a technically natural choice of mixing for the top-quark, the exotic scalars with electro-weak charges acquire large positive masses and a compelling custodial-symmetric phenomenology is obtained. In the decoupling limit the symmetry breaking pattern effectively reduces to SU(4)->Sp(4) with a light Higgs.

Resonant Diphoton Phenomenology Simplified

A framework is proposed to describe resonant diphoton phenomenology at hadron colliders in full generality. It can be employed for a comprehensive model-independent interpretation of the experimental data. Within the general framework, few benchmark scenarios are defined as representative of the various phenomenological options and/or of motivated new physics scenarios. Their usage is illustrated by performing a characterization of the 750 GeV excess, based on a recast of available experimental results. We also perform an assessment of which properties of the resonance could be inferred, after discovery, by a careful experimental study of the diphoton distributions. These include the spin J of the new particle and its dominant production mode. Partial information on its CP-parity can also be obtained, but only for $J\geq2$. The complete determination of the resonance CP properties requires studying the pattern of the initial state radiation that accompanies the resonant diphoton production.

Warped Seesaw is Physically Inverted

Warped extra dimensions can address both the Planck-weak and flavor hierarchies of the Standard Model (SM). In this paper we discuss the SM neutrino mass generation in a scenario in which a SM singlet bulk fermion - coupled to the Higgs and the lepton doublet near the IR brane - is given a Majorana mass of order the Planck scale on the UV brane. Despite the resemblance to a type I seesaw mechanism, a careful investigation based on the mass basis for the singlet 4D modes reveals a very different picture. Namely, the SM neutrino masses are generated dominantly by the exchange of the TeV-scale mass eigenstates of the singlet, that are pseudo-Dirac and have a sizable Higgs- induced mixing with the SM doublet neutrino: remarkably, in warped 5D models the anticipated type I seesaw morphs into a natural realization of the so-called "inverse" seesaw. This understanding uncovers an intriguing and direct link between neutrino mass generation (and possibly leptogenesis) and TeV-scale physics. We also perform estimates using the dual CFT picture of our framework, which back-up our 5D calculation.

Direct detection of dark matter polarizability

We point out that the direct detection of dark matter via its electro-magnetic polarizability is described by two new nuclear form factors, which are controlled by the 2-nucleon nuclear density. The signature manifests a peculiar dependence on the atomic and mass numbers of the target nuclei, as well as on the momentum transfer, and can differ significantly from experiment to experiment. We also discuss UV completions of our scenario.

Spontaneous CP violation and the strong CP problem

We derive sufficient conditions that guarantee a robust solution of the strong CP problem in theories with spontaneous CP violation, and introduce a class of models satisfying these requirements. In the simplest scenarios the dominant contribution to the topological angle arises at 3-loop order in the Yukawa couplings. A variety of realizations are possible on a warped extra dimension, which can simultaneously address the Planck-TeV hierarchy. Experimental signatures of this approach to the strong CP problem include flavor violation and vector-like partners of the top or bottom quarks.

WIMPs and Un-Naturalness

The WIMP "miracle" suggests a new physics threshold ranging from the weak scale up to several tens of TeVs. Obtaining the correct dark matter density in many theories aiming to solve the hierarchy problem may thus require some amount of tuning of the weak scale, hinting at a possible connection between WIMP dark matter and unnaturalness. We point out that dark matter direct detection is a very efficient probe of these unnatural models, and that existing data already provide important clues to the nature of the associated WIMPs. We present a model-independent, relativistic analysis of the signatures of a gauge-singlet dark matter candidate of arbitrary spin, and discuss the current experimental bounds from LUX and XENON100. For complex WIMPs, dark matter direct detection is complementary to electroweak precision tests, and can even compete with flavor constraints if the dark matter has spin. Particularly relevant for future searches are couplings to the Higgs mass operator, which are expected to be large if the electroweak scale is finely tuned. Care is devoted to the RG evolution of the effective Lagrangian. We find that the CP-even scalar coupling to charm quarks is enhanced by about 20% compared to the one-loop estimate. When pushed in the unnatural regime, warped extra dimensions -- with or without custodial symmetry -- become attractive theories for flavor, the Higgs mass, and dark matter. The WIMP argument basically sets an upper bound on unnaturalness, whereas direct detection experiments select scalar or real particles as the most compelling dark matter candidates.

A Heavy "Neutralino" in Warped Extra dimensions

Generic extensions of the Standard Model that respect baryon and lepton numbers have accidentally stable particles. Typical examples are the lightest exotic neutral fermion, or "neutralino", and fields with non-trivial lepton and baryon charges. In this paper we show that an accidentally stable neutralino is a natural dark matter candidate in models with warped extra dimensions. We find that annihilation into other Kaluza-Klein resonances is often allowed and very efficient. The observed dark matter abundance may then be obtained with couplings of order unity and a compactification scale above the TeV. Light dark matter is also possible in the presence of unsuppressed couplings to the Higgs boson. In this latter case direct detection experiments will soon be able to probe a significant portion of the parameter space.

Constraining RS Models by Future Flavor and Collider Measurements: A Snowmass Whitepaper

Randall-Sundrum models are models of quark flavor, because they explain the hierarchies in the quark masses and mixings in terms of order one localization parameters of extra dimensional wavefunctions. The same small numbers which generate the light quark masses suppress contributions to flavor violating tree level amplitudes. In this note we update universal constraints from electroweak precision parameters and demonstrate how future measurements of flavor violation in ultra rare decay channels of Kaons and B mesons will constrain the parameter space of this type of models. We show how collider signatures are correlated with these flavor measurements and compute projected limits for direct searches at the 14 TeV LHC run, a 14 TeV LHC luminosity upgrade, a 33 TeV LHC energy upgrade, and a potential 100 TeV machine. We further discuss the effects of a warped model of leptons in future measurements of lepton flavor violation.

A Flavor Sector for the Composite Higgs

We discuss flavor violation in large N Composite Higgs models. We focus on scenarios in which the masses of the standard model fermions are controlled by hierarchical mixing parameters, as in models of Partial Compositeness. We argue that a separation of scales between flavor and Higgs dynamics can be employed to parametrically suppress dipole and penguin operators, and thus effectively remove the experimental constraints arising from the lepton sector and the neutron EDM. The dominant source of flavor violation beyond the standard model is therefore controlled by 4-fermion operators, whose Wilson coefficients can be made compatible with data provided the Higgs dynamics approaches a "walking" regime in the IR. Models consistent with all flavor and electroweak data can be obtained with a new physics scale within the reach of the LHC. Explicit scenarios may be realized in a 5D framework, the new key ingredient being the introduction of flavor branes where the wave functions of the bulk fermions end.

The Natural Composite Higgs

The discovery of the Higgs boson has put considerable pressure on theories that aim to solve the hierarchy problem. Scenarios in which the Higgs is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (NGB) of some new strong dynamics must possess a number of non-generic features in order to pass the progressively stringent collider bounds and simultaneously meet our naturalness criteria. Among these features are the existence of light fermionic partners of the top quark and an efficient collective breaking of the Nambu-Goldstone symmetry. The top partners have to be not only parametrically lighter than the other composites, but also weakly coupled to them in order to suppress unwanted flavor-violating effects. A Natural pseudo-NGB Higgs model should also be able to fit the LHC Higgs data without fine-tuning. Among theories with comparable compositeness scales, those that predict smaller corrections in the Higgs couplings to the standard model particles are therefore preferred. A concrete implementation of these ingredients is discussed in a scenario based on the coset SU(5)/SO(5). The fit to the current LHC Higgs data is significantly improved compared to the minimal scenarios, and a fully natural explanation of both the weak scale and the Higgs boson mass can be attained. An important role is played by an independent quartic Higgs coupling generated by UV-sensitive loops involving electroweak doublets mixing with the top partners. The collider signature of this framework is shown to be rather model-dependent; in particular, the exotic scalars can alter the phenomenology of the top partners at a qualitative level.

On Partial Compositeness and the CP asymmetry in charm decays

Recently, the LHCb and CDF collaborations reported the measure of an unexpectedly large direct CP asymmetry in D meson decays. In this paper we ask if new physics associated with Partial Compositeness could plausibly explain this result. We find that Composite Higgs models with mass scale around 10 TeV can account for it, while marginally satisfying all other flavor constraints in the quark sector. The minimal framework is however inadequate in the lepton sector due to the strong constraint from μ to e γ. This tension can be efficiently alleviated by realizing Partial Compositeness within Supersymmetry. The resulting models can saturate the CP asymmetry in D decays for superpartner masses close to the TeV scale and somewhat large A-terms. The supersymmetric realization of Partial Compositeness also offers a predictive and phenomenologically viable organizing principle for R-Parity violation, and may result in very distinctive signatures at hadron colliders. With or without Supersymmetry, the neutron EDM is expected to be around the present experimental sensitivity.

Probing Nonstandard Standard Model Backgrounds with LHC Monojets

Monojet events at colliders have been used to probe models of dark matter and extra dimensions. We point out that these events also probe extensions of the Standard Model modifying neutrino-quark interactions. Such nonstandard interactions (NSI) have been discussed in connection with neutrino oscillation experiments. Assuming first that NSI remain contact at LHC energies, we derive stringent bounds that approach the levels suggested by the Boron-8 solar data. We next explore the possibility that the mediators of the NSI can be produced at colliders. The constraints are found to be strongest for mediator masses in the 10^2-10^3 GeV range, with the best bounds above ~ 200 GeV coming from ATLAS and below from CDF. For mediators with masses below 30 GeV the monojet bounds are weaker than in the contact limit. These results also directly apply to light dark matter searches. Lastly, we discuss how neutrino NSI can be distinguished from dark matter or Kaluza-Klein states with charged lepton searches.

Unitarity and Monojet Bounds on Models for DAMA, CoGeNT, and CRESST-II

If dark matter interacts with quarks or gluons, the mediator of these interactions is either directly accessible at the LHC or is so heavy that its effects are encoded in contact operators. We find that the self-consistency of a contact operator description at the LHC implies bounds on the mediator scale stronger than those found from missing energy searches. This translates into spin-independent elastic scattering cross-sections at a level < 10^-41 cm^2, with direct implications for the DAMA, CoGeNT, and CRESST-II anomalies. We then carefully explore the potential of monojet searches in the light mediator limit, focusing on a Z' model with arbitrary couplings to quarks and dark matter. We find that the Tevatron data currently provides the most stringent bounds for dark matter and Z' masses below 100 GeV, and that these searches can constrain models for the DAMA, CoGeNT, and CRESST-II anomalies only if the mediator can decay to a pair of dark matter particles.

Color & Weak triplet scalars, the dimuon asymmetry in $B_s$ decay, the top forward-backward asymmetry, and the CDF dijet excess

The new physics required to explain the anomalies recently reported by the D0 and CDF collaborations, namely the top forward-backward asymmetry (FBA), the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in semileptonic b decay, and the CDF dijet excess, has to feature an amount of flavor symmetry in order to satisfy the severe constrains arising from flavor violation. In this paper we show that, once baryon number conservation is imposed, color & weak triplet scalars with hypercharge $Y=1/3$ can feature the required flavor structure as a consequence of standard model gauge invariance. The color & weak triplet model can simultaneously explain the top FBA and the dimuon charge asymmetry or the dimuon charge asymmetry and the CDF dijet excess. However, the CDF dijet excess appears to be incompatible with the top FBA in the minimal framework. Our model for the dimuon asymmetry predicts the observed pattern $h_d\ll h_s$ in the region of parameter space required to explain the top FBA, whereas our model for the CDF dijet anomaly is characterized by the absence of beyond the SM b-quark jets in the excess region. Compatibility of the color & weak triplet with the electroweak constraints is also discussed. We show that a Higgs boson mass exceeding the LEP bound is typically favored in this scenario, and that both Higgs production and decay can be significantly altered by the triplet. The most promising collider signature is found if the splitting among the components of the triplet is of weak scale magnitude.
