Interplay of Chiral Transitions in the Standard Model

We investigate nonperturbative aspects of the interplay of chiral transitions in the standard model in the course of the renormalization flow. We focus on the chiral symmetry breaking mechanisms provided by the QCD and the electroweak sectors, the latter of which we model by a Higgs-top-bottom Yukawa theory. The interplay becomes quantitatively accessible by accounting for the fluctuation-induced mixing of the electroweak Higgs field with the mesonic composite fields of QCD. In fact, our approach uses dynamical bosonization and treats these scalar fields on the same footing. Varying the QCD scale relative to the Fermi scale we quantify the mutual impact of the symmetry-breaking mechanisms, specifically the departure from the second order quantum phase transition of the pure Yukawa sector in favor of a crossover upon the inclusion of the gauge interactions. This allows to discuss the ``naturalness'' of the standard model in terms of a pseudo-critical exponent which we determine as a function of the ratio of the QCD and the Fermi scale. We also estimate the minimum value of the $W$ boson mass in absence of the Higgs mechanism.

Limit of vanishing regulator in the functional renormalization group

The non-perturbative functional renormalization group equation depends on the choice of a regulator function, whose main properties are a "coarse-graining scale" $k$ and an overall dimensionless amplitude $a$. In this paper we shall discuss the limit $a\to0$ with $k$ fixed. This limit is closely related to the pseudo-regulator that reproduces the beta functions of the $\overline{\text{MS}}\,$ scheme, that we studied in a previous paper. It is not suitable for precision calculations but it appears to be useful to eliminate the spurious breaking of symmetries by the regulator, both for nonlinear models and within the background field method.

Background Effective Action with Nonlinear Massive Gauge Fixing

We combine a recent construction of a BRST-invariant, nonlinear massive gauge fixing with the background field formalism. The resulting generating functional preserves background-field invariance as well as BRST invariance of the quantum field manifestly. The construction features BRST-invariant mass parameters for the quantum gauge and ghost fields. The formalism employs a background Nakanishi-Lautrup field which is part of the nonlinear gauge-fixing sector and thus should not affect observables. We verify this expectation by computing the one-loop effective action and the corresponding beta function of the gauge coupling as an example. The corresponding Schwinger functional generating connected correlation functions acquires additional one-particle reducible terms that vanish on shell. We also study off-shell one-loop contributions in order to explore the consequences of a nonlinear gauge fixing scheme involving a background Nakanishi-Lautrup field. As an application, we show that our formalism straightforwardly accommodates nonperturbative information about propagators in the Landau gauge in the form of the so-called decoupling solution. Using this nonperturbative input, we find evidence for the formation of a gluon condensate for sufficiently large coupling, whose scale is set by the BRST-invariant gluon mass parameter.

Functional Renormalization and $\overline{\text{MS}}$

Working with scalar field theories, we discuss choices of regulator that, inserted in the functional renormalization group equation, reproduce the results of dimensional regularization at one and two loops. The resulting flow equations can be seen as nonperturbative extensions of the $\overline{\text{MS}}\,$ scheme. We support this claim by recovering all the multicritical models in two dimensions. We discuss a possible generalization to any dimension. Finally, we show that the method also preserves nonlinearly realized symmetries, which is a definite advantage with respect to other regulators.

Scheme dependence of asymptotically free solutions

Recent studies have provided evidence for the existence of new asymptotically free trajectories in non-Abelian particle models without asymptotic symmetry in the high-energy limit. We extend these results to a general ${\rm SU}(N_{\rm L})\times {\rm SU}(N_{\rm c})$ Higgs-Yukawa model that includes the non-Abelian sector of the standard model, finding further confirmation for such scenarios for a wide class of regularizations that account for threshold behavior persisting to highest energies. We construct these asymptotically free trajectories within conventional $\overline{\text{MS}}$ schemes and systematic weak coupling expansions. The existence of these solutions is argued to be a scheme-independent phenomenon, as demonstrated for mass-dependent schemes based on general momentum-space infrared regularizations. A change of scheme induces a map of the theory's coupling space onto itself, which in the present case also translates into a reparametrization of the space of asymptotically free solutions.

BRST invariant RG flows

A mass parameter for the gauge bosons in gauge-fixed four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory can be accommodated in a local and manifestly BRST-invariant action. The construction is based on the Faddeev-Popov method involving a nonlinear gauge-fixing and a background Nakanishi-Lautrup field. When applied to momentum-dependent masslike deformations, this formalism leads to a full regularization of the theory which explicitly preserves BRST symmetry. We deduce a functional renormalization group equation for the one-particle-irreducible effective action, which has a one-loop form. The master equation is compatible with it, i.e. BRST symmetry is preserved along the flow, and it has a standard regulator-independent Zinn-Justin form. As a first application, we compute the leading-order gluon wave-function renormalization.

Asymptotic freedom in ${Z}_2$-Yukawa-QCD models

${Z}_2$-Yukawa-QCD models are a minimalistic model class with a Yukawa and a QCD-like gauge sector that exhibits a regime with asymptotic freedom in all its marginal couplings in standard perturbation theory. We discover the existence of further asymptotically free trajectories for these models by exploiting generalized boundary conditions. We construct such trajectories as quasi-fixed points for the Higgs potential within different approximation schemes. We substantiate our findings first in an effective-field-theory approach, and obtain a comprehensive picture using the functional renormalization group. We infer the existence of scaling solutions also by means of a weak-Yukawa-coupling expansion in the ultraviolet. In the same regime, we discuss the stability of the quasi-fixed point solutions for large field amplitudes. We provide further evidence for such asymptotically free theories by numerical studies using pseudo-spectral and shooting methods.

Critical Wess-Zumino models with four supercharges from the functional renormalization group

We analyze the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Wess-Zumino model dimensionally reduced to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric model in three Euclidean dimensions. As in the original model in four dimensions and the $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ model in two dimensions the superpotential is not renormalized. This property puts severe constraints on the non-trivial fixed-point solutions, which are studied in detail. We admit a field-dependent wave function renormalization that in a geometric language relates to a Kähler metric. The Kähler metric is not protected by supersymmetry and we calculate its explicit form at the fixed point. In addition we determine the exact quantum dimension of the chiral superfield and several critical exponents of interest, including the correction-to-scaling exponent $ω$, within the functional renormalization group approach. We compare the results obtained at different levels of truncation, exploring also a momentum-dependent wave function renormalization. Finally we briefly describe a tower of multicritical models in continuous dimensions.

Lee-Yang model from the functional renormalization group

We investigate the critical properties of the Lee-Yang model in less than six spacetime dimensions using truncations of the functional renormalization group flow. We give estimates for the critical exponents, study the dependence on the regularization scheme, and show the convergence of our results for increasing size of the truncations in four and five dimensions. While with our truncations it is numerically challenging to approach the three-dimensional case, we provide a simple approximation which allows us to qualitatively study the Lee-Yang model in two and three dimensions, and use it to argue the existence of further nonunitary multicritical theories including one which is relevant for the universality class of the Blume-Capel model.

Nonabelian Higgs models: paving the way for asymptotic freedom

Asymptotically free renormalization group trajectories can be constructed in nonabelian Higgs models with the aid of generalized boundary conditions imposed on the renormalized action. We detail this construction within the languages of simple low-order perturbation theory, effective field theory, as well as modern functional renormalization group equations. We construct a family of explicit scaling solutions using a controlled weak-coupling expansion in the ultraviolet, and obtain a standard Wilsonian RG relevance classification of perturbations about scaling solutions. We obtain global information about the quasi-fixed function for the scalar potential by means of analytic asymptotic expansions and numerical shooting methods. Further analytical evidence for such asymptotically free theories is provided in the large-N limit. We estimate the long-range properties of these theories, and identify initial/boundary conditions giving rise to a conventional Higgs phase.

Momenta fields and the derivative expansion

The Polchinski exact renormalization group equation for a scalar field theory in arbitrary dimensions is translated, by means of a covariant Hamiltonian formalism, into a partial differential equation for an effective Hamiltonian density that depends on an infinite tower of momenta fields with higher spin. A natural approximation scheme is then expanding the Hamiltonian in momenta with increasing rank. The first order of this expansion, one next to the local potential approximation, is regulator-independent and already includes infinitely many derivative interactions. Further truncating this down to a quadratic dependence on the momenta leads to an alternative to the first order of the derivative expansion, which is used to compute $η=0.03616(1)$ for the critical exponent of the three dimensional Ising model.

Asymptotically free scaling solutions in nonabelian Higgs models

We construct asymptotically free renormalization group trajectories for the generic nonabelian Higgs model in four-dimensional spacetime. These ultraviolet-complete trajectories become visible by generalizing the renormalization/boundary conditions in the definition of the correlation functions of the theory. Though they are accessible in a controlled weak-coupling analysis, these trajectories originate from threshold phenomena which are missed in a conventional perturbative analysis relying on the deep Euclidean region. We identify a candidate three-parameter family of renormalization group trajectories interconnecting the asymptotically free ultraviolet regime with a Higgs phase in the low-energy limit. We provide estimates of their low-energy properties in the light of a possible application to the standard model Higgs sector. Finally, we find a two-parameter subclass of asymptotically free Coleman-Weinberg-type trajectories that do not suffer from a naturalness problem.

Multi-meson Yukawa interactions at criticality

The critical behavior of a relativistic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric Yukawa model at zero temperature and density is discussed for a continuous number of fermion degrees of freedom and of spacetime dimensions, with emphasis on the role played by multi-meson exchange in the Yukawa sector. We argue that this should be generically taken into account in studies based on the functional renormalization group, either in four-dimensional high-energy models or in lower-dimensional condensed-matter systems. By means of the latter method, we describe the generation of multi-critical models in less then three dimensions, both at infinite and finite number of flavors. We also provide different estimates of the critical exponents of the chiral Ising universality class in three dimensions for various field contents, from a couple of massless Dirac fermions down to the supersymmetric theory with a single Majorana spinor.

An asymptotic safety scenario for gauged chiral Higgs-Yukawa models

We investigate chiral Higgs-Yukawa models with a non-abelian gauged left-handed sector reminiscent to a sub-sector of the standard model. We discover a new weak-coupling fixed-point behavior that allows for ultraviolet complete RG trajectories which can be connected with a conventional long-range infrared behavior in the Higgs phase. This non-trivial ultraviolet behavior is characterized by asymptotic freedom in all interaction couplings, but a quasi conformal behavior in all mass-like parameters. The stable microscopic scalar potential asymptotically approaches flatness in the ultraviolet, however, with a non-vanishing minimum increasing inversely proportional to the asymptotically free gauge coupling. This gives rise to nonperturbative -- though weak-coupling -- threshold effects which induce ultraviolet stability along a line of fixed points. Despite the weak-coupling properties, the system exhibits non-Gaussian features which are distinctly different from its standard perturbative counterpart: e.g., on a branch of the line of fixed points, we find linear instead of quadratically running renormalization constants. Whereas the Fermi constant and the top mass are naturally of the same order of magnitude, our model generically allows for light Higgs boson masses. Realistic mass ratios are related to particular RG trajectories with a "walking" mid-momentum regime.
