On uniform in time propagation of chaos in metastable cases: the Curie-Weiss model

Many low temperature particle systems in mean-field interaction are ergodic with respect to a unique invariant measure, while their (non-linear) mean-field limit may possess several steady states. In particular, in such cases, propagation of chaos (i.e. the convergence of the particle system to its mean-field limit as n, the number of particles, goes to infinity) cannot hold uniformly in time since the long-time behaviors of the two processes are a priori incompatible. However, the particle system may be metastable, and the time needed to exit the basin of attraction of one of the steady states of its limit, and go to another, is exponentially (in n) long. Before this exit time, the particle system reaches a (quasi-)stationary distribution, which we expect to be a good approximation of the corresponding non-linear steady state. Our goal is to study the typical metastable behavior of the empirical measure of such mean-field systems, starting in this work with the Curie-Weiss model. We thus show uniform in time propagation of chaos of the spin system conditioned to keeping a positive magnetization.

The particle approximation of quasi-stationary distributions: concentration bounds in the uniform case

We study mean-field particle approximations of normalized Feynman-Kac semi-groups, usually called Fleming-Viot or Feynman-Kac particle systems. Assuming various large time stability properties of the semi-group uniformly in the initial condition, we provide explicit time-uniform $L^p$ and exponential bounds (a new result) with the expected rate in terms of sample size. This work is based on a stochastic backward error analysis (similar to the classical concept of numerical analysis) of the measure-valued Markov particle estimator, an approach that simplifies methods previously used for time-uniform $L^p$ estimates.

The velocity jump Langevin process and its splitting scheme: long time convergence and numerical accuracy

The Langevin dynamics is a diffusion process extensively used, in particular in molecular dynamics simulations, to sample Gibbs measures. Some alternatives based on (piecewise deterministic) kinetic velocity jump processes have gained interest over the last decade. One interest of the latter is the possibility to split forces (at the continuous-time level), reducing the numerical cost for sampling the trajectory. Motivated by this, a numerical scheme based on hybrid dynamics combining velocity jumps and Langevin diffusion, numerically more efficient than their classical Langevin counterparts, has been introduced for computational chemistry in [42]. The present work is devoted to the numerical analysis of this scheme. Our main results are, first, the exponential ergodicity of the continuous-time velocity jump Langevin process, second, a Talay-Tubaro expansion of the invariant measure of the numerical scheme on the torus, showing in particular that the scheme is of weak order 2 in the step-size and, third, a bound on the quadratic risk of the corresponding practical MCMC estimator (possibly with Richardson extrapolation). With respect to previous works on the Langevin diffusion, new difficulties arise from the jump operator, which is non-local.

Condensation in Fleming--Viot particle systems with fast selection mechanism

We study the Fleming--Viot particle system in a discrete state space, in the regime of a fast selection mechanism, namely with killing rates which grow to infinity. This asymptotics creates a time scale separation which results in the formation of a condensate of all particles, which then evolves according to a continuous-time Markov chain with jump rates depending in a nontrivial way on both the underlying mutation dynamics and the relative speed of growth to infinity of the killing rate between neighbouring sites. We prove the convergence of the particle system and completely describe the dynamics of the condensate in the case where the number of particles is kept fixed, and partially in the case when the number of particles goes to infinity together with (but slower than) the minimal killing rate.

Weak error expansion of a stopped numerical scheme for singular Langevin process

We show expansion \textit{à la Talay-Tubaro} of a stopped numerical scheme for the Langevin process in the case of a singular potential. In order to achieve this, we provide estimates on the associated semi-group of the process. The class of admissible potentials includes the Lennard-Jones interaction with confinement, which is an important potential in molecular dynamics and served as the primary motivation for this study.

Recent advances in the long-time analysis of killed degenerate processes and their particle approximation

We review some recent results of quantitative long-time convergence for the law of a killed Markov process conditioned to survival toward a quasi-stationary distribution, and on the analogous question for the particle systems used in practice to sample these distributions. With respect to the existing literature, one of the novelties of these works is the degeneracy of the underlying process with respect to classical elliptic diffusion, namely it can be a non-elliptic hypoelliptic diffusion, a piecewise deterministic Markov process or an Euler numerical scheme.

Switched diffusion processes for non-convex optimization and saddle points search

We introduce and investigate stochastic processes designed to find local minimizers and saddle points of non-convex functions, exploring the landscape more efficiently than the standard noisy gradient descent. The processes switch between two behaviours, a noisy gradient descent and a noisy saddle point search. It is proven to be well-defined and to converge to a stationary distribution in the long time. Numerical experiments are provided on low-dimensional toy models and for Lennard-Jones clusters.

Convergence of the kinetic annealing for general potentials

The convergence of the kinetic Langevin simulated annealing is proven under mild assumptions on the potential $U$ for slow logarithmic cooling schedules. Moreover, non-convergence for fast logarithmic and non-logarithmic cooling schedules is established. The results are based on an adaptation to non-elliptic non-reversible kinetic settings of a localization/local convergence strategy developed by Fournier and Tardif in the overdamped elliptic case, and on precise quantitative high order Sobolev hypocoercive estimates.

Uniform convergence of the Fleming-Viot process in a hard killing metastable case

We study the long-time convergence of a Fleming-Viot process, in the case where the underlying process is a metastable diffusion killed when it reaches some level set. Through a coupling argument, we establish the long-time convergence of the Fleming-Viot process toward some stationary measure at an exponential rate independent of $N$, the size of the system, as well as uniform in time propagation of chaos estimates.

Convergence of a particle approximation for the quasi-stationary distribution of a diffusion process: uniform estimates in a compact soft case

We establish the convergences (with respect to the simulation time $t$; the number of particles $N$; the timestep $γ$) of a Moran/Fleming-Viot type particle scheme toward the quasi-stationary distribution of a diffusion on the $d$-dimensional torus, killed at a smooth rate. In these conditions, quantitative bounds are obtained that, for each parameter ($t\rightarrow \infty$, $N\rightarrow \infty$ or $γ\rightarrow 0$) are independent from the two others.
