Pionless Effective Field Theory Evaluation of Nuclear Polarizability in Muonic Deuterium

We calculate the longitudinal structure function of the deuteron up through next-to-next-to-leading order in the framework of pionless effective field theory. We use these results to compute the two-photon polarizability contribution to Lamb shift in muonic deuterium, which can be utilized to extract the nuclear charge radius of the deuteron. We present analytical expressions order-by-order for the relevant transition matrix elements and the longitudinal structure function, and we give numerical results for the corresponding contributions to the Lamb shift. We also discuss the impact of relativistic and other higher-order effects. We find agreement with previous calculations and explain the accuracy of our calculation.

Tritium $β$-decay in pionless effective field theory

We calculate the $β$-decay of tritium at next-to-leading order in pionless effective field theory. At this order, a low-energy parameter $L_{1, A}$ enters the calculation that is also relevant for a high-accuracy prediction of the solar proton-proton fusion rate. We use the tritium half-life to determine this parameter and provide uncertainty estimates. We show proper renormalization of our calculation analyzing the residual cutoff dependence of observables. We find that next-to-leading order corrections contribute about $4\%$ to the triton decay Gamow-Teller strength. We show that these conclusions are insensitive to different arrangements of the effective range expansion.

Three-body losses of a polarized Fermi gas near a p-wave Feshbach resonance in effective field theory

We study three-body recombination of fully spin-polarized ${}^6$Li atoms that are interacting resonantly in relative p-waves. Motivated by a recent experiment, we focus on negative scattering volumes where three atoms recombine into a deep dimer and another atom. We calculate the three-body recombination rate using a Faddeev equation derived from effective field theory. In particular, we study the magnetic field and temperature dependences of the loss rate and use the recombination data to determine the effective range of the p-wave atom-atom interaction. We also predict the existence of a shallow three-body bound state that manifests itself as a prominent feature in the energy-dependent three-body recombination rate.

Renormalization of a Finite Range Inverse Cube Potential

We study the regularization and renormalization of a finite range inverse cube potential in the two- and three-body sectors. Specifically, we compare and contrast three different regulation schemes frequently used to study few-body systems as well as the associated renormalization group flows. We also calculate bound state and scattering observables over a wide range of cutoffs, demonstrating the sufficiency of a two-body contact interaction to renormalize two- and three-body observables. We supplement these plots with quantified analyses of the observables' residual cutoff dependence.

Universal behavior of $p$-wave proton-proton fusion near threshold

We calculate the $p$-wave contribution to the proton-proton fusion $S$ factor and its energy derivative in pionless effective field theory (EFT) up to next-to-leading order. The leading contributions are given by a recoil piece from the Gamow-Teller and Fermi operators, and from relativistic $1/m$ suppressed weak interaction operators. We obtain the value of $(2.5\pm0.3 )\times 10^{-28}~\mathrm{MeV\ fm^2}$ for the $S$ factor and $(2.2\pm0.2) \times 10^{-26}~\mathrm{fm^2}$ for its energy derivative at threshold. These are smaller than the results of a prior study that employed chiral EFT by several orders of magnitude. We conclude that, contrary to what has been previously reported, the $p$-wave contribution does not need to be considered in a high-precision determination of the $S$ factor at astrophysical energies. Combined with the chiral EFT calculation of Acharya {\it et al.} [Phys. Lett. B \bf{760}, 584 (2016)] for the $s$-wave channel, this gives a total threshold $S$ factor of $S(0) = (4.047^{+0.024}_{-0.032}) \times 10^{-23}~{\rm MeV~fm}^2$.

Calculation of an $A=3$ bound-state matrix element in pionless effective field theory

In this paper, we establish a general framework for calculating pionless matrix elements between $A=3$ bound-states up to next-to-leading-order. This framework is useful for pionless calculations of electroweak observables, such as $^3$H,$^3$He magnetic moments and $^3$H $β$ decay. Starting from a Bethe-Salpeter equation, we prove that for a bound-state, the three-nucleon wave-function normalization can be expressed diagrammatically in a way that is equivalent to the unit operator between two identical three-nucleon bound-states. This diagrammatic form of the identity matrix element is the foundation for constructing an $A=3$ matrix element of a general operator. We show that this approach can be used to calculate the energy difference between $^3$H and $^3$He due to the Coulomb interaction, and to calculate the NLO corrections to the $^3$H and $^3$He scattering amplitudes due to effective range corrections.

Effective-field-theory predictions of the muon-deuteron capture rate

We quantify the theoretical uncertainties of chiral effective-field-theory predictions of the muon-deuteron capture rate. Theoretical error estimates of this low-energy process is important for a reliable interpretation of forthcoming experimental results by the MuSun collaboration. Specifically, we estimate the three dominant sources of uncertainties that impact theoretical calculations of this rate: those resulting from uncertainties in the pool of fit data used to constrain the coupling constants in the nuclear interaction, those due to the truncation of the effective field theory, and those due to uncertainties in the axial radius of the nucleon. For the capture rate into the ${}^1S_0$ channel, we find an uncertainty of approximately $4.6~s^{-1}$ due to the truncation in the effective field theory and an uncertainty of $3.9~s^{-1}$ due to the uncertainty in the axial radius of the nucleon, both of which are similar in size to the targeted experimental precision.

Halo structure of $^{17}$C

$^{17}$C has three states below the $^{16}$C + $n$ threshold with quantum numbers $J^P=3/2^+,1/2^+,5/2^+$. These states have relatively small neutron separation energies compared to the neutron separation and excitation energies of $^{16}$C. This separation of scales motivates our investigation of $^{17}$C in a Halo effective field theory (Halo EFT) with a $^{16}$C core and a valence neutron as degrees of freedom. We discuss various properties of the three states such as electric radii, magnetic moments, electromagnetic transition rates and capture cross sections. In particular, we give predictions for the charge radius and the magnetic moment of the $1/2^+$ state and for neutron capture on $^{16}$C into this state. Furthermore, we discuss the predictive power of the Halo EFT approach for the $3/2^+$ and $5/2^+$ states which are described by a neutron in a $D$-wave relative to the core.

The Efimov effect for heteronuclear three-body systems at positive scattering length and finite temperature

We study the recombination process of three atoms scattering into an atom and diatomic molecule in heteronuclear mixtures of ultracold atomic gases with large and positive interspecies scattering length at finite temperature. We calculate the temperature dependence of the three-body recombination rates by extracting universal scaling functions that parametrize the energy dependence of the scattering matrix. We compare our results to experimental data for the 40K-87Rb mixture and make a prediction for 6Li-87Rb. We find that contributions from higher partial wave channels significantly impact the total rate and, in systems with particularly large mass imbalance, can even obliterate the recombination minima associated with the Efimov effect.

Three-body halo states in effective field theory

In this paper we study the renormalization of Halo effective field theory applied to the Helium-6 halo nucleus seen as an alpha-neutron-neutron three-body state. We include the 0+ dineutron channel together with both the 3/2- and 1/2- neutron-alpha channels into the field theory and study all of the six lowest-order three-body interactions that are present. Furthermore, we discuss three different prescriptions to handle the unphysical poles in the P-wave two-body sector. In the simpler field theory without the 1/2- channel present we find that the bound-state spectrum of the field theory is renormalized by the inclusion of a single three-body interaction. However, in the field theory with both the 3/2- and 1/2- included, the system can not be renormalized by only one three-body operator.

The Operator Product Expansion Beyond Leading Order for Two-Component Fermions

We consider a homogeneous, balanced gas of strongly interacting fermions in two spin states interacting through a large scattering length. Finite range corrections are needed for a quantitative description of data which experiments and numerical simulations have provided. We use a perturbative field theoretical framework and a tool called the Operator Product Expansion (OPE), which together allow for the expression of finite range corrections to the universal relations and momentum distribution. Using the OPE, we derive the $1/k^6$ part of the momentum tail, which is related to the sum of the derivative of the energy with respect to the finite range and the averaged kinetic energy of opposite spin pairs. By comparing the $1/k^4$ term and the $1/k^6$ correction in the momentum distribution to provided Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) data, we show that including the $1/k^6$ part offers marked improvements. Our field theoretical approach allows for a clear understanding of the role of the scattering length and finite effective range in the universal relations and the momentum distribution.

An effective-field-theory analysis of Efimov physics in heteronuclear mixtures of ultracold atomic gases

We use an effective-field-theory framework to analyze the Efimov effect in heteronuclear three-body systems consisting of two species of atoms with a large interspecies scattering length. In the leading-order description of this theory, various three-body observables in heteronuclear mixtures can be universally parameterized by one three-body parameter. We present the next-to-leading corrections, which include the effects of the finite interspecies effective range and the finite intraspecies scattering length, to various three-body observables. We show that only one additional three-body parameter is required to render the theory predictive at this order. By including the effective range and intraspecies scattering length corrections, we derive a set of universal relations that connect the different Efimov features near the interspecies Feshbach resonance. Furthermore, we show that these relations can be interpreted in terms of the running of the three-body counterterms that naturally emerge from proper renormalization. Finally, we make predictions for recombination observables of a number of atomic systems that are of experimental interest.

Range corrections in Proton Halo Nuclei

We analyze the effects of finite-range corrections in halo effective field theory for S-wave proton halo nuclei. We calculate the charge radius to next-to-leading order and the astrophysical S-factor for low-energy proton capture to fifth order in the low-energy expansion. As an application, we confront our results with experimental data for the S-factor for proton capture on Oxygen-16 into the excited $1/2^+$ state of Fluorine-17. Our low-energy theory is characterized by a systematic low-energy expansion, which can be used to quantify an energy-dependent model error to be utilized in data fitting. Finally, we show that the existence of proton halos is suppressed by the need for two fine tunings in the underlying theory.

Universal Relations for Range Corrections to Efimov Features

In a three-body system of identical bosons interacting through a large S-wave scattering length $a$, there are several sets of Efimov features related by discrete scale invariance. Effective field theory was recently used to derive universal relations between these Efimov features that include the first-order correction due to a nonzero effective range $r_s$. We reveal a simple pattern in these range corrections that had not been previously identified. The pattern is explained by the renormalization group for the effective field theory, which implies that the Efimov three-body parameter runs logarithmically with the momentum scale at a rate proportional to $r_s/a$. The running Efimov parameter also explains the empirical observation that range corrections can be largely taken into account by shifting the Efimov parameter by an adjustable parameter divided by a. The accuracy of universal relations that include first-order range corrections is verified by comparing with various theoretical calculations using models with nonzero range.

Constraining Low-Energy Proton Capture on Beryllium-7 through Charge Radius Measurements

In this paper, we point out that a measurement of the charge radius of Boron-8 provides indirect access to the S-factor for radiative proton capture on Beryllium-7 at low energies. We use leading-order halo effective field theory to explore this correlation and we give a relation between the charge radius and the S-factor. Furthermore, we present important technical aspects relevant to the renormalization of pointlike P-wave interactions in the presence of a repulsive Coulomb interaction.

Two-body and Three-body Contacts for Identical Bosons near Unitarity

In a recent experiment with ultracold trapped Rb-85 atoms, Makotyn et al. have studied a quantum-degenerate Bose gas in the unitary limit where its scattering length is infinitely large. We show that the observed momentum distributions are compatible with a universal relation that expresses the high-momentum tail in terms of the 2-body and the 3-body contacts. We determine the 2- and 3-body contact densities for the unitary Bose gas with number density n to be approximately 20n^{4/3} and 2n^{5/3}, respectively. We also show that the observed atom loss rate is compatible with that from 3-atom inelastic collisions, which gives a contribution proportional to the 3-body contact, but the loss rate is not compatible with that from 2-atom inelastic collisions, which gives a contribution proportional to the 2-body contact. We point out that the contacts could be measured independently by using the virial theorem near and at unitarity.

Effective field theory for proton halo nuclei

We use halo effective field theory to analyze the universal features of proton halo nuclei bound due to a large S-wave scattering length. With a Lagrangian built from effective core and valence-proton fields, we derive a leading-order expression for the charge form factor. Within the same framework we also calculate the radiative proton capture cross section. Our general results at leading order are applied to study the excited 1/2+ state of Fluorine-17, and we give results for the charge radius and the astrophysical S-factor.

The three-boson system at next-to-leading order in an effective field theory for systems with a large scattering length

We analyze how corrections linear in the effective range, r_0, affect quantities in the three-body sector within an effective field theory for short-range interactions. We demonstrate that observables can be obtained straightforwardly using a perturbative expansion in powers of r_0. In particular, we show that two linear-in-r_0 counterterms are needed for renormalization at this order if scattering-length-dependent observables are considered. We exemplify the implications of this result using various three-body observables. Analytic results for the running of the next-to-leading-order portion of the three-body force in this effective field theory are provided. Expressions which incorporate O(r_0) corrections and relate the positions of features observed in three-atom recombination near a Feshbach resonance are presented.
