Reentrant phenomenon in the exactly solvable mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on diamond-like decorated planar lattices

Ground-state and finite-temperature behaviour of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on decorated planar lattices consisting of inter-connected diamonds is investigated by means of the generalised decoration-iteration mapping transformation. The obtained exact results clearly point out that this model has a rather complex ground state composed of two unusual quantum phases, which is valid regardless of the lattice topology as well as the spatial dimensionality of the investigated system. It is shown that the diamond-like decorated planar lattices with a sufficiently high coordination number may exhibit a striking critical behaviour including reentrant phase transitions with two or three consecutive critical points.

Exact evidence for the spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order in the two-dimensional hybrid model of localized Ising spins and itinerant electrons

The generalized decoration-iteration transformation is adopted to treat exactly a hybrid model of doubly decorated two-dimensional lattices, which have localized Ising spins at their nodal lattice sites and itinerant electrons delocalized over pairs of decorating sites. Under the assumption of a half filling of each couple of the decorating sites, the investigated model system exhibits a remarkable spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order with an obvious quantum reduction of the staggered magnetization. It is shown that the critical temperature of the spontaneously long-range ordered quantum antiferromagnet displays an outstanding non-monotonic dependence on a ratio between the kinetic term and the Ising-type exchange interaction.

Weak-universal critical behavior and quantum critical point of the exactly soluble spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the pair XYZ Heisenberg and quartic Ising interactions

Spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with XYZ Heisenberg pair interaction and two different Ising quartic interactions is exactly solved with the help of the generalized star-square transformation, which establishes a precise mapping equivalence with the corresponding eight-vertex model on a square lattice generally satisfying Baxter's zero-field (symmetric) condition. The investigated model exhibits a remarkable weak-universal critical behavior with two marked wings of critical lines along which critical exponents vary continuously with the interaction parameters. Both wings of critical lines merge together at a very special quantum critical point of the infinite order, which can be characterized through diverging critical exponents. The possibility of observing reentrant phase transitions in a close vicinity of the quantum critical point is related to a relative strength of the exchange anisotropy in the XYZ Heisenberg pair interaction.

Spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the pair XYZ Heisenberg interaction and quartic Ising interactions as the exactly soluble zero-field eight-vertex model

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the pair XYZ Heisenberg interaction and quartic Ising interactions is exactly solved by establishing a precise mapping relationship with the corresponding zero-field (symmetric) eight-vertex model. It is shown that the Ising-Heisenberg model with the ferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction exhibits a striking critical behavior, which manifests itself through re-entrant phase transitions as well as continuously varying critical exponents. The changes of critical exponents are in accordance with the weak universality hypothesis in spite of a peculiar singular behavior to emerge at a quantum critical point of the infinite order, which occurs at the isotropic limit of the Heisenberg interaction. On the other hand, the Ising-Heisenberg model with the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction surprisingly exhibits less significant changes of both critical temperatures as well as critical exponents upon varying a strength of the exchange anisotropy in the Heisenberg interaction.

Exact solution of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain

The geometric frustration in a class of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising-Heisenberg diamond chains is investigated by combining three exact analytical techniques: Kambe projection method, decoration-iteration transformation and transfer-matrix method. The ground state, the magnetization process and the specific heat as a function of the external magnetic field are particularly examined for different strengths of the geometric frustration. It is shown that the increase of the Heisenberg spin value S raises the number of intermediate magnetization plateaux, which emerge in magnetization curves provided that the ground state is highly degenerate on behalf of a sufficiently strong geometric frustration. On the other hand, all intermediate magnetization plateaux merge into a linear magnetization versus magnetic field dependence in the limit of classical Heisenberg spin S -> infinity. The enhanced magnetocaloric effect with cooling rate exceeding the one of paramagnetic salts is also detected when the disordered frustrated phase constitutes the ground state and the external magnetic field is small enough.

Phase transitions of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising model on a three-dimensional decorated lattice with a layered structure

Phase transitions of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S (S >= 1/2) Ising model on a three-dimensional (3D) decorated lattice with a layered magnetic structure are investigated within the framework of a precise mapping relationship to the simple spin-1/2 Ising model on the tetragonal lattice. This mapping correspondence yields for the layered Ising model of mixed spins plausible results either by adopting the conjectured solution for the spin-1/2 Ising model on the orthorhombic lattice [Z.-D. Zhang, Philos. Mag. 87 (2007) 5309-5419] or by performing extensive Monte Carlo simulations for the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on the tetragonal lattice. It is shown that the critical behaviour markedly depends on a relative strength of axial zero-field splitting parameter, inter- and intra-layer interactions. The striking spontaneous order captured to the 'quasi-1D' spin system is found in a restricted region of interaction parameters, where the zero-field splitting parameter forces all integer-valued decorating spins towards their 'non-magnetic' spin state.

Spontaneous order in the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagome lattice due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagome (triangles-in-triangles) lattice is exactly solved by establishing a precise mapping correspondence to the simple spin-1/2 Ising model on Kagome lattice. It is shown that the disordered spin liquid state, which otherwise occurs in the ground state of this frustrated spin system on assumption that there is a sufficiently strong antiferromagnetic intra-trimer interaction, is eliminated from the ground state by arbitrary but non-zero Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy.

Exact solution of the geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagome (triangles-in-triangles) lattice

The geometric frustration of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagome (triangles-in-triangles) lattice is investigated within the framework of an exact analytical method based on the generalized star-triangle mapping transformation. Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are obtained along with other exact results for the partition function, Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, entropy, and specific heat, by establishing a precise mapping relationship to the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on the Kagome lattice. It is shown that the residual entropy of the disordered spin liquid phase is for the quantum Ising-Heisenberg model significantly lower than for its semi-classical Ising limit (S_0/N_T k_B = 0.2806 and 0.4752, respectively), which implies that quantum fluctuations partially lift a macroscopic degeneracy of the ground-state manifold in the frustrated regime. The investigated model system has an obvious relevance to a series of polymeric coordination compounds Cu_9X_2(cpa)_6 (X=F, Cl, Br and cpa=carboxypentonic acid) for which we made a theoretical prediction about the temperature dependence of zero-field specific heat.

Phase diagram of the spin-1 XXZ Heisenberg ferromagnet with a single-ion anisotropy

Phase diagram of the spin-1 quantum Heisenberg model with both exchange as well as single-ion anisotropy is constructed within the framework of pair approximation formulated as a variational procedure based on the Gibbs-Bogoliubov inequality. In this form adapted variational approach is used to obtain the results equivalent with the Oguchi's pair approximation. It is shown that the single-ion anisotropy induces a tricritical behaviour in the considered model system and a location of tricritical points is found in dependence on the exchange anisotropy strength.

The spin-1/2 Ising model on the bow-tie lattice as an exactly soluble free-fermion model

The spin-1/2 Ising model on the bow-tie lattice is exactly solved by establishing a precise mapping relationship with its corresponding free-fermion eight-vertex model. Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are obtained for the anisotropic bow-tie lattice with three different exchange interactions along three different spatial directions.

Reentrant transitions of Ising-Heisenberg ferromagnet on a triangular lattice with diamond-like decorations

The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg ferromagnet on the decorated triangular lattice consisting of inter-connected diamonds is investigated within the framework of an exact decoration-iteration mapping transformation. It is shown that the diamond-like decoration by a couple of the Heisenberg spins gives rise to a diverse critical behaviour including reentrant phase transitions with two consecutive critical points.

Exact solution of the mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated square lattice with two different kinds of decorating spins on horizontal and vertical bonds

The mixed spin-(1/2, S_B, S_C) Ising model on a decorated square lattice with two different kinds of decorating spins S_B and S_C placed on its horizontal and vertical bonds, respectively, is exactly solved by establishing a precise mapping relationship with the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on an anisotropic square (rectangular) lattice. The effect of uniaxial single-ion anisotropy acting on both types of decorating spins S_B and S_C is examined in particular. If decorating spins S_B and S_C are integer and half-odd-integer, respectively, or if the reverse is the case, the model under investigation displays a very peculiar critical behavior beared on the spontaneously ordered 'quasi-1D' spin system, which appears as a result of the single-ion anisotropy strengthening. We have found convincing evidence that this remarkable spontaneous ordering virtually arises even though all integer-valued decorating spins tend towards their 'non-magnetic' spin state S=0 and the system becomes disordered only upon further increase of the single-ion anisotropy. The single-ion anisotropy parameter is also at an origin of various temperature dependences of the total magnetization when imposing the pure ferrimagnetic or the mixed ferro-ferrimagnetic character of the spin arrangement.

Exact results of the mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated square lattice with two different decorating spins of integer magnitudes

The mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated square lattice with two different decorating spins of the integer magnitudes S_B = 1 and S_C = 2 placed on horizontal and vertical bonds of the lattice, respectively, is examined within an exact analytical approach based on the generalized decoration-iteration mapping transformation. Besides the ground-state analysis, finite-temperature properties of the system are also investigated in detail. The most interesting numerical result to emerge from our study relates to a striking critical behaviour of the spontaneously ordered 'quasi-1D' spin system. It was found that this quite remarkable spontaneous order arises when one sub-lattice of the decorating spins (either S_B or S_C) tends towards their 'non-magnetic' spin state S = 0 and the system becomes disordered only upon further single-ion anisotropy strengthening. The effect of single-ion anisotropy upon the temperature dependence of the total and sub-lattice magnetization is also particularly investigated.

Phase diagram of the spin-1 anisotropic Heisenberg model with a single-ion anisotropy

The spin-1 anisotropic Heisenberg model with a single-ion anisotropy is studied using the Oguchi's pair approximation. Although the theory is developed for lattices with general coordination number, we treat in detail the three-dimensional lattice with the lowest coordination number, i.e. diamond lattice, where the critical and tricritical behavior of the system is analyzed as a function of both the single-ion anisotropy and exchange anisotropy.

Ternary-Spin Ising Model on an Anisotropically Decorated Square Lattice: An Exactly Solvable Case

Magnetic properties of a ternary-spin Ising model on the decorated square lattice are studied within a generalized decoration-iteration transformation. Depending on the mutual ratio between exchange interactions and the single-ion anisotropy, there appear six different phases in the ground state. The magnetic order of these phases together with the critical behaviour and corresponding magnetization curves are discussed in detail.

Investigation of phase separation within the generalized Lin-Taylor model for a binary liquid mixture of large hexagonal and small triangular particles

The generalized Lin-Taylor model defined on the hexagonal lattice is used to investigate the phase separation in an asymmetric binary liquid mixture consisting of large A (hexagons) and small B (triangles) particles. By considering interaction energies between A-A and A-B pairs of particles that occupy nearest-neighbour cells of the hexagonal lattice, we have derived an exact solution for the considered model system having established a mapping correspondence with the two-dimensional Ising model on its dual triangular lattice. Altogether, six different types of coexistence curves including those with reentrant miscibility regions (i.e. closed-loop coexistence curves) were found in dependence on the relative strength between both coupling constants.

Weak universal critical behaviour of the mixed spin-(1/2, S) Ising model on the union jack (centered square) lattice: integer versus half-odd-integer spin-S case

The mixed spin-(1/2, S) Ising model on the union jack (centered square) lattice is investigated by establishing the mapping relationship with its corresponding eight-vertex model. An interplay between the nearest-neighbour interaction, the competing next-nearest-neighbour interaction and the single-ion anisotropy gives rise to a rather complex critical behaviour displayed in the reentrant phase transitions, the weak universal critical behaviour, as well as, a presence of first- and second-order phase transitions. The most interesting finding to emerge from the present study relates to a variation of the weak-universal critical exponents along the line of bicritical points, which is being twice as large for the mixed spin-(1/2, S) systems with the integer spin-S atoms as for the ones with the half-odd-integer spin-S atoms.
