Five-dimensional Geometry from Spinning Amplitudes

Massive spinor-helicity variables in four dimensions are a useful tool for studying amplitudes between higher-spin fields and gravitons. Among them a special, simple set of amplitudes reproduces the linearized stress-energy tensor of a Kerr black hole in the classical limit. In this work we initiate the study of the classical limit of three-point spinor-helicity amplitudes in five dimensions. We introduce the map between the spinor invariants and the expectation values of spin operators and match the amplitude building blocks with those of the multipole expansion. Interestingly, in order to take the classical limit of a general amplitude, we need to augment the multipole structures with the Hodge dual of the classical spin tensor. We study the classical limit of alternative spinning states not described by fully-symmetric products of polarisations and conclude that they can describe the same spacetimes. Finally, by relaxing the orthogonality condition of the spin tensor we are able to model spacetimes with a single rotational isometry and match these to the classical limit of amplitudes allowing for an internal spin shift. Along the way we also identify the class of amplitudes describing the Myers-Perry black hole and comment on its generalization to arbitrary dimensions.

Kerr worldline-QFT action from Compton amplitude to infinite spin orders

We develop a quadratic-in-Riemann worldline action for a Kerr black hole at infinite spin orders by matching to a proposed tree-level Kerr Compton amplitude, originally obtained from higher-spin QFT considerations. A worldline action is an effective theory, and as such the tree-level matching needs to be corrected by loop effects, including UV counter terms, renormalization, and higher-order matching to general relativity. However, we anticipate that many features of the Wilson coefficients of the proposed tree-level action will remain unchanged even after a loop-level matching. While the worldline action is given in closed form, it contains an infinite number of quadratic-in-Riemann operators $R^2$, even for the same-helicity sector. We argue that in the same-helicity sector the $R^2$ operators have no intrinsic meaning, as they merely remove unwanted terms produced by the linear-in-Riemann operators, which are well-established in the literature. The opposite-helicity sector is somewhat more complicated, it contains both $R^2$ operators that removes unwanted terms, and $R^2$ operators that add new needed terms to the Compton amplitude. We discuss and classify all independent $R^2$ operators that can feature in the worldline action.

Binary Kerr black-hole scattering at 2PM from quantum higher-spin Compton

Quantum higher-spin theory applied to Compton amplitudes has proven to be surprisingly useful for elucidating Kerr black hole dynamics. Here we apply the framework to compute scattering amplitudes and observables for a binary system of two rotating black holes, at second post-Minkowskian order, and to all orders in the spin-multipole expansion for certain quantities. Starting from the established three-point and conjectured Compton quantum amplitudes, the infinite-spin limit gives classical amplitudes that serves as building block that we feed into the unitarity method to construct the 2-to-2 one-loop amplitude. We give scalar box, vector box, and scalar triangle coefficients to all orders in spin, where the latter are expressed in terms of Bessel-like functions. Using the Kosower-Maybee-O'Connell formalism, the classical 2PM impulse is computed, and in parallel we work out the scattering angle and eikonal phase. We give novel all-orders-in-spin formulae for certain contributions, and the remaining ones are given up to ${\cal O}(S^{11})$. Since Kerr 2PM dynamics beyond ${\cal O}(S^{\ge 5})$ is as of yet not completely settled, this work serves as a useful reference for future studies.

Compton Amplitude for Rotating Black Hole from QFT

We construct a candidate tree-level gravitational Compton amplitude for a rotating Kerr black hole, for any quantum spin s=0,1/2,1,...,$\infty$, from which we extract the corresponding classical amplitude to all orders in the spin vector $S^\mu$. We use multiple insights from massive higher-spin quantum field theory, such as massive gauge invariance and improved behavior in the massless limit. A chiral-field approach is particularly helpful in ensuring correct degrees of freedom, and for writing down compact off-shell interactions for general spin. The simplicity of the interactions is echoed in the structure of the spin-s Compton amplitude, for which we use homogeneous symmetric polynomials of the spin variables. Where possible, we compare to the general-relativity results in the literature, available up to eighth order in spin.

Kerr Black Holes From Massive Higher-Spin Gauge Symmetry

We propose that the dynamics of Kerr black holes is strongly constrained by the principle of gauge symmetry. We initiate the construction of EFTs for Kerr black holes of any integer quantum spin s using Stueckelberg fields, and show that the known three-point Kerr amplitudes are uniquely predicted using massive higher-spin gauge symmetry. This symmetry is argued to be connected to an enhanced range of validity for the Kerr EFTs. We consider the closely related root-Kerr electromagnetic solution in parallel, for which the dynamical interactions with photons are also constrained by massive higher-spin gauge symmetry. Finally, the spin-s Compton amplitudes are analyzed, and we discuss contact-term constraints at s=2 from Ward identities.

From higher-spin gauge interactions to Compton amplitudes for root-Kerr

We develop massive higher-spin theory as a framework for describing dynamics of rotating compact objects, such as Kerr black holes. In this paper, we explore gauge interactions up to quartic order and corresponding Compton amplitudes of higher-spin massive objects coupled to electromagnetism and Yang-Mills theory. Their classical counterparts are known as root-Kerr gauge-theory solutions, whose amplitudes are closely related to those of Kerr black holes. We use three distinct approaches: (i) massive higher-spin gauge symmetry to introduce cubic interactions for all spins and the quartic interactions up to spin 3, which is implemented both off shell and via Ward identities; (ii) a chiral higher-spin approach to construct quartic Lagrangians with correct degrees of freedom to all spins; (iii) on-shell functional patterns before and after taking the classical limit to constrain the Compton amplitudes. As final results, we arrive at simple local formulae for the candidate root-Kerr Compton amplitudes both in the quantum regime and classical limit, to all orders in spin. This is a precursor to the gravitational Kerr case, which is presented in a follow-up paper.

Classical Limit of Higher-Spin String Amplitudes

It has been shown that a special set of three-point amplitudes between two massive spinning states and a graviton reproduces the linearised stress-energy tensor for a Kerr black hole in the classical limit. In this work we revisit this result and compare it to the analysis of the amplitudes describing the interaction of leading Regge states of the open and closed superstring. We find an all-spin result for the classical limit of two massive spinning states interacting with a photon or graviton. This result differs from Kerr and instead matches the current four-vector and the stress-energy tensor generated by a classical string coupled to electromagnetism and gravity respectively. For the superstring amplitudes, contrary to the black-hole case, we find that the spin to infinity limit is necessary to reproduce the classical spin multipoles.
