Elephants explore in spirals sometimes

We consider in this article an Elephant Random Walk evolving in the plane. Specifically, this is a reinforced stochastic process in which the $n$th step is given by a random rotation of one of the previous steps chosen uniformly at random. We obtain a central limit theorem for this process, which shows that the process follows a randomly rotated logarithmic spiral at large times, with Gaussian fluctuations.

Recurrence of the plane Elephant random walk

We give a short proof of the recurrence of the two-dimensional elephant random walk in the diffusive regime. This was recently established by Shuo Qin, but our proof only uses very rough comparison with the standard plane random walk. We hope that the method can be useful for other applications.

Parking on the Random Recursive Tree

We study the parking process on the random recursive tree. We first prove that although the random recursive tree has a non-degenerate Benjamini--Schramm limit, the phase transition for the parking process appears at density $0$. We then identify the critical window for appearance of a positive flux of cars with high probability. In the case of binary car arrivals, this happens at density $ \log (n)^{-2+o(1)}$ where $n$ is the size of the tree. This is the first work that studies the parking process on trees with possibly large degree vertices.

On the limit law of the superdiffusive elephant random walk

When the memory parameter of the elephant random walk is above a critical threshold, the process becomes superdiffusive and, once suitably normalised, converges to a non-Gaussian random variable. In a recent paper by the three first authors, it was shown that this limit variable has a density and that the associated moments satisfy a nonlinear recurrence relation. In this work, we exploit this recurrence to derive an asymptotic expansion of the moments and the asymptotic behaviour of the density at infinity. In particular, we show that an asymmetry in the distribution of the first step of the random walk leads to an asymmetry of the tails of the limit variable. These results follow from a new, explicit expression of the Stieltjes transformation of the moments in terms of special functions such as hypergeometric series and incomplete beta integrals. We also obtain other results about the random variable, such as unimodality and, for certain values of the memory parameter, log-concavity.

A fixed-point equation approach for the superdiffusive elephant random walk

We study the elephant random walk in arbitrary dimension $d\geq 1$. Our main focus is the limiting random variable appearing in the superdiffusive regime. Building on a link between the elephant random walk and Pólya-type urn models, we prove a fixed-point equation (or system in dimension two and larger) for the limiting variable. Based on this, we deduce several properties of the limit distribution, such as the existence of a density with support on $\mathbb R^d$ for $d\in\{1,2,3\}$, and we bring evidence for a similar result for $d\geq 4$. We also investigate the moment-generating function of the limit and give, in dimension $1$, a non-linear recurrence relation for the moments.

A universal scaling limit for diffusive amnesic step-reinforced random walks

We introduce a variation of the step-reinforced random walk with general memory. For the diffusive regime, we establish a functional invariance principle and show that, given suitable conditions on the memory sequence, the arising limiting processes are always the sum of a noise reinforced Brownian motion and a (not independent) Brownian motion.

Elephant polynomials

In this note, we study a family of polynomials that appear naturally when analysing the characteristic functions of the one-dimensional elephant random walk. These polynomials depend on a memory parameter $p$ attached to the model. For certain values of $p$, these polynomials specialise to classical polynomials, such as the Chebychev polynomials in the simplest case, or generating polynomials of various combinatorial triangular arrays (e.g.\ Eulerian numbers). Although these polynomials are generically non-orthogonal (except for $p=\frac{1}{2}$ and $p=1$), they have interlacing roots. Finally, we relate some algebraic properties of these polynomials to the probabilistic behaviour of the elephant random walk. Our methods are reminiscent of classical orthogonal polynomial theory and are elementary.

Analysis of the smoothly amnesia-reinforced multidimensional elephant random walk

In this work, we discuss the smoothly amnesia-reinforced multidimensional elephant random walk (MARW). The scaling limit of the MARW is shown to exist in the diffusive, critical and superdiffusive regimes. We also establish the almost sure convergence in all of the three regimes. The quadratic strong law is displayed in the diffusive regime as well as in the critical regime. The mean square convergence towards a non-Gaussian random variable is established in the superdiffusive regime. Similar results for the barycenter process are also derived. Finally, the last two Sections are devoted to a discussion of the convergence velocity of the mean square displacement and the Cram{é}r moderate deviations.

Introducing smooth amnesia to the memory of the Elephant Random Walk

This paper is devoted to the asymptotic analysis of the amnesic elephant random walk (AERW) using a martingale approach. More precisely, our analysis relies on asymptotic results for multidimensional martingales with matrix normalization. In the diffusive and critical regimes, we establish the almost sure convergence and the quadratic strong law for the position of the AERW. The law of iterated logarithm is given in the critical regime. The distributional convergences of the AERW to Gaussian processes are also provided. In the superdiffusive regime, we prove the distributional convergence as well as the mean square convergence of the AERW.

How to estimate the memory of the Elephant Random Walk

We introduce an original way to estimate the memory parameter of the elephant random walk, a fascinating discrete time random walk on integers having a complete memory of its entire history. Our estimator is nothing more than a quasi-maximum likelihood estimator, based on a second order Taylor approximation of the log-likelihood function. We show the almost sure convergence of our estimate in the diffusive, critical and superdiffusive regimes. The local asymptotic normality of our statistical procedure is established in the diffusive regime, while the local asymptotic mixed normality is proven in the superdiffusive regime. Asymptotic and exact confidence intervals as well as statistical tests are also provided. All our analysis relies on asymptotic results for martingales and the quadratic variations associated.

New insights on the reinforced Elephant Random Walk using a martingale approach

This paper is devoted to the asymptotic analysis of the reinforced elephant random walk (RERW) using a martingale approach. In the diffusive and critical regimes, we establish the almost sure convergence, the law of iterated logarithm and the quadratic strong law for the RERW. The distributional convergences of the RERW to some Gaussian processes are also provided. In the superdiffusive regime, we prove the distributional convergence as well as the mean square convergence of the RERW. All our analysis relies on asymptotic results for multi-dimensional martingales with matrix normalization.

On the center of mass of the elephant random walk

Our goal is to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the center of mass of the elephant random walk, which is a discrete-time random walk on integers with a complete memory of its whole history. In the diffusive and critical regimes, we establish the almost sure convergence, the law of iterated logarithm and the quadratric strong law for the center of mass of the elephant random walk. The asymptotic normality of the center of mass, properly normalized, is also provided. Finally, we prove a strong limit theorem for the center of mass in the superdiffusive regime. All our analysis relies on asymptotic results for multi-dimensional martingales.

A martingale approach for Pólya urn processes

This paper is devoted to a direct martingale approach for P{ó}lya urn models asymptotic behaviour. A P{ó}lya process is said to be small when the ratio of its remplacement matrix eigenvalues is less than or equal to 1/2, otherwise it is called large. We find again some well-known results on the asymptotic behaviour for small and large urns processes. We also provide new almost sure properties for small urns processes.

On the multi-dimensional elephant random walk

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the multi-dimensional elephant random walk (MERW). It is a non-Markovian random walk which has a complete memory of its entire history. A wide range of literature is available on the one-dimensional ERW. Surprisingly, no references are available on the MERW. The goal of this paper is to fill the gap by extending the results on the one-dimensional ERW to the MERW. In the diffusive and critical regimes, we establish the almost sure convergence, the law of iterated logarithm and the quadratic strong law for the MERW. The asymptotic normality of the MERW, properly normalized, is also provided. In the superdiffusive regime, we prove the almost sure convergence as well as the mean square convergence of the MERW. All our analysis relies on asymptotic results for multi-dimensional martingales.
