What Price Fiber Bundle Substantivalism? On How to Avoid Holes in Fibers

On a mathematically foundational level, our most successful physical theories (gauge field theories and general-relativistic theories) are formulated in a framework based on the differential geometry of connections on principal bundles. After reviewing the essentials of this framework, we articulate the generalized hole and point-coincidence arguments, examining how they weight on a substantivalist position towards bundle spaces. This question, then, is considered in light of the Dressing Field Method, which allows a manifestly invariant reformulation of gauge field theories and general-relativistic theories, making their conceptual structure more transparent: it formally implements the point-coincidence argument and thus allows to define (dressed) fields and (dressed) bundle spaces immune to hole-type arguments.

Non-Lorentzian Supergravity and Kinematical Superalgebras

In this paper, we present and classify the supersymmetric extensions of extended kinematical algebras, at the basis of non-Lorentzian physics theories. The diverse kinematical superalgebras are here derived by applying non- and ultra-relativistic expansion procedures involving different semigroups. We then build three-dimensional Chern-Simons non-Lorentzian supergravity theories based on such (extended) kinematical superalgebras, providing the supersymmetry transformation laws of the fields and the field equations of the models, which correspond to the vanishing of the curvature two-forms. In fact, the expansion procedure adopted allows to automatically end up with a non-degenerate bilinear invariant trace for the (extended) kinematical superalgebras. The latter is a crucial ingredient of the Chern-Simons field-theoretical formulation, as it allows to include a kinetic term for each gauge field of the theory, implying the vanishing of the curvature two-forms as field equations.

The Dark Side of Double-Tensor Multiplets

We explore the properties of a set of free double-tensor multiplets in $N=2$ supersymmetry, focusing on their behavior within rigid superspace. These multiplets can be obtained from hypermultiplets by Hodge-dualizing half of their scalars, and feature an off-shell matching of bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. Despite this fact, the supersymmetry algebra results to close only on-shell. Our analysis is conducted both in superspace, using the geometric (rheonomic) approach, and in spacetime, comparing how our results are obtained in the two approaches. Notably, the cohomology of superspace requires that the scalars Hodge-dual to the antisymmetric tensors crucially contribute to the superspace description of the tensors super-field strengths. This shows an inherent non-locality of the theory, already in the free case, which however does not forbid a Lagrangian description.

Geometric relational framework for general-relativistic gauge field theories

We remind how relationality arises as the core insight of general-relativistic gauge field theories from the articulation of the generalised hole and point-coincidence arguments. Hence, a compelling case for a manifestly relational framework ensues naturally. We propose our formulation for such a framework, based on a significant development of the dressing field method of symmetry reduction. We first develop a version for the group $\text{Aut}(P)$ of automorphisms of a principal bundle $P$ over a manifold $M$, as it is the most natural and elegant, and as $P$ hosts all the mathematical structures relevant to general-relativistic gauge field theory. Yet, as the standard formulation is local, on $M$, we then develop the relational framework for local field theory. It manifestly implements the generalised point-coincidence argument, whereby the physical field-theoretical degrees of freedoms co-define each other and define, coordinatise, the physical spacetime itself. Applying the framework to General Relativity, we obtain relational Einstein equations, encompassing various notions of "scalar coordinatisation" \`a la Kretschmann-Komar and Brown-Kucha\v{r}.

On the Meaning of Local Symmetries: Epistemic-Ontological Dialectics

We propose our account of the meaning of local symmetries. We argue that the general covariance principle and gauge principle both are principles of democratic epistemic access to the law of physics, leading to ontological insights about the objective nature of spacetime. We further argue that relationality is a core notion of general-relativistic gauge field theory, tacitly encoded by its (active) local symmetries.

Extended Kinematical 3D Gravity Theories

In this work, we classify all extended and generalized kinematical Lie algebras that can be obtained by expanding the $\mathfrak{so}\left(2,2\right)$ algebra. We show that the Lie algebra expansion method based on semigroups reproduces not only the original kinematical algebras but also a family of non- and ultra-relativistic algebras. Remarkably, the extended kinematical algebras obtained as sequential expansions of the AdS algebra are characterized by a non-degenerate bilinear invariant form, ensuring the construction of a well-defined Chern-Simons gravity action in three spacetime dimensions. Contrary to the contraction process, the degeneracy of the non-Lorentzian theories is avoided without extending the relativistic algebra but considering a bigger semigroup. Using the properties of the expansion procedure, we show that our construction also applies at the level of the Chern-Simons action.

New Torsional Deformations of Locally AdS$_3$ Space

We consider general torsion components in three-dimensional Einstein-Cartan gravity, providing a geometrical interpretation for matter, and find new solutions of the corresponding equations for the Riemann curvature and torsion. These geometries involve a peculiar interplay between the vector $(\beta_i)$ and the singlet $(\tau)$ irreducible components of the torsion which, under general conditions, feature a formal analogy with the equation for a Beltrami fluid. Interestingly, we find that the local AdS$_3$ geometry is now deformed by effect of the "Beltrami-torsion" $\beta_i$. Some of these new solutions describe deformations of the BTZ black hole due to the presence of torsion. The latter acts as a geometric flux which, in some cases, removes the causal singularity.

Carrollian and Non-relativistic Jackiw-Teitelboim Supergravity

We present non- and ultra-relativistic Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) supergravity as metric BF theories based on the extended Newton-Hooke and extended AdS Carroll superalgebras in two spacetime dimensions, respectively. The extended Newton-Hooke structure, and, in particular, the invariant metric necessary for the BF construction of non-relativistic JT supergravity, is obtained by performing an expansion of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ AdS$_2$ superalgebra. Subsequently, we introduce the extended AdS$_2$ Carroll superalgebra, and the associated invariant metric, as a suitable redefinition of the extended Newton-Hooke superalgebra. The mapping involved can be seen as the supersymmetric extension of the duality existing at the purely bosonic level between the extended Newton-Hooke algebra with (positive) negative cosmological constant and the extended (A)dS Carroll algebra in two dimensions. Finally, we provide the Carrollian JT supergravity action in the BF formalism. Moreover, we show that both the non-relativistic and the ultra-relativistic theories presented can also be obtained by direct expansion of $\mathcal{N}=2$ JT supergravity.

Cosmology of Metric-Affine $R + βR^2$ Gravity with Pure Shear Hypermomentum

In this paper we study the cosmological aspects of metric-affine $f(R)$ gravity with hyperfluid. The equations of motion of the theory are obtained by varying the action with respect to the metric and the independent connection. Subsequently, considering a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background, we derive the modified Friedmann equations in the presence of a perfect cosmological hyperfluid. Especially, we focus on the particular case in which $f(R)=R+βR^2$, considering purely shear hypermomentum and finding exact solutions in the weak coupling limit.

On SIR-type epidemiological models and population heterogeneity effects

In this paper we elaborate on homogeneous and heterogeneous SIR-type epidemiological models. We find an unexpected correspondence between the epidemic trajectory of a transmissible disease in a homogeneous SIR-type model and radial null geodesics in the Schwarzschild spacetime. We also discuss modeling of population heterogeneity effects by considering both a one- and two-parameter gamma-distributed function for the initial susceptibility distribution, and deriving the associated herd immunity threshold. We furthermore describe how mitigation measures can be taken into account by model fitting.

On the role of torsion and higher forms in off-shell supergravity

We elaborate on the presence of a nonvanishing totally antisymmetric (super)torsion, equivalent to an axial vector, and higher forms in the "new minimal" and "old minimal" off-shell formulations of $\mathcal{N}=1$, $D=4$ supergravity. We adopt the geometric superspace approach and study both the geometric Lagrangian and the off-shell closure of the Bianchi identities in this framework, showing how the aforementioned axial vector torsion contributes to both the new and the old minimal set of auxiliary fields. In particular, to reproduce the old minimal set within the geometric setup, we also introduce two real auxiliary 3-form potentials.

Cosmology of Quadratic Metric-Affine Gravity

We investigate the cosmological aspects of the most general parity preserving Metric-Affine Gravity theory quadratic in torsion and non-metricity in the presence of a cosmological hyperfluid. The equations of motion are obtained by varying the action with respect to the metric and the independent affine connection. Subsequently, considering a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background, we derive the most general form of the modified Friedmann equations for the full quadratic theory. We then focus on a characteristic sub-case involving only two quadratic contributions given in terms of torsion and non-metricity vectors. In this setup, studying the modified Friedmann equations along with the conservation laws of the perfect cosmological hyperfluid, we provide exact solutions both for purely dilation and for purely spin hypermomentum sources. We then discuss the physical consequences of our model and the prominent role of torsion and non-metricity in this cosmological setup.

Three-dimensional non-relativistic supergravity and torsion

In this paper we present a torsional non-relativistic Chern-Simons teleparallel (super)gravity theory in three spacetime dimensions. We start by developing the non-relativistic limit of the purely bosonic relativistic teleparallel Chern-Simons formulation of gravity. On-shell the latter yields a non-Riemannian setup with non-vanishing torsion, which, at non-relativistic level, translates into a non-vanishing spatial torsion sourced by the cosmological constant. Then we consider the three-dimensional relativistic $\mathcal{N}=2$ Chern-Simons supergravity theory and obtain its non-relativistic counterpart by exploiting a Lie algebra expansion method. The non-relativistic supergravity theory is characterized, on-shell, by a non-vanishing spatial super-torsion, again sourced by the cosmological constant.

On the hidden symmetries of $D=11$ supergravity

We report on recent developments regarding the supersymmetric Free Differential Algebra describing the vacuum structure of $D=11$ supergravity. We focus on the emergence of a hidden superalgebra underlying the theory, explaining the group-theoretical role played by the nilpotent fermionic generator naturally appearing for consistency of the construction. We also discuss the relation between this hidden superalgebra and other superalgebras of particular relevance in the context of supergravity and superstring, involving a fermionic generator with 32 components.

Metric-Affine Vector-Tensor Correspondence and Implications in $F(R,T,Q,\mathcal{T},\mathcal{D})$ gravity

We extend the results of antecedent literature on quadratic Metric-Affine Gravity by studying a new quadratic gravity action in vacuum which, besides the usual (non-Riemannian) Einstein-Hilbert contribution, involves all the parity even quadratic terms in torsion and non-metricity plus a Lagrangian that is quadratic in the field-strengths of the torsion and non-metricity vector traces. The theory result to be equivalent, on-shell, to a Vector-Tensor theory. We also discuss the sub-cases in which the contribution to the Lagrangian quadratic in the field-strengths of the torsion and non-metricity vectors just exhibits one of the aforementioned quadratic terms. We then report on implications of our findings in the context of $F(R,T,Q,\mathcal{T},\mathcal{D})$ gravity.

On the geometric approach to the boundary problem in supergravity

We review the geometric superspace approach to the boundary problem in supergravity, retracing the geometric construction of four-dimensional supergravity Lagrangians in the presence of a non-trivial boundary of spacetime. We first focus on pure $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories with negative cosmological constant. Here, the supersymmetry invariance of the action requires the addition of topological (boundary) contributions which generalize at the supersymmetric level the Euler-Gauss-Bonnet term. Moreover, one finds that the boundary values of the super field-strengths are dynamically fixed to constant values, corresponding to the vanishing of the $\mathrm{OSp}(\mathcal{N}|4)$-covariant supercurvatures at the boundary. We then consider the case of vanishing cosmological constant where, in the presence of a non-trivial boundary, the inclusion of boundary terms involving additional fields, which behave as auxiliary fields for the bulk theory, allows to restore supersymmetry. In all the cases listed above, the full, supersymmetric Lagrangian can be recast in a MacDowell-Mansouri(-like) form. We then report on the application of the results to specific problems regarding cases where the boundary is located asymptotically, relevant for a holographic analysis.

Conformal gravity with totally antisymmetric torsion

We present a gauge theory of the conformal group in four spacetime dimensions with a non-vanishing torsion. In particular, we allow for a completely antisymmetric torsion, equivalent by Hodge duality to an axial vector whose presence does not spoil the conformal invariance of the theory, in contrast with claims of antecedent literature. The requirement of conformal invariance implies a differential condition (in particular, a Killing equation) on the aforementioned axial vector which leads to a Maxwell-like equation in a four-dimensional curved background. We also give some preliminary results in the context of $\mathcal{N}=1$ four-dimensional conformal supergravity in the geometric approach, showing that if we only allow for the constraint of vanishing supertorsion all the other constraints imposed in the spacetime approach are a consequence of the closure of the Bianchi identities in superspace. This paves the way towards a future complete investigation of the conformal supergravity using the Bianchi identities in the presence a non-vanishing (super)torsion.

Three-dimensional Maxwellian Carroll gravity theory and the cosmological constant

In this work, we present the three-dimensional Maxwell Carroll gravity by considering the ultra-relativistic limit of the Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity theory defined in three spacetime dimensions. We show that an extension of the Maxwellian Carroll symmetry is necessary in order for the invariant tensor of the ultra-relativistic Maxwellian algebra to be non-degenerate. Consequently, we discuss the origin of the aforementioned algebra and theory as a flat limit. We show that the theoretical setup with cosmological constant yielding the extended Maxwellian Carroll Chern-Simons gravity in the vanishing cosmological constant limit is based on an enlarged extended version of the Carroll symmetry. Indeed, the latter exhibits a non-degenerate invariant tensor allowing the proper construction of a Chern-Simons gravity theory which reproduces the extended Maxwellian Carroll gravity in the flat limit.
