The Initial Exploration Problem in Knowledge Graph Exploration

Knowledge Graphs (KGs) enable the integration and representation of complex information across domains, but their semantic richness and structural complexity create substantial barriers for lay users without expertise in semantic web technologies. When encountering an unfamiliar KG, such users face a distinct orientation challenge: they do not know what questions are possible, how the knowledge is structured, or how to begin exploration. This paper identifies and theorises this phenomenon as the Initial Exploration Problem (IEP). Drawing on theories from information behaviour and human-computer interaction, including ASK, exploratory search, information foraging, and cognitive load theory, we develop a conceptual framing of the IEP characterised by three interdependent barriers: scope uncertainty, ontology opacity, and query incapacity. We argue that these barriers converge at the moment of first contact, distinguishing the IEP from related concepts that presuppose an existing starting point or information goal. Analysing KG exploration interfaces at the level of interaction primitives, we suggest that many systems rely on epistemic assumptions that do not hold at first contact. This reveals a structural gap in the design space: the absence of interaction primitives for scope revelation, mechanisms that communicate what a KG contains without requiring users to formulate queries or interpret ontological structures. In articulating the IEP, this paper provides a theoretical lens for evaluating KG interfaces and for designing entry-point scaffolding that supports initial exploration.

Empirical Study on the Representation of 3D Scatterplots as 2D Figures

3D scatterplots are a well-established plotting technique that can be used to represent data with three or more dimensions. On paper and computer monitors they are essentially two-dimensional projections of the three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system. This transition from the 3D space to two dimensions is not done consistently among scientific software, as there is currently limited quantifiable evidence on the effectiveness of each approach. Notably, the frequent lack of visual cues such as with regard to depth perception is equivalent to a reduction of dimensionality by one. Hence, their use in manuscripts is less common or straightforward. In this empirical study, an online survey is conducted within an academic institution to identify and quantify the effectiveness of feature or feature combinations on 3D scatterplots in terms of reading time and accuracy.

Designing Mobile Health for User Engagement: The Importance of Socio-Technical Approach

Despite the significance of user engagement for efficacy of mobile health (mHealth) in the Global South, many such interventions do not include user-engaging attributes. This is because socio-technical aspects are frequently not considered during the design, development, and implementation, stages of such initiatives. In addition, there is little discussion in the literature about the role socio-technical factors play in user-centered design processes for mHealth. This research posits consideration of socio-technical factors is required as techno-centric approaches to mHealth design and user engagement, as well as those relying on existing universal frameworks for user-centered design, have proven to be ineffective with the result that most mHealth projects in the Global South fail to sustain. This research examines projects in Sierra Leone where semi-structured interviews were conducted with mHealth designers and developers in order to explore their attitudes towards user engagement in this case. Barriers and facilitators to user engagement were identified and classified as either technical or socio-technical. Findings from the study indicate that adoption of a techno-centric approach without consideration of socio-technical factors can negatively affect user's engagement. Based on these findings, we propose to develop a new design framework for more effective inclusion of user-engaging attributes in mHealth.
