Numerical methods for piecewise deterministic Markov processes with boundary

In this paper is described the general aspect of a numerical method for piecewise determin-istic Markov processes with boundary. Under very natural hypotheses, a crucial result about uniqueness of solution of a generalized Kolmogorov equation with respect to a test function space is proved. Next we prove the existence and uniqueness of a positive solution to the finite volume scheme without result about convergence. Finally different models of transmission control protocol window-size processes are simulated to illustrate the efficiency of the numerical method for describing the evolution of the density of a piecewise deterministic Markov process with boundary. Obviously some technical aspects have been skipped for reader convenience but the full theory will be exposed in a forthcoming paper in collaboration with C.

Statistical and probabilistic modeling of a cloud of particles coupled with a turbulent fluid

This paper exposes a novel exploratory formalism, which end goal is the numerical simulation of the dynamics of a cloud of particles weakly or strongly coupled with a turbulent fluid. Giventhe large panel of expertise of the list of authors, the content of this paper scans a wide range of connexnotions, from the physics of turbulence to the rigorous definition of stochastic processes. Our approachis to develop reduced-order models for the dynamics of both carrying and carried phases which remainconsistant within this formalism, and to set up a numerical process to validate these models. Thenovelties of this paper lie in the gathering of a large panel of mathematical and physical definitionsand results within a common framework and an agreed vocabulary (sections 1 and 2), and in somepreliminary results and achievements within this context, section 3. While the first three sections havebeen simplified to the context of a gas field providing that the disperse phase only retrieves energythrough drag, the fourth section opens this study to the more complex situation when the dispersephase interacts with the continuous phase as well, in an energy conservative manner. This will allowus to expose the perspectives of the project and to conclude.

Computing Credit Valuation Adjustment solving coupled PIDEs in the Bates model

Credit value adjustment (CVA) is the charge applied by financial institutions to the counterparty to cover the risk of losses on a counterpart default event. In this paper we estimate such a premium under the Bates stochastic model (Bates [4]), which considers an underlying affected by both stochastic volatility and random jumps. We propose an efficient method which improves the finite-difference Monte Carlo (FDMC) approach introduced by de Graaf et al. [11]. In particular, the method we propose consists in replacing the Monte Carlo step of the FDMC approach with a finite difference step and the whole method relies on the efficient solution of two coupled partial integro-differential equations (PIDE) which is done by employing the Hybrid Tree-Finite Difference method developed by Briani et al. [6, 7, 8]. Moreover, the direct application of the hybrid techniques in the original FDMC approach is also considered for comparison purposes. Several numerical tests prove the effectiveness and the reliability of the proposed approach when both European and American options are considered.

Weak convergence rates of splitting schemes for the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation

This article is devoted to the analysis of the weak rates of convergence of schemes introduced by the authors in a recent work, for the temporal discretization of the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation driven by space-time white noise. The schemes are based on splitting strategies and are explicit. We prove that they have a weak rate of convergence equal to $\frac12$, like in the more standard case of SPDEs with globally Lipschitz continuous nonlinearity. To deal with the polynomial growth of the nonlinearity, several new estimates and techniques are used. In particular, new regularity results for solutions of related infinite dimensional Kolmogorov equations are established. Our contribution is the first one in the literature concerning weak convergence rates for parabolic semilinear SPDEs with non globally Lipschitz nonlinearities.

Analysis of Some Splitting Schemes for the Stochastic Allen-Cahn Equation

We introduce and analyze an explicit time discretization scheme for the one-dimensional stochastic Allen-Cahn, driven by space-time white noise. The scheme is based on a splitting strategy, and uses the exact solution for the nonlinear term contribution. We first prove boundedness of moments of the numerical solution. We then prove strong convergence results: first, L^2 ($Ω$)-convergence of order almost 1/4, localized on an event of arbitrarily large probability, then convergence in probability of order almost 1/4. The theoretical analysis is supported by numerical experiments, concerning strong and weak orders of convergence.

Pricing and Hedging GMWB in the Heston and in the Black-Scholes with Stochastic Interest Rate Models

Valuing Guaranteed Minimum Withdrawal Benefit (GMWB) has attracted significant attention from both the academic field and real world financial markets. As remarked by Yang and Dai, the Black and Scholes framework seems to be inappropriate for such a long maturity products. Also Chen Vetzal and Forsyth in showed that the price of these products is very sensitive to interest rate and volatility parameters. We propose here to use a stochastic volatility model (Heston model) and a Black Scholes model with stochastic interest rate (Hull White model). For this purpose we present four numerical methods for pricing GMWB variables annuities: a hybrid tree-finite difference method and a Hybrid Monte Carlo method, an ADI finite difference scheme, and a Standard Monte Carlo method. These methods are used to determine the no-arbitrage fee for the most popular versions of the GMWB contract, and to calculate the Greeks used in hedging. Both constant withdrawal, optimal surrender and optimal withdrawal strategies are considered. Numerical results are presented which demonstrate the sensitivity of the no-arbitrage fee to economic, contractual and longevity assumptions.

A Wright-Fisher model with indirect selection

We study a generalization of the Wright--Fisher model in which some individuals adopt a behavior that is harmful to others without any direct advantage for themselves. This model is motivated by studies of spiteful behavior in nature, including several species of parasitoid hymenoptera in which sperm-depleted males continue to mate de- spite not being fertile. We first study a single reproductive season, then use it as a building block for a generalized Wright--Fisher model. In the large population limit, for male-skewed sex ratios, we rigorously derive the convergence of the renormalized process to a diffusion with a frequency-dependent selection and genetic drift. This allows a quantitative comparison of the indirect selective advantage with the direct one classically considered in the Wright--Fisher model. From the mathematical point of view, each season is modeled by a mix between samplings with and without replacement, and analyzed by a sort of "reverse numerical analysis", viewing a key recurrence relation as a discretization scheme for a PDE. The diffusion approximation is then obtained by classical methods.

Central Limit Theorem for Adaptative Multilevel Splitting Estimators in an Idealized Setting

The Adaptive Multilevel Splitting algorithm is a very powerful and versatile iterative method to estimate the probability of rare events, based on an interacting particle systems. In an other article, in a so-called idealized setting, the authors prove that some associated estimators are unbiased, for each value of the size n of the systems of replicas and of resampling number k. Here we go beyond and prove these estimator's asymptotic normality when h goes to infinity, for any fixed value of k. The main ingredient is the asymptotic analysis of a functional equation on an appropriate characteristic function. Some numerical simulations illustrate the convergence to rely on Gaussian confidence intervals.

Asymptotic properties of stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation with singular nonlinearity and degenerate noise

We consider a stochastic partial differential equation with a logarithmic nonlinearity with singularities at $1$ and $-1$ and a constraint of conservation of the space average. The equation, driven by a trace-class space-time noise, contains a bi-Laplacian in the drift. We obtain existence of solution for equation with polynomial approximation of the nonlinearity. Tightness of this approximated sequence of solutions is proved, leading to a limit transition semi-group. We study the asymptotic properties of this semi-group, showing the existence and uniqueness of invariant measure, asymptotic strong Feller property and topological irreducibility.

Analysis and simulation of rare events for SPDE

In this work, we consider the numerical estimation of the probability for a stochastic process to hit a set B before reaching another set A. This event is assumed to be rare. We consider reactive trajectories of the stochastic Allen-Cahn partial differential evolution equation (with double well potential) in dimension 1. Reactive trajectories are defined as the probability distribution of the trajectories of a stochastic process, conditioned by the event of hitting B before A. We investigate the use of the so-called Adaptive Multilevel Splitting algorithm in order to estimate the rare event and simulate reactive trajectories. This algorithm uses a \emph{reaction coordinate} (a real valued function of state space defining level sets), and is based on (i) the selection, among several replicas of the system having hit A before B, of those with maximal reaction coordinate; (ii) iteration of the latter step. We choose for the reaction coordinate the average magnetization, and for B the minimum of the well opposite to the initial condition. We discuss the context, prove that the algorithm has a sense in the usual functional setting, and numerically test the method (estimation of rare event, and transition state sampling).

High order finite element calculations for the deterministic Cahn-Hilliard equation

In this work, we propose a numerical method based on high degree continuous nodal elements for the Cahn-Hilliard evolution. The use of the p-version of the finite element method proves to be very efficient and favorably compares with other existing strategies (C^1 elements, adaptive mesh refinement, multigrid resolution, etc). Beyond the classical benchmarks, a numerical study has been carried out to investigate the influence of a polynomial approximation of the logarithmic free energy and the bifurcations near the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator.

Stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation with double singular nonlinearities and two reflections

We consider a stochastic partial differential equation with two logarithmic nonlinearities, with two reflections at 1 and -1 and with a constraint of conservation of the space average. The equation, driven by the derivative in space of a space-time white noise, contains a bi-Laplacian in the drift. The lack of the maximum principle for the bi-Laplacian generates difficulties for the classical penalization method, which uses a crucial monotonicity property. Being inspired by the works of Debussche, Goudenège and Zambotti, we obtain existence and uniqueness of solution for initial conditions in the interval $(-1,1)$. Finally, we prove that the unique invariant measure is ergodic, and we give a result of exponential mixing.

Stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation with singular nonlinearity and reflection

We consider a stochastic partial differential equation with logarithmic (or negative power) nonlinearity, with one reflection at 0 and with a constraint of conservation of the space average. The equation, driven by the derivative in space of a space-time white noise, contains a bi-Laplacian in the drift. The lack of the maximum principle for the bi-Laplacian generates difficulties for the classical penalization method, which uses a crucial monotonicity property. Being inspired by the works of Debussche and Zambotti, we use a method based on infinite dimensional equations, approximation by regular equations and convergence of the approximated semi-group. We obtain existence and uniqueness of solution for nonnegative intial conditions, results on the invariant measures, and on the reflection measures.
