Stability of local Riemannian Ricci curvature lower bounds

We establish the stability of local Riemannian Ricci curvature lower bounds along Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. A central part of our analysis is devoted to showing the stability of the parallelogram identity for weak gradients, obtained implementing the Lagrangian approach developed in [arXiv:2511.13320] in the local setting. As an application, we deduce the almost everywhere existence of Euclidean weak tangents. An important ingredient, of independent interest, is an effective local Evolution Variational Inequality along the heat flow on sufficiently small balls, with a remainder term depending on the rate of decay of the flow. This has applications to strong displacement convexity of the Entropy functional along local Wasserstein interpolations and to local essential nonbranching properties.

A regularity theorem for stationary measures

We investigate a variational problem for eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on smooth manifolds with respect to Radon measures belonging to a suitable class; we are motivated by conformal eigenvalues in dimension two. Our main result is a regularity result for stationary measures with respect to outer variations. More precisely, we prove that any sufficiently regular stationary measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the classical volume measure and that its density is induced by an harmonic map. Our result has some interesting applications to Steklov eigenvalues on subdomains.

On the equivalence of BV notions in metric measure spaces

The aim of the paper is to compare in detail several notions of $BV$ space of functions of bounded variation in metric measure spaces $({\rm X},\mathsf{d},\mathfrak{m})$. Informally, they can be grouped in two classes, either by a relaxation procedure starting from a class of nicer functions (and with different notions of pseudo-gradient in the relaxation procedure) or by requiring good behaviour along a rich class of absolutely continuous curves. In the second approach, richness can be understood according to the notion of approximation modulus of [O. Martio, Adv. Calc. Var., 9 (2016)] or according to the notion of test plan introduced in [L. Ambrosio, N. Gigli, and G. Savaré, Invent. Math., 195 (2014)]. Extending [L. Ambrosio and S. Di Marino, J. Funct. Anal., 266 (2014)], we prove that all these approaches are isometrically equivalent in any locally complete metric measure space.

Renormalization of contact vector fields with horizontal Sobolev regularity in Heisenberg groups

In this paper we obtain the well-posedness of the transport and continuity equations in the Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n$ for a class of contact vector fields $\mathbf b$, under natural assumptions on the regularity of $\mathbf b$ not covered by the, now classical, Euclidean theory [18]. It is the first example of well-posedness in a genuine sub-Riemannian setting, that we obtain adapting to the $\mathbb{H}^n$ geometry the mollification strategy of [18]. In the final part of the paper we illustrate why our result is not covered by the Euclidean $BV$ case solved by the first author in [1], and we compare it with the strategy of [7], based on the representation of the commutator by interpolation à la Bakry-Émery and an integral representation of the symmetrized derivative of $\mathbf b$.

Metric Sobolev spaces II: dual energies and divergence measures

This is the second of two works concerning the Sobolev calculus on metric measure spaces and its applications. In this work, we focus on several approaches to vector calculus in the non-smooth setting of complete and separable metric spaces equipped with a boundedly-finite Borel measure. More precisely, we study different notions of (co)vector fields and derivations appearing in the literature, as well as their mutual relation. We also carry forward a thorough investigation of gradients, divergence measures, and Laplacian measures, together with their applications in potential analysis (for example, regarding the condenser capacity) and in the study of duality properties of Sobolev spaces. Most of the results are obtained for the full range of exponents $p\in[1,\infty)$ and without finiteness assumption on the measure.

The superposition principle for local 1-dimensional currents

We prove that every one-dimensional locally normal metric current, intended in the sense of U. Lang and S. Wenger, admits a nice integral representation through currents associated to (possibly unbounded) curves with locally finite length, generalizing the result shown by E. Paolini and E. Stepanov in the special case of Ambrosio-Kirchheim normal currents. Our result holds in Polish spaces, or more generally in complete metric spaces for 1-currents with tight support.

Sharp PDE estimates for random two-dimensional bipartite matching with power cost function

We investigate the random bipartite optimal matching problem on a flat torus in two-dimensions, considering general strictly convex power costs of the distance. We extend the successful ansatz first introduced by Caracciolo et al. for the quadratic case, involving a linear Poisson equation, to a non-linear equation of $q$-Poisson type, allowing for a more comprehensive analysis of the optimal transport cost. Our results establish new asymptotic connections between the energy of the solution to the PDE and the optimal transport cost, providing insights on their asymptotic behavior.

Metric Sobolev spaces I: equivalence of definitions

This is the first of two works concerning the Sobolev calculus on metric measure spaces and its applications. In this work, we focus on several notions of metric Sobolev space and on their equivalence. More precisely, we give a systematic presentation of first-order $p$-Sobolev spaces, with $p\in[1,\infty)$, defined over a complete and separable metric space equipped with a boundedly-finite Borel measure. We focus on three different approaches: via approximation with Lipschitz functions; by studying the behaviour along curves, in terms either of the curve modulus or of test plans; via integration-by-parts, using Lipschitz derivations with divergence. Eventually, we show that all these approaches are fully equivalent. We emphasise that no doubling or Poincaré assumption is made, and that we allow also for the exponent $p=1$. A substantial part of this work consists of a self-contained and partially-revisited exposition of known results, which are scattered across the existing literature, but it contains also several new results, mostly concerning the equivalence of metric Sobolev spaces for $p=1$.

Weighted Sobolev Spaces on Metric Measure Spaces

We investigate weighted Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces $(X,d,m)$. Denoting by $ρ$ the weight function, we compare the space $W^{1,p}(X,d,ρm)$ (which always concides with the closure $H^{1,p}(X,d,ρm)$ of Lipschitz functions) with the weighted Sobolev spaces $W^{1,p}_ρ(X,d,m)$ and $H^{1,p}_ρ(X,d,m)$ defined as in the Euclidean theory of weighted Sobolev spaces. Under mild assumptions on the metric measure structure and on the weight we show that $W^{1,p}(X,d,ρm)=H^{1,p}_ρ(X,d, m)$. We also adapt results by Muckenhoupt and recent work by Zhikov to the metric measure setting, considering appropriate conditions on $ρ$ that ensure the equality $W^{1,p}_ρ(X,d,m)=H^{1,p}_ρ(X,d,m)$.

Classical flows of vector fields with exponential or sub-exponential summability

We show that vector fields $b$ whose spatial derivative $D_xb$ satisfies a Orlicz summability condition have a spatially continuous representative and are well-posed. For the case of sub-exponential summability, their flows satisfy a Lusin (N) condition in a quantitative form, too. Furthermore, we prove that if $D_xb$ satisfies a suitable exponential summability condition then the flow associated to $b$ has Sobolev regularity, without assuming boundedness of ${\rm div}_xb$. We then apply these results to the representation and Sobolev regularity of weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the transport and continuity equations.

Functions with bounded Hessian-Schatten variation: density, variational and extremality properties

In this paper we analyze in detail a few questions related to the theory of functions with bounded $p$-Hessian-Schatten total variation, which are relevant in connection with the theory of inverse problems and machine learning. We prove an optimal density result, relative to the $p$-Hessian-Schatten total variation, of continuous piecewise linear (CPWL) functions in any space dimension $d$, using a construction based on a mesh whose local orientation is adapted to the function to be approximated. We show that not all extremal functions with respect to the $p$-Hessian-Schatten total variation are CPWL. Finally, we prove existence of minimizers of certain relevant functionals involving the $p$-Hessian-Schatten total variation in the critical dimension $d=2$.

Linear Inverse Problems with Hessian-Schatten Total Variation

In this paper, we characterize the class of extremal points of the unit ball of the Hessian-Schatten total variation (HTV) functional. The underlying motivation for our work stems from a general representer theorem that characterizes the solution set of regularized linear inverse problems in terms of the extremal points of the regularization ball. Our analysis is mainly based on studying the class of continuous and piecewise linear (CPWL) functions. In particular, we show that in dimension $d=2$, CPWL functions are dense in the unit ball of the HTV functional. Moreover, we prove that a CPWL function is extremal if and only if its Hessian is minimally supported. For the converse, we prove that the density result (which we have only proven for dimension $d = 2$) implies that the closure of the CPWL extreme points contains all extremal points.

Optimal $C^\infty$-approximation of functions with exponentially or sub-exponentially integrable derivative

We discuss Meyers-Serrin's type results for smooth approximations of functions $b=b(t,x):\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^m$, with convergence of an energy of the form \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}}\int_{\mathbb{R}^n} w(t,x) φ\left(|Db(t,x)|\right)\mathrm{d} x \mathrm{d} t\,, \] where $w>0$ is a suitable weight function, and $φ:[0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)$ is a convex function with $φ(0)=0$ having exponential or sub-exponential growth.

On the quadratic random matching problem in two-dimensional domains

We investigate the average minimum cost of a bipartite matching, with respect to the squared Euclidean distance, between two samples of n i.i.d. random points on a bounded Lipschitz domain in the Euclidean plane, whose common law is absolutely continuous with strictly positive H{ö}lder continuous density. We confirm in particular the validity of a conjecture by D. Benedetto and E. Caglioti stating that the asymptotic cost as n grows is given by the logarithm of n multiplied by an explicit constant times the volume of the domain. Our proof relies on a reduction to the optimal transport problem between the associated empirical measures and a Whitney-type decomposition of the domain, together with suitable upper and lower bounds for local and global contributions, both ultimately based on PDE tools. We further show how to extend our results to more general settings, including Riemannian manifolds, and also give an application to the asymptotic cost of the random quadratic bipartite travelling salesperson problem.

Embedding of $RCD^*(K,N)$ spaces in $L^2$ via eigenfunctions

In this paper we study the family of embeddings $Φ_t$ of a compact $RCD^*(K,N)$ space $(X,d,m)$ into $L^2(X,m)$ via eigenmaps. Extending part of the classical results by Bérard, Bérard-Besson-Gallot, known for closed Riemannian manifolds, we prove convergence as $t\downarrow 0$ of the rescaled pull-back metrics $Φ_t^*g_{L^2}$ in $L^2(X,m)$ induced by $Φ_t$. Moreover we discuss the behavior of $Φ_t^*g_{L^2}$ with respect to measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and $t$. Applications include the quantitative $L^p$-convergence in the noncollapsed setting for all $p<\infty$, a result new even for closed Riemannian manifolds and Alexandrov spaces.

$Γ$-convergence for a class of action functionals induced by gradients of convex functions

Given a real function $f$, the rate function for the large deviations of the diffusion process of drift $\nabla f$ given by the Freidlin-Wentzell theorem coincides with the time integral of the energy dissipation for the gradient flow associated with $f$. This paper is concerned with the stability in the hilbertian framework of this common action functional when $f$ varies. More precisely, we show that if $(f_h)_h$ is uniformly $λ$-convex for some $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ and converges towards $f$ in the sense of Mosco convergence, then the related functionals $Γ$-converge in the strong topology of curves.

Monge-Ampère gravitation as a $Γ$-limit of good rate functions

Monge-Ampère gravitation is a modification of the classical Newtonian gravitation where the linear Poisson equation is replaced by the nonlinear Monge-Ampère equation. This paper is concerned with the rigorous derivation of Monge-Ampère gravitation for a finite number of particles from the stochastic model of a Brownian point cloud, in the spirit of a previous work by the third author [A double large deviation principle for Monge-Ampère gravitation, 2016]. The main step in this derivation is the $Γ-$convergence of the good rate functions corresponding to a one-parameter family of large deviation principles. Surprisingly, the derived model includes dissipative phenomena. As an illustration, we show that it leads to sticky collisions in one space dimension.
