Pulsatile Flows for Simplified Smart Fluids with Variable Power-Law: Analysis and Numerics

We study the fully-developed, time-periodic motion of a shear-dependent non-Newtonian fluid with variable exponent rheology through an infinite pipe $Ω:= \mathbb{R}\times Σ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in \{2,3\}$, of arbitrary cross-section $Σ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d-1}$. The focus is on a generalized $p(\cdot)$-fluid model, where the power-law index is position-dependent (with respect to $Σ$), $\textit{i.e.}$, a function $p\colon Σ\to (1,+\infty)$. We prove the existence of time-periodic solutions with either assigned time-periodic flow-rate or pressure-drop, generalizing known results for the Navier-Stokes and for $p$-fluid equations. In addition, we identify explicit solutions, relevant as benchmark cases, especially for electro-rheological fluids or, more generally, $\textit{`smart fluids'}$. To support practical applications, we present a fully-constructive existence proof for variational solutions by means of a fully-discrete finite-differences/-elements discretization, consistent with our numerical experiments. Our approach, which unifies the treatment of all values of $p(\overline{x})\in (1,+\infty)$, $\overline{x}\in Σ$, without requiring an auxiliary Newtonian term, provides new insights even in the constant exponent case. The theoretical findings are reviewed by means of numerical experiments.

On a 3D Stokes eigenvalue problem under Navier slip-with-friction boundary conditions and applications to Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we consider, by means of a precise spectral analysis, the 3D Navier-Stokes equations endowed with Navier slip-with-friction boundary conditions. We study the problem in a very simple geometric situation as the region between two parallel planes, with periodicity along the two planes. This setting, which is often used in the theory of boundary layers, requires some special treatment for what concerns the functional setting and allows us to characterize in a rather explicit manner eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the associated Stokes problem. These, will be then used in order to identify infinite dimensional classes of data leading to global strong solutions for the corresponding evolution Navier-Stokes equations.

Convergence of the Euler-Voigt equations to the Euler equations in two dimensions

In this paper, we consider the two-dimensional torus and we study the convergence of solutions of the Euler-Voigt equations to solutions of the Euler equations, under several regularity settings. More precisely, we first prove that for weak solutions of the Euler equations with vorticity in $C([0,T];L^2(\mathbb{T}^2))$ the approximating velocity converges strongly in $C([0,T];H^1(\mathbb{T}^2))$. Moreover, for the unique Yudovich solution of the $2D$ Euler equations we provide a rate of convergence for the velocity in $C([0,T];L^2(\mathbb{T}^2))$. Finally, for classical solutions in higher-order Sobolev spaces we prove the convergence with explicit rates of both the approximating velocity and the approximating vorticity in $C([0,T];L^2(\mathbb{T}^2))$.

Error analysis for a fully-discrete finite element approximation of the unsteady $p(\cdot,\cdot)$-Stokes equations

In this paper, we examine a fully-discrete finite element approximation of the unsteady $p(\cdot,\cdot)$-Stokes equations ($i.e.$, $p(\cdot,\cdot)$ is time- and space-dependent), employing a backward Euler step in time and conforming, discretely inf-sup stable finite elements in space. More precisely, we derive error decay rates for the vector-valued velocity field imposing fractional regularity assumptions on the velocity and the kinematic pressure. In addition, we carry out numerical experiments that confirm the optimality of the derived error decay rates in the case $p(\cdot,\cdot)\ge 2$.

Error analysis for a finite element approximation of the steady $p(\cdot)$-Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we examine a finite element approximation of the steady $p(\cdot)$-Navier-Stokes equations ($p(\cdot)$ is variable dependent) and prove orders of convergence by assuming natural fractional regularity assumptions on the velocity vector field and the kinematic pressure. Compared to previous results, we treat the convective term and employ a more practicable discretization of the power-law index $p(\cdot)$. Numerical experiments confirm the quasi-optimality of the $\textit{a priori}$ error estimates (for the velocity) with respect to fractional regularity assumptions on the velocity vector field and the kinematic pressure.

Energy conservation for weak solutions of incompressible Newtonian fluid equations in Hölder spaces with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the half-space

We investigate sufficient Hölder continuity conditions on Leray-Hopf (weak) solutions to the in unsteady Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions guaranteeing energy conservation. Our focus is on the half-space case with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. This problem is more technically challenging, if compared to the Cauchy or periodic cases, and has not been previously addressed. At present are known a few sub-optimal results obtained through Morrey embedding results based on conditions for the gradient of the velocity in Sobolev spaces. Moreover, the results in this paper are obtained without any additional assumption neither on the pressure nor the flux of the velocity, near to the boundary.

Energy conservation for 3D Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain. Applications to Beltrami flows

In this paper we consider the incompressible 3D Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in a smooth bounded domain. First, we study the 3D Euler equations endowed with slip boundary conditions and we prove the same criteria for energy conservation involving the gradient, already known for the Navier-Stokes equations. Subsequently, we utilise this finding, which is based on a proper approximation of the velocity (and doesn't require estimates or additional assumptions on the pressure), to explore energy conservation for Beltrami flows. Finally, we explore Beltrami solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations and demonstrate that conditions leading to energy conservation are significantly distinct from those implying regularity. This remains true even when making use of the bootstrap regularity improvement, stemming from the solution being a Beltrami vector field.

Velocity-vorticity geometric constraints for the energy conservation of 3D ideal incompressible fluids

In this paper we consider the 3D Euler equations and we first prove a criterion for energy conservation for weak solutions with velocity satisfying additional assumptions in fractional Sobolev spaces with respect to the space variables, balanced by proper integrability with respect to time. Next, we apply the criterion to study the energy conservation of solution of the Beltrami type, carefully applying properties of products in (fractional and possibly negative) Sobolev spaces and employing a suitable bootstrap argument.

Convergence analysis for a fully-discrete finite element approximation of the unsteady $p(\cdot,\cdot)$-Navier-Stokes equations

In the present paper, we establish the well-posedness, stability, and (weak) convergence of a fully-discrete approximation of the unsteady $p(\cdot,\cdot)$-Navier-Stokes equations employing an implicit Euler step in time and a discretely inf-sup-stable finite element approximation in space. Moreover, numerical experiments are carried out that supplement the theoretical findings.

Three results on the Energy conservation for the 3D Euler equations

We consider the 3D Euler equations for incompressible homogeneous fluids and we study the problem of energy conservation for weak solutions in the space-periodic case. First, we prove the energy conservation for a full scale of Besov spaces, by extending some classical results to a wider range of exponents. Next, we consider the energy conservation in the case of conditions on the gradient, recovering some results which were known, up to now, only for the Navier-Stokes equations and for weak solutions of the Leray-Hopf type. Finally, we make some remarks on the Onsager singularity problem, identifying conditions which allow to pass to the limit from solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations to solution of the Euler ones, producing weak solutions which are energy conserving.

Energy conservation for weak solutions of incompressible fluid equations: the Hölder case and connections with Onsager's conjecture

In this paper we give elementary proofs of energy conservation for weak solutions to the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in the class of Hölder continuous functions, relaxing some of the assumptions on the time variable (both integrability and regularity at initial time) and presenting them in a unified way. Then, in the final section we prove (for the Navier-Stokes equations) a result of energy conservation in presence of a solid boundary and with Dirichlet boundary conditions. This result seems the first one -- in the viscous case -- with Hölder type assumptions, but without additional assumptions on the pressure.

On the convergence of second-order in time numerical discretizations for the evolution Navier-Stokes equations

We prove the convergence of certain second-order numerical methods to weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations satisfying in addition the local energy inequality, and therefore suitable in the sense of Scheffer and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg. More precisely, we treat the space-periodic case in three space-dimensions and we consider a full discretization in which the the classical Crank-Nicolson method ($θ$-method with $θ=1/2$) is used to discretize the time variable, while in the space variables we consider finite elements. The convective term is discretized in several implicit, semi-implicit, and explicit ways. In particular, we focus on proving (possibly conditional) convergence of the discrete solutions towards weak solutions (satisfying a precise local energy balance), without extra regularity assumptions on the limit problem. We do not prove orders of convergence, but our analysis identifies some numerical schemes providing also alternate proofs of existence of "physically relevant" solutions in three space dimensions.

Natural second order regularity for systems in the case $1<p\leq 2$ using the $A$-approximation

In this paper we consider nonlinear problems with an operator depending only on the deformation tensor. We consider the class of operators derived from a potential and with $(p,δ)$ structure, for $1<p\leq 2$ and for all $δ\geq0$. We apply the so called $A$-approximation method to approximate the operator by another one with linear growth. This allows us to prove the "natural" second order regularity (up to the boundary) in the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We focus on the steady (elliptic) case, but results are given also in the time-dependent (parabolic) case. Results presented are not completely new, but the method we apply was not used before in this setting.

Natural second-order regularity for parabolic systems with operators having $(p,δ)$-structure and depending only on the symmetric gradient

In this paper we consider parabolic problems with stress tensor depending only on the symmetric gradient. By developing a new approximation method (which allows to use energy-type methods typical for linear problems) we provide an approach to obtain global regularity results valid for general potential operators with $(p,δ)$-structure, for all $p>1$ and for all $δ>0$. In this way we prove ``natural'' second order spatial regularity -- up to the boundary -- in the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The regularity results, are presented with full details for the parabolic setting in the case $p>2$. However, the same method also yields regularity in the elliptic case and for $1<p\leq 2$, thus proving in a different way results already known.

Analysis of fully discrete, quasi non-conforming approximations of evolution equations and applications

In this paper we consider fully discrete approximations of abstract evolution equations, by means of a quasi non-conforming spatial approximation and finite differences in time (Rothe-Galerkin method). The main result is the convergence of the discrete solutions to a weak solution of the continuous problem. Hence, the result can be interpreted either as a justification of the numerical method, or as an alternative way of constructing weak solutions. We set the problem in the very general and abstract setting of pseudo-monotone operators, which allows for a unified treatment of several evolution problems. The examples -- which fit into our setting and which motivated our research -- are problems describing the motion of incompressible fluids, since the quasi non-conforming approximation allows to handle problems with prescribed divergence. Our abstract results for pseudo-monotone operators allow to show convergence just by verifying a few natural assumptions on the operator time-by-time and on the discretization spaces. Hence, applications and extensions to several other evolution problems can be easily performed. The results of some numerical periments are reported in the final section.

On the existence of weak solutions for a family of unsteady rotational Smagorinsky models

In this paper we show that the rotational Smagorinsky model for turbulent flows, can be put, for a wide range of parameters in the setting of Bochner pseudo-monotone evolution equations. This allows to prove existence of weak solutions a) identifying a proper functional setting in weighted spaces and b) checking some easily verifiable assumptions, at fixed time. We also will discuss the critical role of the exponents present in the model (power of the distance function and power of the curl) for what concerns the application of the theory of pseudo-monotone operators.

Optimal error estimate for a space-time discretization for incompressible generalized Newtonian fluids: The Dirichlet problem

In this paper we prove optimal error estimates for {solutions with natural regularity} of the equations describing the unsteady motion of incompressible shear-thinning fluids. We consider a full space-time semi-implicit scheme for the discretization. The main novelty, with respect to previous results, is that we obtain the estimates directly without introducing intermediate semi-discrete problems, which enables the treatment of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions.
