Synchronization of two Rossler systems with switching coupling

In this paper, we study a system of two Rossler oscillators coupled through a time-varying link, periodically switching between two values. We analyze the system behavior with respect to the frequency of the switching. By applying an averaging technique under the hypothesis of a high switching frequency, we find that although each value of the coupling does not produce synchronization, switching between the two at a high frequency stabilizes the synchronization manifold. However, we also find windows of synchronization below the value predicted by this technique, and we develop a master stability function to explain the appearance of these windows. Spectral properties of the system are a useful tool for understanding the dynamical properties and the synchronization failure in some intervals of the switching frequency. Numerical and experimental results in agreement with the analysis are presented.

Analysis of Remote Synchronization in Complex Networks

A novel regime of synchronization, called remote synchronization, where the peripheral nodes form a phase synchronized cluster not including the hub, was recently observed in star motifs. We show the existence of a more general dynamical state of remote synchronization in arbitrary networks of coupled oscillators. This state is characterized by the synchronization of pairs of nodes that are not directly connected via a physical link or any sequence of synchronized nodes. This phenomenon is almost negligible in networks of phase oscillators as its underlying mechanism is the modulation of the amplitude of those intermediary nodes between the remotely synchronized units. Our findings thus show the ubiquity and robustness of these states and bridge the gap from their recent observation in simple toy graphs to complex networks.

Traffic optimization in transport networks based on local routing

Congestion in transport networks is a topic of theoretical interest and practical importance. In this paper we study the flow of vehicles in urban street networks. In particular, we use a cellular automata model to simulate the motion of vehicles along streets, coupled with a congestion-aware routing at street crossings. Such routing makes use of the knowledge of agents about traffic in nearby roads and allows the vehicles to dynamically update the routes towards their destinations. By implementing the model in real urban street patterns of various cities, we show that it is possible to achieve a global traffic optimization based on local agent decisions.

Disease spreading in populations of moving agents

We study the effect of motion on disease spreading in a system of random walkers which additionally perform long-distance jumps. A small percentage of jumps in the agent motion is sufficient to destroy the local correlations and to produce a large drop in the epidemic threshold, well explained in terms of a mean-field approximation. This effect is similar to the crossover found in static small-world networks, and can be furthermore linked to the structural properties of the dynamical network of agent interactions.

An Automatic Validation System for Interferometry Density Measurements in the ENEA-FTU Tokamak Based on Soft- Computing

In this paper, an automatic sensor validation strategy for the measurements of plasma line density in the ENEA-FTU tokamak is presented. Density measurements are performed by a 5-channel DCN interferometer. The approach proposed is based on the design of a neural model of the observed system., i.e. a model able to emulate the behavior of a fault-free sensor and of a two-stage fuzzy system able to detect the occurence of a fault by using a set of suitable indicators. The fault diagnosis and classification is also accomplished. The validation strategy has been implemented and embedded in an interactive software tool installed at FTU. Statistics concerning the rate of fault detection agree with the rate of uncertainty usually achieved in the post-pulse manual validation.
