A state space approach to dynamic modeling of mouse-tracking data

Mouse-tracking recording techniques are becoming very attractive in experimental psychology. They provide an effective means of enhancing the measurement of some real-time cognitive processes involved in categorization, decision-making, and lexical decision tasks. Mouse-tracking data are commonly analysed using a two-step procedure which first summarizes individuals' hand trajectories with independent measures, and then applies standard statistical models on them. However, this approach can be problematic in many cases. In particular, it does not provide a direct way to capitalize the richness of hand movement variability within a consistent and unified representation. In this article we present a novel, unified framework for mouse-tracking data. Unlike standard approaches to mouse-tracking, our proposal uses stochastic state-space modeling to represent the observed trajectories in terms of both individual movement dynamics and experimental variables. The model is estimated via a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm coupled with a non-linear recursive filter. The characteristics and potentials of the proposed approach are illustrated using a lexical decision case study. The results highlighted how dynamic modeling of mouse-tracking data can considerably improve the analysis of mouse-tracking tasks and the conclusions researchers can draw from them.

Derived equivalence and non-vanishing loci II

We prove a few cases of a conjecture on the invariance of cohomological support loci under derived equivalence by establishing a concrete connection with the related problem of the invariance of Hodge numbers. We use the main case in order to study the derived behavior of fibrations over curves.

Derived equivalences of canonical covers of hyperelliptic and Enriques surfaces in positive characteristic

We prove that any Fourier--Mukai partner of an abelian surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is isomorphic to a moduli space of Gieseker-stable sheaves. We apply this fact to show that the Fourier--Mukai set of canonical covers of hyperelliptic and Enriques surfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic greater than three is trivial. These results extend to positive characteristic earlier results of Bridgeland--Maciocia and Sosna.

Theta-regularity of curves and Brill-Noether loci

We provide a bound on the $Θ$-regularity of an arbitrary reduced and irreducible curve embedded in a polarized abelian variety in terms of its degree and codimension. This is an "abelian" version of Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine's bound on the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of a non-degenerate curve embedded in a projective space. As an application, we provide a Castelnuovo type bound for the genus of a curve in a (non necessarily principally) polarized abelian variety. Finally, we bound the $Θ$-regularity of a class of higher dimensional subvarieties in Jacobian varieties, i.e. the Brill-Noether loci associated to a Petri general curve, extending earlier work of Pareschi-Popa.

Deformations of minimal cohomology classes on abelian varieties

We show that the infinitesimal deformations of the Brill--Noether locus $W_d$ attached to a smooth non-hyperelliptic curve $C$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the deformations of $C$. As an application, we prove that if a Jacobian $J$ deforms together with a minimal cohomology class out the Jacobian locus, then $J$ is hyperelliptic. In particular, this provides an evidence to a conjecture of Debarre on the classification of ppavs carrying a minimal cohomology class. Finally, we also study simultaneous deformations of Fano surfaces of lines and intermediate Jacobians.

GV-subschemes and their embeddings in principally polarized abelian varieties

We prove that the embedding of a $GV$-subscheme in a principally polarized abelian variety does not factor through any nontrivial isogeny. As an application, we present a new proof of a theorem of Clemens--Griffiths identifying the intermediate Jacobian of a smooth cubic threefold in $\mathbf{P}^4$ to the Albanese variety of its Fano surface of lines.

Regularity of curves in abelian varieties

Inspired by a theorem of Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of curves in projective spaces, we bound the Theta-regularity of curves in polarized abelian varieties.

Derived invariants of irregular varieties and Hochschild homology

We study the behavior of cohomological support loci of the canonical bundle under derived equivalence of smooth projective varieties. This is achieved by investigating the derived invariance of a generalized version of Hochschild homology. Furthermore, using techniques coming from birational geometry, we establish the derived invariance of the Albanese dimension for varieties having non-negative Kodaira dimension. We apply our machinery to study the derived invariance of the holomorphic Euler characteristic and of certain Hodge numbers for special classes of varieties. Further applications concern the behavior of particular types of fibrations under derived equivalence.

Inequalities for the Hodge numbers of irregular compact Kaehler manifolds

Based on work of R. Lazarsfeld and M. Popa, we use the derivative complex associated to the bundle of the holomorphic p-forms to provide inequalities for all the Hodge numbers of a special class of irregular compact Kaehler manifolds. For 3-folds and 4-folds we give an asymptotic bound for all the Hodge numbers in terms of the irregularity. As a byproduct, via the BGG correspondence, we also bound the regularity of the exterior cohomology modules of bundles of holomorphic p-forms.

The Equations of Singular Loci of Ample Divisors on (Subvarieties of) Abelian Varieties

In this paper we consider ideal sheaves associated to the singular loci of a divisor in a linear system $|L|$ of an ample line bundle on a complex abelian variety. We prove an effective result on their (continuous) global generation, after suitable twists by powers of $L$. Moreover we show that similar results hold for subvarieties of a complex abelian variety.
