Power-Law Time Distribution of Large Earthquakes

We study the statistical properties of time distribution of seimicity in California by means of a new method of analysis, the Diffusion Entropy. We find that the distribution of time intervals between a large earthquake (the main shock of a given seismic sequence) and the next one does not obey Poisson statistics, as assumed by the current models. We prove that this distribution is an inverse power law with an exponent $μ=2.06 \pm 0.01$. We propose the Long-Range model, reproducing the main properties of the diffusion entropy and describing the seismic triggering mechanisms induced by large earthquakes.

Conflict between trajectories and density description: the statistical source of disagreement

We study an idealized version of intermittent process leading the fluctuations of a stochastic dichotomous variable $ξ$. It consists of an overdamped and symmetric potential well with a cusp-like minimum. The right-hand and left-hand portions of the potential corresponds to $ξ= W$ and $ξ= -W$, respectively. When the particle reaches this minimum is injected back to a different and randomly chosen position, still within the potential well. We build up the corresponding Frobenius-Perron equation and we evaluate the correlation function of the stochastic variable $ξ$, called $Φ_ξ(t)$. We assign to the potential well a form yielding $Φ_ξ(t) = (T/(t + T))^β$, with $β> 0$. We limit ourselves to considering correlation functions with an even number of times, indicated for concision, by $<12>$, $<1234>$ and, more, in general, by $<1 ... 2n>$. The adoption of a treatment based on density yields $<1 ... 2n > = < 1 2 > ... < (2n-1) 2n>$. We study the same dynamic problem using trajectories, and we establish that the resulting two-time correlation function coincides with that afforded by the density picture, as it should. We then study the four-times correlation function and we prove that in the non-Poisson case it departs from the density prescription, namely, from $<1234 > = < 12 > < 34>$. We conclude that this is the main reason why the two pictures yield two different diffusion processes, as noticed in an earlier work [M. Bologna, P. Grigolini, B.J. West, Chem. Phys. {\bf 284}, (1-2) 115-128 (2002)].

Short- and Long-Term Statistical Properties of Heartbeat Time-Series in Healthy and Pathological Subjects

We analize heartbeat time-series corresponding to several groups of individuals (healthy, heart transplanted, with congestive heart failure (CHF), after myocardial infarction (MI), hypertensive), looking for short- and long-time statistical behaviors. In particular we study the persistency patterns of interbeat times and interbeat-time variations. Long-range correlations are revealed using an information-based technique which makes a wise use of the available statistics. The presence of strong long-range time correlations seems to be a general feature for all subjects, with the exception of some CHF individuals. We also show that short time-properties detected in healthy subjects, and seen also in hypertensive and MI patients, and completely absent in the trasplanted, are characterized by a general behavior when we apply a proper coarse-graining procedure for time series analysis.

Decoherence, wave function collapses and non-ordinary statistical mechanics

We consider a toy model of pointer interacting with a 1/2-spin system, whose $σ_{x}$ variable is \emph{measured} by the environment, according to the prescription of decoherence theory. If the environment measuring the variable $σ_{x}$ yields ordinary statistical mechanics, the pointer sensitive to the 1/2-spin system undergoes the same, exponential, relaxation regardless of whether real collapses or an entanglement with the environment, mimicking the effect of real collapses, occur. In the case of non-ordinary statistical mechanics the occurrence of real collapses make the pointer still relax exponentially in time, while the equivalent picture in terms of reduced density matrix generates an inverse power law relaxation.

Asymmetric Anomalous Diffusion: an Efficient Way to Detect Memory in Time Series

We study time series concerning rare events. The occurrence of a rare event is depicted as a jump of constant intensity always occurring in the same direction, thereby generating an asymmetric diffusion process. We consider the case where the waiting time distribution is an inverse power law with index $μ$. We focus our attention on $μ<3$, and we evaluate the scaling $δ$ of the resulting diffusion process. We prove that $δ$ gets its maximum value, $δ=1$, corresponding to the ballistic motion, at $μ=2$. We study the resulting diffusion process by means of joint use of the continuous time random walk and of the generalized central limit theorem, as well as adopting numerical treatment. We show that rendering asymmetric the diffusion process yelds the significant benefit of enhancing the value of the scaling parameter $δ$. Furthermore, this scaling parameter becomes sensitive to the power index $μ$ in the whole region $1<μ<3$. Finally, we show our method in action on real data concerning human heartbeat sequences.

Macroscopic Manifestation of Microscopic Entropy Production: Space-Dependent Intermittence

We study a spatial diffusion process generated by velocity fluctuations of intermittent nature. We note that intermittence reduces the entropy production rate while enhancing the diffusion strength. We study a case of space-dependent intermittence and prove it to result in a deviation from uniform distribution. This macroscopic effect can be used to measure the relative value of the trajectory entropy.

Quantum Measurement and Entropy Production

We study the time evolution of a quantum system without classical counterpart, undergoing a process of entropy increase due to the environment influence. We show that if the environment-induced decoherence is interpreted in terms of wave-function collapses, a symbolic sequence can be generated. We prove that the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of this sequence coincides with rate of von Neumann entropy increase.

Towards the Thermodynamics of Localization Processes

We study the entropy time evolution of a quantum mechanical model, which is frequently used as a prototype for Anderson's localization. Recently Latora and Baranger [V. Latora, M. Baranger, Phys. Rev.Lett. 82, 520(1999)] found that there exist three entropy regimes, a transient regime of passage from dynamics to thermodynamics, a linear in time regime of entropy increase, namely a thermodynamic regime of Kolmogorov kind, and a saturation regime. We use the non-extensive entropic indicator recently advocated by Tsallis [ C. Tsallis, J. Stat. Phys. 52, 479 (1988)] with a mobile entropic index q, and we find that with the adoption of the ``magic'' value q = Q = 1/2 the Kolmogorov regime becomes more extended and more distinct than with the traditional entropic index q = 1. We adopt a two-site model to explain these properties by means of an analytical treatment and we argue that Q =1/2 might be a typical signature of the occurrence of Anderson's localization.

A non extensive approach to the entropy of symbolic sequences

Symbolic sequences with long-range correlations are expected to result in a slow regression to a steady state of entropy increase. However, we prove that also in this case a fast transition to a constant rate of entropy increase can be obtained, provided that the extensive entropy of Tsallis with entropic index q is adopted, thereby resulting in a new form of entropy that we shall refer to as Kolmogorov-Sinai-Tsallis (KST) entropy. We assume that the same symbols, either 1 or -1, are repeated in strings of length l, with the probability distribution p(l) proportional to 1/(l^mu). The numerical evaluation of the KST entropy suggests that at the value mu = 2 a sort of abrupt transition might occur. For the values of mu in the range 1 diverges, thereby breaking the balance between determinism and randomness in favor of determinism. In the region mu > 2 the entropic index q seems to depend on mu through the power law expression q = (mu-2)^(alpha) with alpha approximately 0.13 (q = 1 with mu > 3). It is argued that this phase-transition like property signals the onset of the thermodynamical regime at mu = 2.

The transition from a classical to a quantum world as a passage from extensive to non-extensive thermodynamics

We study the thermodynamical properties of the quantum kicked rotator, coarsened by an external fluctuation with a weak intensity D, by means of the Tsallis entropy with a changing entropic index q. The genuine entropic index, corresponding to given values of D and $\hbar$ is that making the Tsallis entropy increase linearly in time, and it is proved to become q <1 for suitably large values of $\hbar $: This indicates a subdiffusional regime which, in turn, signals the occurrence of quantum localization. Thus the process of Anderson localization is shown to be compatible with a thermodynamical representation provided that a non-extensive form of entropy is used.
