Impurities Near the Light Cone

The lightlike Wilson line cusp underlies the Sudakov double logarithm and is a central ingredient in gauge-theory factorization. We ask what replaces this behavior for general conformal line defects in Lorentzian signature. We argue that, when the defects admit local endpoint operators, the cusp anomalous dimension has a finite large-boost limit fixed by the scaling dimensions of the corresponding defect-creation operators. We further analyze the distinct analytic continuations of the cusp, elucidate their physical interpretations, and derive a positivity condition on the Lorentzian cusp anomalous dimension. We test these predictions in several perturbative examples, including pinning-field defects and spin impurities, and discuss their possible implications for gauge theories.

Comments on Symmetry Operators, Asymptotic Charges and Soft Theorems

We study the relation between emergent 1-form symmetries and soft photon theorems in QED. We show that in the relevant massive and massless kinematic regimes, described respectively by HQET and SCET, the soft sector admits electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries. We then show that these symmetries give rise to an infinite-dimensional Abelian algebra of ordinary conserved charges, with a central extension. In Minkowski spacetime, suitable choices of hypersurfaces reduce these charges to the familiar asymptotic symmetry charges and imply the leading electric and magnetic soft photon theorems. We further show that the central term in this algebra fixes a contact term appearing in scattering amplitudes involving two soft photons with mixed electric-magnetic polarizations. Finally, we extend the same construction to inclusive observables and apply it to QED photon detectors.

U(1) Gauging, Continuous TQFTs, and Higher Symmetry Structures

Quantum field theories can exhibit various generalized symmetry structures, among which higher-group symmetries and non-invertible symmetry defects are particularly prominent. In this work, we explore a new general scenario in which these two structures are intertwined. This phenomenon arises in four dimensions when gauging one of multiple $U(1)$ 0-form symmetries in the presence of mixed 't Hooft anomalies. We illustrate this with two distinct models that flow to an IR gapless phase and a gapped phase, respectively, and examine how this symmetry structure manifests in each case. Additionally, we investigate a five-dimensional model where a similar structure exists intrinsically. Our main tool is a symmetry TQFT in one higher dimension, formulated using non-compact gauge fields and having infinitely many topological operators. We carefully determine its boundary conditions and provide a detailed discussion on various dressing choices for its bulk topological operators.

Symmetries, Universes and Phases of QCD$_2$ with an Adjoint Dirac Fermion

We study 2d $SU(N)$ QCD with an adjoint Dirac fermion. Assuming that the IR limit of the massless theory is captured by a WZW coset CFT, we show that this CFT can be decomposed into a sum of distinct CFTs, each representing a superselection sector (universe) of the gauge theory corresponding to different flux tube sectors. The CFTs describing each universe are related by non-invertible topological lines that exhibit a mixed anomaly with the $\mathbb{Z}^{(1)}_N$ 1-form symmetry. These symmetries exist along the entire RG flow thereby implying deconfinement of the massless theory. We begin by outlining the general features of the model for arbitrary $N$ and then provide a detailed analysis for $N=2$ and $N=3$. In these specific cases, we explicitly determine the IR partition function, identify the symmetries, and explore relevant deformations. Based on these findings and in alignment with various previous studies, we propose a phase diagram for the massive $SU(2)$ gauge theory and calculate its confining string tension.

Comments on Global Symmetries and Anomalies of $5d$ SCFTs

We study various aspects of global symmetries in five-dimensional superconformal field theories. Whenever a supersymmetry-preserving relevant deformation is available, the infrared gauge theory description might exhibit a finite order mixed 't Hooft anomaly between a $1$-form symmetry and the instantonic symmetry. This anomaly constrains the flavor symmetry group acting faithfully on the SCFT and the consistency of certain RG flows. As an additional example, we consider the instructive case of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ SQED. Finally, we discuss the compatibility between conformal invariance and the presence of $1$-form and $2$-group global symmetries.

The Non-Invertible Axial Symmetry in QED Comes Full Circle

We revisit the possibility of constructing non-invertible topological defects for the axial symmetry of massless QED, despite its ABJ anomaly. Dressing the defects with a topological quantum field theory with mixed $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{R}$-valued gauge fields, we are able to describe axial rotations of any rational or irrational angle. We confront our results with the existing proposals, in particular those that concern rational angles. We also provide the Symmetry TFT that reproduces the action of all such symmetry defects of QED. Finally, we discuss how similar techniques allow the study of condensation defects for a $\mathbb{R}$ global symmetry.

Non-invertible symmetries along 4d RG flows

We explore novel examples of RG flows preserving a non-invertible self-duality symmetry. Our main focus is on $\mathcal{N}=1$ quadratic superpotential deformations of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{su}(N)$. A theory that can be obtained in this way is the so-called $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ SYM where all adjoint chiral multiplets have a mass. Such IR theory exhibits a rich structure of vacua which we thoroughly examine. Our analysis elucidates the physics of spontaneous breaking of self-duality symmetry occurring in the degenerate gapped vacua. The construction can be generalized, taking as UV starting point a theory of class $\mathcal{S}$, to demonstrate how non-invertible self-duality symmetries exist in a variety of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs. We finally apply this understanding to prove that the conifold theory has a non-invertible self-duality symmetry.

Continuous Generalized Symmetries in Three Dimensions

We present a class of three-dimensional quantum field theories whose ordinary global symmetries mix with higher-form symmetries to form a continuous 2-group. All these models can be obtained by performing a gauging procedure in a parent theory revealing a 't Hooft anomaly in the space of coupling constants when suitable compact scalar background fields are activated. Furthermore, the gauging procedure also implies that our main example has infinitely many non-invertible global symmetries. These can be obtained by dressing the continuous symmetry operators with topological quantum field theories. Finally, we comment on the holographic realization of both 2-group global symmetries and non-invertible symmetries discussed here by introducing a corresponding four-dimensional bulk description in terms of dynamical gauge fields.

Anomaly Matching Across Dimensions and Supersymmetric Cardy Formulae

't Hooft anomalies are known to induce specific contributions to the effective action at finite temperature. We present a general method to directly calculate such contributions from the anomaly polynomial of a given theory, including a term which involves a $U(1)$ connection for the thermal circle isometry. Based on this observation, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the superconformal index of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories on the "second sheet" can be calculated by integrating the anomaly polynomial on a particular background. The integration is then performed by an equivariant method to reproduce known results. Our method only depends on the anomaly polynomial and therefore the result is applicable to theories without known Lagrangian formulation. We also present a new formula that relates the behavior of $6d$ $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs on the second sheet to the anomaly polynomial.

Delayed Deconfinement and the Hawking-Page Transition

We revisit the confinement/deconfinement transition in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and its relation to the Hawking-Page transition in gravity. Recently there has been substantial progress on counting the microstates of 1/16-BPS extremal black holes. However, there is presently a mismatch between the Hawking-Page transition and its avatar in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. This led to speculations about the existence of new gravitational saddles that would resolve the mismatch. Here we exhibit a phenomenon in complex matrix models which we call "delayed deconfinement". It turns out that when the action is complex, due to destructive interference, tachyonic modes do not necessarily condense. We demonstrate this phenomenon in ordinary integrals, a simple unitary matrix model, and finally in the context of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. Delayed deconfinement implies a first-order transition, in contrast to the more familiar cases of higher-order transitions in unitary matrix models. We determine the deconfinement line and find remarkable agreement with the prediction of gravity. On the way, we derive some results about the Gross-Witten-Wadia model with complex couplings. Our techniques apply to a wide variety of (SUSY and non-SUSY) gauge theories though in this paper we only discuss the case of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM.

Extremal Correlators and Random Matrix Theory

We study the correlation functions of Coulomb branch operators of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ Superconformal Field Theories (SCFTs). We focus on rank-one theories, such as the SU(2) gauge theory with four fundamental hypermultiplets. "Extremal" correlation functions, involving exactly one anti-chiral operator, are perhaps the simplest nontrivial correlation functions in four-dimensional Quantum Field Theory. We show that the large charge limit of extremal correlators is captured by a "dual" description which is a chiral random matrix model of the Wishart-Laguerre type. This gives an analytic handle on the physics in some particular excited states. In the limit of large random matrices we find the physics of a non-relativistic axion-dilaton effective theory. The random matrix model also admits a 't Hooft expansion in which the matrix is taken to be large and simultaneously the coupling is taken to zero. This explains why the extremal correlators of SU(2) gauge theory obey a nontrivial double scaling limit in states of large charge. We give an exact solution for the first two orders in the 't Hooft expansion of the random matrix model and compare with expectations from effective field theory, previous weak coupling results, and we analyze the non-perturbative terms in the strong 't Hooft coupling limit. Finally, we apply the random matrix theory techniques to study extremal correlators in rank-1 Argyres-Douglas theories. We compare our results with effective field theory and with some available numerical bootstrap bounds.

Instantons, Symmetries and Anomalies in Five Dimensions

All five-dimensional non-abelian gauge theories have a $U(1)_I$ global symmetry associated with instantonic particles. We describe an obstruction to coupling $U(1)_I$ to a classical background gauge field that occurs whenever the theory has a one-form center symmetry. This is a finite-order mixed 't Hooft anomaly between the two symmetries. We also show that a similar obstruction takes place in gauge theories with fundamental matter by studying twisted bundles for the ordinary flavor symmetry. We explore some general dynamical properties of the candidate phases implied by the anomaly. Finally, we apply our results to supersymmetric gauge theories in five dimensions and analyze the symmetry enhancement patterns occurring at their conjectured RG fixed points.

4D Gauge Theories with Conformal Matter

One of the hallmarks of 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs) is that on a partial tensor branch, all known theories resemble quiver gauge theories with links comprised of 6D conformal matter, a generalization of weakly coupled hypermultiplets. In this paper we construct 4D quiverlike gauge theories in which the links are obtained from compactifications of 6D conformal matter on Riemann surfaces with flavor symmetry fluxes. This includes generalizations of super QCD with exceptional gauge groups and quarks replaced by 4D conformal matter. Just as in super QCD, we find evidence for a conformal window as well as confining gauge group factors depending on the total amount of matter. We also present F-theory realizations of these field theories via elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds. Gauge groups (and flavor symmetries) come from 7-branes wrapped on surfaces, conformal matter localizes at the intersection of pairs of 7-branes, and Yukawas between 4D conformal matter localize at points coming from triple intersections of 7-branes. Quantum corrections can also modify the classical moduli space of the F-theory model, matching expectations from effective field theory.

6D Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We present a 6D generalization of the fractional quantum Hall effect involving membranes coupled to a three-form potential in the presence of a large background four-form flux. The low energy physics is governed by a bulk 7D topological field theory of abelian three-form potentials with a single derivative Chern-Simons-like action coupled to a 6D anti-chiral theory of Euclidean effective strings. We derive the fractional conductivity, and explain how continued fractions which figure prominently in the classification of 6D superconformal field theories correspond to a hierarchy of excited states. Using methods from conformal field theory we also compute the analog of the Laughlin wavefunction. Compactification of the 7D theory provides a uniform perspective on various lower-dimensional gapped systems coupled to boundary degrees of freedom. We also show that a supersymmetric version of the 7D theory embeds in M-theory, and can be decoupled from gravity. Encouraged by this, we present a conjecture in which IIB string theory is an edge mode of a 10+2-dimensional bulk topological theory, thus placing all twelve dimensions of F-theory on a physical footing.

A new 6d fixed point from holography

We propose a stringy construction giving rise to a class of interacting and non-supersymmetric CFT's in six dimensions. Such theories may be obtained as an IR conformal fixed point of an RG flow ending up in a $(1, 0)$ theory in the UV. We provide the due holographic evidence in the context of massive type IIA on $\textrm {AdS}_{7}\times M_3$, where $M_3$ is topologically an $S^3$. In particular, in this paper we present a 10d flow solution which may be interpreted as a non-BPS bound state of NS5, D6 and $\overline{\textrm{D6}}$ branes. Moreover, by adopting its 7d effective description, we are able to holographically compute the free energy and the operator spectrum in the novel IR conformal fixed point.

Modular properties of full 5D SYM partition function

We study properties of the full partition function for the $U(1)$ 5D $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ gauge theory with adjoint hypermultiplet of mass $M$. This theory is ultimately related to abelian 6D (2,0) theory. We construct the full non-perturbative partition function on toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds by gluing flat copies of the Nekrasov partition function and we express the full partition function in terms of the generalized double elliptic gamma function $G_2^C$ associated with a certain moment map cone $C$. The answer exhibits a curious $SL(4,\mathbb{Z})$ modular property. Finally, we propose a set of rules to construct the partition function that resembles the calculation of 5D supersymmetric partition function with the insertion of defects of various co-dimensions.

Multiple sine, multiple elliptic gamma functions and rational cones

We define generalizations of the multiple elliptic gamma functions and the multiple sine functions, labelled by rational cones in $\mathbb{R}^r$. For $r=2,3$ we prove that the generalized multiple elliptic gamma functions enjoy a modular property determined by the cone. This generalizes the modular properties of the elliptic gamma function studied by Felder and Varchenko. The generalized multiple sine enjoy a related infinite product representation, generalizing the results of Narukawa for the ordinary multiple sine functions.

Gluing Nekrasov partition functions

In this paper we summarise the localisation calculation of 5D super Yang-Mills on simply connected toric Sasaki-Einstein (SE) manifolds. We show how various aspects of the computation, including the equivariant index, the asymptotic behaviour and the factorisation property are governed by the combinatorial data of the toric geometry. We prove that the full perturbative partition function on a simply connected SE manifold corresponding to an n-gon toric diagram factorises to n copies of perturbative Nekrasov partition function. This leads us to conjecture the full partition function as gluing n copies of full Nekrasov partition function. This work is a generalisation of some earlier computation carried out on $Y^{p,q}$ manifolds, whose moment map cone has a quadrangle and our result is valid for manifolds whose moment map cones have pentagon base, hexagon base, etc. The algorithm we used for dealing with general cones may also be of independent interest.
