The Mysterious Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Ray Clustering

We examine the correlation between compact radio quasars (redshifts in the range $z = 0.3 - 2.2$) and the arrival direction of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays forming clusters. Our Monte Carlo simulation reveals a statistically significant correlation on the AGASA sample: the chance probability of this effect being less than 1%. The implications of this result on the origin of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays are discussed.

An Auger test of the Cen A model of highest energy cosmic rays

If, as recently proposed by Farrar and Piran, Cen A is the source of cosmic rays detected above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min cutoff, neutrons are $\approx 140$ more probable than protons to be observed along its line of sight. This is because the proton flux is rendered nearly isotropic by ${\cal O}(μ$G) intergalactic magnetic fields. With the anticipated aperture of the Southern Auger Observatory, one may expect on the order of 2 neutron events/year above $10^{20}$ eV in the line of sight of Cen A.

Non-extensivity Effects and the Highest Energy Cosmic Ray Affair

Recent measurements of the cosmic microwave background confirm that it is described by a Planckian distribution with high precision. It is non-extensivity bounded to be less than some parts in $10^5$, or to some parts in $10^4$ at most. This deviation may appear minuscule, but may have a non-negligible effect on a particle propagating through this background over the course of millions of years. In this paper we analyze the possible influence of such a slight deviation upon the propagation of nuclei and protons of ultra-high energy. These particles interact via photopion and photodisintegration processes which we examine taking into account a slight non-extensive background. We show that such a deviation does not exhibit a significant difference in the energy attenuation length of extremely high energy cosmic rays.

Radiation from a uniformly accelerated charge in the outskirts of a wormhole throat

Using traversable wormholes as theoretical background, we revisit a deep question of general relativity: Does a uniformly accelerated charged particle radiate? We particularize to the recently proposed gravitational Čerenkov radiation, that happens when the spatial part of the Ricci tensor is negative. If $^{^{(3+1)}}R^i_{\phantom{i}i}< 0$, the matter threading the gravitational field violates the weak energy condition. In this case, the effective refractive index for light is bigger than 1, i.e. particles propagates, in that medium, faster than photons. This leads to a violation of the equivalence principle.

Echoes of the fifth dimension?

In this article we examine the question of whether the highest energy cosmic ray primaries could be ultra relativistic magnetic monopoles. The analysis is performed within the framework of large compact dimensions and TeV scale quantum gravity. Our study indicates that while this hypothesis must be regarded as highly speculative it cannot be ruled out with present data.

The world is not enough

We show that the 5-dimensional model introduced by Randall and Sundrum is (half of) a wormhole, and that this is a general result in models of the RS type. We also discuss the gravitational trapping of a scalar particle in 5-d spacetimes. Finally, we present a simple model of brane-world cosmology in which the background is a static anti-de Sitter manifold, and the location of the two 3-branes is determined by the technique of ``surgical grafting''.

Cosmic dust grains strike again

A detailed simulation of air showers produced by dust grains has been performed by means of the {\sc aires} Monte Carlo code with the aim of comparing with experimental data. Our analysis indicates that extensive dust grain air showers must yet be regarded as highly speculative but they cannot be completely ruled out.

In search for natural wormholes

We have investigated 631 time profiles of gamma ray bursts from the BATSE database searching for observable signatures produced by microlensing events related to natural wormholes. The results of this first search of topologically nontrivial objects in the Universe can be used to constrain their number and mass.

Gamma Ray Bursts with peculiar temporal asymmetry

Based on the study of temporal asymmetry of 631 gamma ray bursts from the BATSE 3B catalog by Link and Epstein [Ap J 466, 764 (1996)], we identify the population of bursts whose rising times are longer than their decays, thus showing atypical profiles. We analyse their sky distribution, morphology, time-space clustering and other average properties and compare them with those associated with the bulk of the bursts. We show how most of the peculiar bursts analysed are consistent with recent fireball models, but a fraction of bursts ($\sim 4$% of the total sample) appear to be inconsistent.

From 3K to $10^{20}$eV

The problem of predicting the upper cut-off of the cosmic ray spectrum is re-examined. Some aspects of extremely high energy interactions and their implications for the interpretation of giant air showers are also discussed.

Might some gamma ray bursts be an observable signature of natural wormholes?

The extragalactic microlensing scenario for natural wormholes is examined. It is shown that the main features of wormhole lensing events upon the light of distant Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are similar to some types of already observed Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). Using recent satellite data on GRBs, an upper limit to the negative mass density -- ${\cal O} (10^{-36})$ g cm$^{-3}$ -- under the form of wormhole-like objects is presented.

Brans-Dicke wormholes endowed with torsion

A two-way traversable wormhole solution in Brans-Dicke theory with torsion is obtained using the method of massive thin shells. The solution goes over general relativity for an infinite large value of the coupling parameter, however, the Brans-Dicke scalar could never be the ``carrier'' of exoticity that threads the wormhole throat.

Wormholes, Gamma Ray Bursts and the Amount of Negative Mass in the Universe

In this essay, we assume that negative mass objects can exist in the extragalactic space and analyze the consequences of their microlensing on light from distant Active Galactic Nuclei. We find that such events have very similar features to some observed Gamma Ray Bursts and use recent satellite data to set an upper bound to the amount of negative mass in the universe.

Cylindrically symmetric spinning Brans-Dicke spacetimes with closed timelike curves

We present here three new solutions of Brans-Dicke theory for a stationary geometry with cylindrical symmetry in the presence of matter in rigid rotation with $T^μ_μ\neq 0$. All the solutions have eternal closed timelike curves in some region of the spacetime, the size of which depends on $ω$. Moreover, two of them do not go over a solution of general relativity in the limit $ω\to \infty$.

Wormholes in spacetime with torsion

Analytical wormhole solutions in $U_4$ theory are presented. It is discussed whether the extremely short range repulsive forces, related to the spin angular momentum of matter, could be the ``carrier'' of the exoticity that threads the wormhole throat.

Evolving wormhole geometries

We present here analytical solutions of General Relativity that describe evolving wormholes with a non-constant redshift function. We show that the matter that threads these wormholes is not necessarily exotic. Finally, we investigate some issues concerning WEC violation and human traversability in these time-dependent geometries.

Vacuum static Brans-Dicke wormhole

A simple Lorentzian vacuum wormhole solution of Brans-Dicke gravitation is presented and analysed. It is shown that such solution holds for both, the Brans-Dicke theory endowed with torsion (for a value of the coupling parameter $ω> 1/2$) and for the vacuum -no torsion- case (for $ω< -2$).

Brans-Dicke wormholes in nonvacuum spacetime

Analytical wormhole solutions in Brans-Dicke theory in the presence of matter are presented. It is shown that the wormhole throat must not be necessarily threaded with exotic matter.
