Prospects for macroscopic dark matter detection at space-based and suborbital experiments

We compare two different formalisms for modeling the energy deposition of macroscopically sized/massive quark nuggets (a.k.a. macros) in the Earth's atmosphere. We show that for a reference mass of 1 g, there is a discrepancy in the macro luminosity of about 14 orders of magnitude between the predictions of the two formalisms. Armed with our finding we estimate the sensitivity for macro detection at space-based (Mini-EUSO and POEMMA) and suborbital (EUSO-SPB2) experiments.

Dark energy, Ricci-nonflat spaces, and the Swampland

It was recently pointed out that the existence of dark energy imposes highly restrictive constraints on effective field theories that satisfy the Swampland conjectures. We provide a critical confrontation of these constraints with the cosmological framework emerging from the Salam-Sezgin model and its string realization by Cvetic, Gibbons, and Pope. We also discuss the implication of the constraints for string model building.

Decaying dark matter, the $H_0$ tension, and the lithium problem

It has long been known that the sharpened tension between the observed and inferred values of the Hubble constant $H_0$ can be alleviated if a fraction of dark matter particles of type $χ$ were produced non-thermally in association with photons $γ$ through the decays of a heavy and relatively long-lived state, viz. $X \to χ+ γ$. It was recently proposed that this model can also resolve the longstanding lithium problem if $M= 4$ MeV and $m = 0.04$ keV, where $M$ and $m$ are respectively the masses of $X$ and $χ$. We confront this proposal with experiment and demonstrate that cold dark matter decaying before recombination cannot resolve the $H_0$ problem. Moreover, we show that the best case scenario for alleviating the $H_0$ tension within the context of cold dark matter decaying before recombination arises when the particles decay exclusively into dark radiation, while leaving completely unmodified the production of light elements. To this end we calculate the general functional form describing the number of equivalent light neutrino species $ΔN_{eff}$ carried by $χ$. We show that to resolve the $H_0$ tension at the $1σ$ level a 55% correction in $m$ is needed and that the required $ΔN_{eff}$ is excluded at 95% CL by Planck data. We argue in favor of a more complex model of dynamical dark matter to relax the $H_0$ tension.

Cosmology Intertwined III: $f σ_8$ and $S_8$

The standard $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model provides a wonderful fit to current cosmological data, but a few tensions and anomalies became statistically significant with the latest data analyses. While these anomalies could be due to the presence of systematic errors in the experiments, they could also indicate the need for new physics beyond the standard model. In this Letter of Interest we focus on the tension of the Planck data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $Ω_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($σ_8,fσ_8$). We list a few interesting models for solving this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit with a single model a full array of data and not just one parameter at a time.

Cosmology Intertwined II: The Hubble Constant Tension

The current cosmological probes have provided a fantastic confirmation of the standard $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model, that has been constrained with unprecedented accuracy. However, with the increase of the experimental sensitivity a few statistically significant tensions between different independent cosmological datasets emerged. While these tensions can be in portion the result of systematic errors, the persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the need for new physics. In this Letter of Interest we will focus on the $4.4σ$ tension between the Planck estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we will list a few interesting new physics models that could solve this tension and discuss how the next decade experiments will be crucial.

Cosmology Intertwined I: Perspectives for the Next Decade

The standard $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model provides an amazing description of a wide range of astrophysical and astronomical data. However, there are a few big open questions, that make the standard model look like a first-order approximation to a more realistic scenario that still needs to be fully understood. In this Letter of Interest we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances present between the different cosmological probes, as the Hubble constant $H_0$ value, the $σ_8 - S_8$ tension, and the anomalies present in the Planck results. Finally, we will give an overview of upgraded experiments and next-generation space-missions and facilities on Earth, that will be of crucial importance to address all these questions.

Cosmology Intertwined IV: The Age of the Universe and its Curvature

A precise measurement of the curvature of the Universe is of primeval importance for cosmology since it could not only confirm the paradigm of primordial inflation but also help in discriminating between different early Universe scenarios. The recent observations, while broadly consistent with a spatially flat standard $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) model, are showing tensions that still allow (and, in some cases, even suggest) a few percent deviations from a flat universe. In particular, the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background power spectra, assuming the nominal likelihood, prefer a closed universe at more than 99\% confidence level. While new physics could be in action, this anomaly may be the result of an unresolved systematic error or just a statistical fluctuation. However, since a positive curvature allows a larger age of the Universe, an accurate determination of the age of the oldest objects provides a smoking gun in confirming or falsifying the current flat $Λ$CDM model.

Anomalous $U(1)$ Gauge Bosons as Light Dark Matter in String Theory

Present experiments are sensitive to very weakly coupled extra gauge symmetries which motivates further investigation of their appearance in string theory compactifications and subsequent properties. We consider extensions of the standard model based on open strings ending on D-branes, with gauge bosons due to strings attached to stacks of D-branes and chiral matter due to strings stretching between intersecting D-branes. Assuming that the fundamental string mass scale saturates the current LHC limit and that the theory is weakly coupled, we show that (anomalous) $U(1)$ gauge bosons which propagate into the bulk are compelling light dark matter candidates. We comment on the possible relevance of the $U(1)$ gauge bosons, which are universal in intersecting D-brane models, to the observed $3σ$ excess in XENON1T.

POEMMA's Target of Opportunity Sensitivity to Cosmic Neutrino Transient Sources

We investigate the capability of the Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) in performing Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) neutrino observations. POEMMA will detect tau neutrinos via Cherenkov radiation from their upward-moving extensive air showers. POEMMA will be able to quickly slew ($90^{\circ}$ in 500 s) to the direction of an astrophysical source, which in combination with its orbital speed will provide it with unparalleled capability to follow up transient alerts. We calculate POEMMA's transient sensitivity for two observational modes for its two satellites (ToO-stereo and ToO-dual) and investigate variations in neutrino sensitivity across the sky arising from POEMMA's orbit. We explore separate scenarios for long ($\sim 10^{6}$ s) and short ($\sim 10^3$ s) bursts, accounting for intrusion from the Sun and the Moon in long-duration scenarios. For long bursts, POEMMA will improve the average neutrino sensitivity above 300 PeV by up to a factor of 7 with respect to existing experiments (e.g., IceCube, ANTARES, and Pierre Auger), reaching the level of model predictions for neutrino fluences at these energies from several types of long-duration astrophysical transients (e.g., binary neutron star mergers and tidal disruption events). For short bursts in the optimal case, POEMMA will improve the sensitivity over existing experiments by at least an order of magnitude above 100 PeV. POEMMA's orbit and rapid slewing will provide access to the full celestial sky, including regions not accessible to ground-based experiments. Finally, we discuss the prospects for detecting neutrinos from candidate astrophysical neutrino sources in the nearby universe. Our results demonstrate that with its improved neutrino sensitivity at ultra-high energies and unique full-sky coverage, POEMMA will be an essential component in an expanding multi-messenger network.

Through the Looking-Glass with ALICE into the Quark-Gluon Plasma: A New Test for Hadronic Interaction Models Used in Air Shower Simulations

Recently, the ALICE Collaboration reported an enhancement of the yield ratio of strange and multi-strange hadrons to charged pions as a function of multiplicity at mid-rapidity in proton-proton, proton-lead, lead-lead, and xenon-xenon scattering. ALICE observations provide a strong indication that a quark-gluon plasma is partly formed in high multiplicity events of both small and large colliding systems. Motivated by ALICE's results, we propose a new test for hadronic interaction models used for analyzing ultra-high-energy-cosmic-ray (UHECR) collisions with air nuclei. The test is grounded in the almost equal column-energy density in UHECR-air collisions and lead-lead collisions at the LHC. We applied the test to post-LHC event generators describing hadronic phenomena of UHECR scattering and show that these QCD Monte Carlo-based codes must be retuned to accommodate the strangeness enhancement relative to pions observed in LHC data.

A Physics Modeling Study of SARS-CoV-2 Transport in Air

The health threat from SARS-CoV-2 airborne infection has become a public emergency of international concern. During the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, people have been advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to maintain social distancing of at least 2 m to limit the risk of exposure to the coronavirus. Experimental data, however, show that infected aerosols and droplets trapped inside a turbulent puff cloud can travel up to 7 to 8 m. We propose a nuclear physics analogy-based modeling of the complex gas cloud and its payload of pathogen-virions. We show that the cloud stopping range is proportional to the product of the puff's diameter and its density. We use our puff model to determine the average density of the buoyant fluid in the turbulent cloud. A fit to the experimental data yields $1.8 < ρ_P/ρ_{\rm air} < 4.0$, where $ρ_P$ and $ρ_{\rm air}$ are the average density of the puff and the air. We demonstrate that temperature variation could cause an ${\cal O}(\pm 8\%)$ effect in the puff stopping range for extreme ambient cold or warmth. We also demonstrate that aerosols and droplets can remain suspended for hours in the air. Therefore, once the puff slows down sufficiently, and its coherence is lost, the eventual spreading of the infected aerosols becomes dependent on the ambient air currents and turbulence.

Radio Detection of Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays with Low Lunar Orbiting SmallSats

Ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are the most energetic particles observed and serve as a probe of the extreme universe. A key question to understanding the violent processes responsible for their acceleration is identifying which classes of astrophysical objects (active galactic nuclei or starburst galaxies, for example) correlate to their arrival directions. While source clustering is limited by deflections in the Galactic magnetic field, at the highest energies the scattering angles are sufficiently low to retain correlation with source catalogues. While there have been several studies attempting to identify source catalogue correlations with data from the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array, the significance above an isotropic background has not yet reached the threshold for discovery. It has been known for several decades that a full-sky UHECR observatory would provide a substantial increase in sensitivity to the anisotropic component of UHECRs. There have been several concepts developed in that time targeting the identification of UHECR sources such as OWL, JEM-EUSO, and POEMMA, using fluorescence detection in the Earth's atmosphere from orbit. In this white paper, we present a concept called the Zettavolt Askaryan Polarimeter (ZAP), designed to identify the source of UHECRs using radio detection of the Askaryan radio emissions produced by UHECRs interacting in the Moon's regolith from low lunar orbit.

A physicist view of COVID-19 airborne infection through convective airflow in indoor spaces

[Abridged] Naturally produced droplets from humans (such as those produced by breathing, talking, sneezing, and coughing) include several types of cells (e.g., epithelial cells and cells of the immune system), physiological electrolytes contained in mucous and saliva (e.g. Na+, K+, Cl-), as well as, potentially, several infectious agents (e.g. bacteria, fungi, and viruses). In response to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, which has become a major public health issue worldwide, we provide a concise overview of airborne germ transmission as seen from a physics perspective. We study whether coronavirus aerosols can travel far from the immediate neighborhood and get airborne with the convective currents developed within confined spaces. We also provide a recommendation that could help to slow down the spread of the virus.

Exploring the superwind mechanism for generating ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays using large-scale modeling of starbursts

The Pierre Auger Collaboration has provided a compelling indication for a possible correlation between the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays and nearby starburst galaxies. Herein we show how the latest large-scale modeling of starburst galaxies is compatible with the cosmic rays producing the anisotropy signal being accelerated at the terminal shock of superwinds.

El Modelo Estandar de la Cosmologia Moderna en Jaque

The standard model of modern cosmology provides a description of a wide range of astrophysical and astronomical data. However, despite this impressive success, several discrepancies have have persisted. Most strikingly, the emerging tension in the observed and inferred values of the Hubble constant. This constant parameterizes the rate of expansion of the cosmos and thus provides clues about its energy content. In this article we examine the origin of this discrepancy and we explore possible solutions to overcome the problem.

$H_0$ tension and the String Swampland

[Abridged] We realize the Agrawal-Obied-Vafa (AOV) swampland proposal of fading dark matter by the model of Salam-Sezgin and its string realization of Cvetic-Gibbons-Pope. The model describes a compactification of 6-dimensional supergravity with a monopole background on a 2-sphere. In 4 dimensions, there are 2 scalar fields, $X$ and $Y $, and the effective potential in the Einstein frame is an exponential with respect to $Y$ times a quadratic polynomial in the field $e^{-X}$. When making the volume of the 2-sphere large, namely for large values of $Y$, there appears a tower of states, which according to the infinite distance swampland conjecture becomes exponentially massless. If the standard model fields are confined on Neveu-Schwarz 5-branes the 6-dimensional gauge couplings are independent of the string dilaton in the string frame, and upon compactification to 4 dimensions the 4-dimensional gauge couplings depend on $X$ (rather than the dilaton $Y$) which is fixed at the minimum of the potential. This avoids direct couplings of the dilaton to matter suppressing extra forces competing with gravity. We show that this set up has the salient features of the AOV models, and ergo can potentially ameliorate the tension between local distance ladder and cosmic microwave background estimates of the Hubble constant $H_0$. Although the AOV proposal does not fully resolve the tension in $H_0$ measurements, it provides a dynamical dark energy model of cosmology that satisfies the de Sitter swampland conjecture. We comment on a viable solution to overcome the tension between low- and high-redshift observations within the AOV background and discuss the implications for the swampland program.

Toward a robust inference method for the likelihood of low-luminosity gamma-ray bursts to be progenitors of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays correlating with starburst galaxies

Very recently, the Pierre Auger Collaboration reported a $4.5σ$ correlation between the arrival directions of the highest energy cosmic rays and nearby starburst galaxies. The cosmic rays producing the anisotropy signal have been proposed to originate in low-luminosity gamma-ray bursts (llGRBs). On the basis of the well-justified assumption that at redshift $z<0.3$ the host metallicity is a good indicator of the llGRB production rate, we show that the association of llGRBs and the starbursts correlating with Auger data is excluded at the 90% confidence level.
