Quantum Impurities as Probes of Finite-Temperature Fluctuations in Two-Dimensional Bose Gases

Two-dimensional quantum gases provide a distinctive setting in which enhanced thermal fluctuations, finite-size effects, and two-body bound-state formation are intrinsically intertwined. In this work, we study a single attractive impurity immersed in a finite, weakly interacting two-dimensional Bose gas, where finite size stabilizes a nonzero condensate fraction by introducing an infrared momentum scale, thereby enabling a Bogoliubov description of the bath. Using a hybrid approach that combines finite-temperature many-body scattering theory with input from path-integral Monte Carlo, we analyze the impurity quasiparticle energy across the condensate and normal regimes. The infrared scale generates a phonon-activation temperature below which the impurity energy remains nearly temperature independent. Once the resolved phonon modes become thermally populated, their contribution competes with condensate depletion, producing a nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the polaron energy. These results suggest that attractive Bose polarons may serve as sensitive probes of finite-size thermal fluctuations, phonon dressing, and bound-state physics in low-dimensional Bose gases.

Lattice polarons with extended interactions

Lattice impurities have recently emerged as a platform in which polarons unveil new quantum many-body states absent in free space and can serve to probe strongly correlated matter. In this work, we investigate two-dimensional lattice polarons with strong on-site repulsion and tunable nearest-neighbor interactions using a variational approach including up to one excitation of the medium. We show that extended interactions qualitatively modify the quasiparticle structure beyond the conventional attractive and repulsive polaron picture. A direct analysis of the eigenvalue spectrum reveals the presence of dark impurity states, orthogonal to the bare impurity and therefore spectroscopically dark. These states exhibit nontrivial internal structure, including dipolar symmetries in real space. Our results demonstrate that long-range interactions generate multiple quasiparticle excitations with distinct symmetry properties, highlighting the crucial role of interaction range and lattice geometry. This work opens new avenues for probing hidden quasiparticle states in lattice systems through spectroscopic and wave-function-resolved measurements.

Polaronic dressing of bound states

Polarons have emerged as a powerful concept across many-fields in physics to study an impurity coupled to a quantum bath. The interplay between impurity physics and the formation of composite objects remains a relevant problem to understand how few- and many-body states are robust towards complex environments and polaron physics. In most cases, impurities are point-like objects. The question we address here is how quasiparticle properties are affected when impurities possess an internal structure. The simplest yet fundamental structure for the impurity is a dimer state. Here, we investigate the polaronic properties of a dimer dressed by the elementary excitations of a bosonic bath. We solve the two-body impurity-impurity problem to determine the position and broadening of the bound state and consider the polaron dressing using a field-theory approach. We demonstrate the emergence of different dressed dimer regimes, where polaron dressing drives a dimer from a well-defined to an ill-defined bound state.

Impurities and polarons in bosonic quantum gases: a review on recent progress

This review describes the field of Bose polarons, arising when mobile impurities are immersed into a bosonic quantum gas. The latter can be realized by a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of ultracold atoms, or of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor, which has led to a series of experimental observations of Bose polarons near inter-species Feshbach resonances that we survey. Following an introduction to the topic, with references to its historic roots and a presentation of the Bose polaron Hamiltonian, we summarize state-of-the-art experiments. Next we provide a detailed discussion of polaron models, starting from the ubiquitous Fröhlich Hamiltonian that applies at weak couplings. We proceed by a survey of concurrent theoretical methods used for solving strongly interacting Bose polaron problems. The subsequent sections are devoted to the large bodies of work investigating strong coupling Bose polarons, including detailed comparisons with radio-frequency (RF) spectra obtained in ultracold atom experiments; to investigations of universal few-body and Efimov states associated with a Feshbach resonance in atomic mixtures; to studies of quantum dynamics and polarons out of equilibrium; Bose polarons in low-dimensional; induced interactions among polarons and bipolaron formation; and to Bose polarons at non-zero temperatures. We end our review by detailed discussions of closely related experimental setups and systems, including ionic impurities, systems with strong light-matter interactions, and variations and extensions of the Bose polaron concepts e.g. to baths with topological order or strong interactions relevant for correlated electrons. Finally, an outlook is presented, highlighting possible future research directions and open questions in the field as a whole.

Universal properties of dipolar Bose polarons in two dimensions

We study the quasiparticle properties of a dipolar impurity immersed in a two-dimensional dipolar bath. We use the ab-initio Diffusion Monte Carlo technique to determine the polaron energy, effective mass and quasiparticle residue. We find that both the polaron energy and quasiparticle residue follow a universal behaviour with respect to the polarization angle when properly scaled in terms of the scattering length. This trend is maintained over a wide range of values of the gas parameter, even in the highly correlated regime. Instead, the effective mass shows growing anisotropy as the tilting angle is increased, which is induced, mainly, by the anisotropy of the impurity-boson dipole-dipole interaction. Surprisingly, the effective mass is larger in the direction of minimum inter-particle repulsion. Finally, we use our Monte Carlo results to check the accuracy of perturbative approaches and determine their range of validity in terms of the gas parameter.

Modified mean field ansatz for charged polarons in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Ionic Bose polarons are quantum entities emerging from the interaction between an ion and a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), featuring long-ranged interactions that can compete with the gas healing length. This can result in strong interparticle correlations and enhancement of gas density around the ion. One possible approach to describe this complex system with high accuracy relies on numerical treatment such as the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques. Nevertheless, it is computationally very expensive and does not easily allow to study the system dynamics. On the other hand, a mean-field based variational ansatz in the co-moving frame can capture a sizeable change in the gas density. We apply it to the case of regularized ion-atom potential and find that it qualitatively reproduces the full numerical results. In addition, we also study the system of two pinned ions, focusing on their effective interaction induced by the bath. This approach seems to be promising for studying transport and nonequilibrium dynamics of charged (bi)polarons in condensed media.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of dipolar polarons

We study the out-of-equilibrium quantum dynamics of dipolar polarons, i.e., impurities immersed in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, after a quench of the impurity-boson interaction. We show that the dipolar nature of the condensate and of the impurity results in anisotropic relaxation dynamics, in particular, anisotropic dressing of the polaron. More relevantly for cold-atom setups, quench dynamics is strongly affected by the interplay between dipolar anisotropy and trap geometry. Our findings pave the way for simulating impurities in anisotropic media utilizing experiments with dipolar mixtures.

Alternating-domain supersolids in binary dipolar condensates

Two-component dipolar condensates are now experimentally producible, and we theoretically investigate the nature of supersolidity in this system. We predict the existence of a binary supersolid state in which the two components form a series of alternating domains, producing an immiscible double supersolid. Remarkably, we find that a dipolar component can even induce supersolidity in a nondipolar component. In stark contrast to single-component dipolar supersolids, alternating-domain supersolids do not require quantum stabilization, and the number of crystal sites is not strictly limited by the condensate populations, with the density hence being substantially lower. Our results are applicable to a wide range of dipole moment combinations, marking an important step towards long-lived bulk-supersolidity.

Quantum behavior of a heavy impurity strongly coupled to a Bose gas

We investigate the problem of an infinitely heavy impurity interacting with a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature. When the impurity-boson interactions are short ranged, we show that boson-boson interactions induce a quantum blockade effect, where a single boson can effectively block or screen the impurity potential. Since this behavior depends on the quantum granular nature of the Bose gas, it cannot be captured within a standard classical-field description. Using a combination of exact quantum Monte Carlo methods and a truncated basis approach, we show how the quantum correlations between bosons lead to universal few-body bound states and a logarithmically slow dependence of the polaron ground-state energy on the boson-boson scattering length. Moreover, we expose the link between the polaron energy and the spatial structure of the quantum correlations, spanning the infrared to ultraviolet physics.

Critical slowdown of non-equilibrium polaron dynamics

We study the quantum dynamics of a single impurity following its sudden immersion into a Bose-Einstein condensate. The ensuing formation of the Bose polaron in this general setting can be seen as impurity decoherence driven by the condensate, which we describe within a master equation approach. We derive rigorous analytical results for this decoherence dynamics, and thereby reveal distinct stages of its evolution from a universal stretched exponential initial relaxation to the final approach to equilibrium. The associated polaron formation time exhibits a strong dependence on the impurity speed and is found to undergo a critical slowdown around the speed of sound of the condensate. This rich non-equilibrium behaviour of quantum impurities is of direct relevance to recent cold atom experiments, in which Bose polarons are created by a sudden quench of the impurity-bath interaction.

Measuring the single-particle density matrix for fermions and hard-core bosons in an optical lattice

Ultracold atoms in optical lattices provide clean, tunable, and well-isolated realizations of paradigmatic quantum lattice models. With the recent advent of quantum-gas microscopes, they now also offer the possibility to measure the occupations of individual lattice sites. What, however, has not yet been achieved is to measure those elements of the single-particle density matrix, which are off-diagonal in the occupation basis. Here, we propose a scheme to access these basic quantities both for fermions as well as hard-core bosons and investigate its accuracy and feasibility. The scheme relies on the engineering of a large effective tunnel coupling between distant lattice sites and a protocol that is based on measuring site occupations after two subsequent quenches.
