Photon escape from the ISCO of a rotating black hole in Asymptotic Safety

We study isotropic emission of photons from the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a subextremal rotating black hole (BH) in asymptotic safety (AS). We calculate both the photon escape probability (PEP) and the maximum observable blueshift (MOB) of photons to reach infinity, and compare with the corresponding results for photon emission from the ISCO of a classical Kerr BH. In AS, quantum gravity effects reduce the radius of the ISCO, therefore quantum gravity effects should reduce the PEP and MOB of photons from emitters moving on the ISCO. We show that this is not the case and that, when rotating BHs with high spin are considered and the quantum parameter (which encodes the quantum gravity effects) increases towards its critical value, which is different for different spin values, the PEP and MOB also increase despite the reduction of the ISCO radius. Our results on the PEP show explicitly how quantum gravity effects start to dominate over the classical background at the level of the ISCO. We also briefly discuss the relation between these quantum gravity modifications and particular features of the shadow of a rotating BH in AS.

FCNC, CP violation and implications for some rare decays in an SU(4)_L X U(1)_X extension of the standard model

Extensions of the standard model (SM) with gauge symmetry SU(3)_c X SU(4)_L X U(1)_X (3-4-1 extensions) where anomaly cancellation takes place between the fermion families (three-family models) predict the existence of two new heavy neutral gauge bosons which transmit flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) at tree-level. In this work, in the context of a three-family 3-4-1 extension which does not contain particles with exotic electric charges, we study the constraints coming from neutral meson mixing on the parameters of the extension associated to tree level FCNC effects. Taking into account experimental measurements of observables related to K and B meson mixing and including new CP-violating phases, we study the resulting bounds for angles and phases in the mixing matrix for the down-quark sector, as well as the implications of these bounds for the modifications in the amplitudes of the clean rare decays K^+ -> π^+ \barνν, K_{L} -> π^0 ν\barν, K_L -> π^0 l^+ l^- (l=e,μ) and B_{d/s} -> μ^+ μ^-.

Phenomenology of a three-family model with gauge symmetry SU(3)_c X SU(4)_L X U(1)_X

We study an extension of the gauge group SU(3)_c X SU(2)_L X U(1)_Y of the standard model to the symmetry group SU(3)_c X SU(4)_L X U(1)_X (3-4-1 for short). This extension provides an interesting attempt to answer the question of family replication in the sense that models for the electroweak interaction can be constructed so that anomaly cancellation is achieved by an interplay between generations, all of them under the condition that the number of families must be divisible by the number of colours of SU(3)_c. This method of anomaly cancellation requires a family of quarks transforming differently from the other two, thus leading to tree-level flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) transmitted by the two extra neutral gauge bosons $Z'$ and $Z''$ predicted by the model. In a version of the 3-4-1 extension, which does not contain particles with exotic electric charges, we study the fermion mass spectrum and some aspects of the phenomenology of the neutral gauge boson sector. In particular, we impose limits on the $Z-Z'$ mixing angle and on the mass scale of the corresponding physical new neutral gauge boson $Z_2$, and establish a lower bound on the mass of the additional new neutral gauge boson $Z'' \equiv Z_3$. For the analysis we use updated precision electroweak data at the Z-pole from the CERN LEP and SLAC Linear Collider, and atomic parity violation data. The mass scale of the additional new neutral gauge boson $Z_3$ is constrained by using updated experimental inputs from neutral meson mixing in the analysis of the sources of FCNC in the model. The data constrain the $Z-Z'$ mixing angle to a very small value of O(0.001), and the lower bounds on $M_{Z_2}$ and on $M_{Z_3}$ are found to be of O(1 TeV) and of O(7 TeV), repectively.

Effects of quark family nonuniversality in SU(3)_c X SU(4)_L X U(1)_x models

Flavour changing neutral currents arise in the $SU(3)_c\otimes SU(4)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ extension of the standard model because anomaly cancellation among the fermion families requires one generation of quarks to transform differently from the other two under the gauge group. In the weak basis the distinction between quark families is meaningless. However, in the mass eigenstates basis, the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix motivates us to classify left-handed quarks in families. In this sense there are, in principle, three different assignments of quark weak eigenstates into mass eigenstates. In this work, by using measurements at the Z-pole, atomic parity violation data and experimental input from neutral meson mixing, we examine two different models without exotic electric charges based on the 3-4-1 symmetry, and address the effects of quark family nonuniversality on the bounds on the mixing angle between two of the neutral currents present in the models and on the mass scales $M_{Z_2}$ and $M_{Z_3}$ of the new neutral gauge bosons predicted by the theory. The heaviest family of quarks must transform differently in order to keep lower bounds on $M_{Z_2}$ and $M_{Z_3}$ as low as possible without violating experimental constraints.

SU(4)_L X U(1)_X three-family model for the electroweak interaction

An extension of the gauge group $SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$ of the standard model to the symmetry group $SU(4)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ (3-4-1 for short) is presented. The model does not contain exotic electric charges and anomaly cancellation is achieved with a family of quarks transforming differently from the other two, thus leading to FCNC. By introducing a discrete $Z_2$ symmetry we obtain a consistent fermion mass spectrum, and avoid unitarity violation of the CKM mixing matrix arising from the mixing of ordinary and exotic quarks. The neutral currents coupled to all neutral vector bosons are studied, and by using CERN LEP and SLAC Linear Collider data at Z-pole and atomic parity violation data, we bound parameters of the model related to tree-level $Z-Z^\prime$ mixing. These parameters are further constrained by using experimental input from neutral meson mixing in the analysis of sources of FCNC present in the model. Constraints coming from the contribution of exotic particles to the one-loop oblique electroweak parameters $S$, $T$ and $U$ are also briefly discussed. Finally, a comparison is done of the predictions of different classes of 3-4-1 models without exotic electric charges.

Systematic study of the SU(3)_c X SU(4)_L X U(1)_X gauge symmetry

We carry a systematic study of possible extensions of the standard model based on the gauge group SU(3)_c X SU(4)_L X U(1)_X. We consider both models with particles with exotic electric charges and models which do not contain exotic electric charges neither in the gauge boson sector nor in the fermion sector. For the first case an infinite number of models can, in principle, be constructed, while the restriction to non-exotic electric charges only allows for eight different anomaly-free models. Four of them are three-family models in the sense that anomalies cancel by an interplay between the three families, and another two are one-family models where anomalies cancel family by family as in the standard model. The remaining two are two-family models.

Phenomenology of the SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X model with right-handed neutrinos

A phenomenological analysis of the three-family local gauge group $SU(3)_c\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ with right-handed neutrinos is carried out. Instead of using the minimal scalar sector able to break the symmetry in a proper way, we introduce an alternative set of four Higgs scalar triplets, which combined with an anomaly-free discrete symmetry, produces a quark mass spectrum without hierarchies in the Yukawa coupling contants. We also embed the structure into a simple gauge group and show some conditions to achieve a low energy gauge coupling unification, avoiding possible conflict with proton decay bounds. By using experimental results from the CERN-LEP, SLAC linear collider and atomic parity violation data, we update constraints on several parameters of the model.

Study of the SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X model with the minimal scalar sector

A study of the three-family local gauge group SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X with right-handed neutrinos is carried out. We use the minimal scalar sector able to break the symmetry in a proper way and produce, at the same time, masses for the fermion fields. We embed the structure into a simple gauge group and, by using experimental results from the CERN LEP, SLAC linear collider and atomic parity violation data, we also constraint relevant parameters for the new neutral and charged currents. We discuss the mass spectrum for the gauge boson sector and for the spin 1/2 particles. With the use of discrete symmetries and the introduction of extra scalar fields, a consistent mass spectrum could be constructed.

Dark matter from the scalar sector of 3-3-1 models without exotic electric charges

We show that three SU(2) singlet neutral scalars (two CP-even and one CP-odd) in the spectrum of models based on the gauge symmetry SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X, which do not contain exotic electric charges, are realistic candidates for thermally generated self-interacting dark matter in the Universe, a type of dark matter that has been recently proposed in order to overcome some difficulties of collisionless cold dark matter models at the galactic scale. These candidates arise without introducing a new mass scale in the model and/or without the need for a discrete symmetry to stabilize them, but at the expense of tuning several combinations of parameters of the scalar potential.

Hierarchical radiative masses in a supersymmetric three-family model without Higgsinos

We study the scalar potential and the mass spectrum of the supersymmetric extension of a three-family model based on the local gauge group $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$, with anomalies canceled among the three families in a nontrivial fashion. In this model the slepton multiplets play the role of the Higgs scalars and no Higgsinos are needed, with the consequence that the sneutrino, the selectron and six other sleptons play the role of the Goldstone bosons of the theory. By introducing an Abelian anomaly-free discrete symmetry and aligning the vacuum in a convenient way, we get a consistent mass spectrum for the scalars and for the spin 1/2 quarks and charged leptons, where only the top and charm quarks and the tau lepton acquire tree level masses while the remaining ordinary charged fermions acquire radiative hierarchical masses.

SU(3)_c X SU(4)_L X U(1)_x model for three families

An extension of the Standard Model to the local gauge group $SU(3)_c\otimes SU(4)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ as a three-family model is presented. The model does not contain exotic electric charges and we obtain a consistent mass spectrum by introducing an anomaly-free discrete $Z_2$ symmetry. The neutral currents coupled to all neutral vector bosons in the model are studied. By using experimental results from the CERN LEP, SLAC Linear Collider and atomic parity violation we constrain the mixing angle between two of the neutral currents in the model and the mass of the additional neutral gauge bosons to be $-0.0032\leq\sinθ\leq 0.0031$ and $0.67 \hbox{TeV}\leq M_{Z_2} \leq 6.1$ TeV at 95% C.L., respectively.

SU(3)_c X SU(4)_L X U(1)_x without exotic electric charges

We present an extension of the Standard Model to the local gauge group $SU(3)_c\otimes SU(4)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ with a family non-universal treatment and anomalies canceled among the three families in a nontrivial fashion. The mass scales, the gauge boson masses, and the masses for the spin 1/2 particles in the model are analyzed. The neutral currents coupled to all neutral vector bosons in the model are studied, and particular values of the parameters are used in order to simplify the mixing between the three neutral currents present in the theory, mixing which is further constrained by experimental results from the CERN LEP, SLAC Linear Collider, and atomic parity violation.

Supersymmetric One-family Model without Higgsinos

The Higgs potential and the mass spectrum of the N=1 supersymmetric extension of a recently proposed one-family model based on the local gauge group $SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X$, which is a subgroup of the electroweak-strong unification group $E_6$, is analyzed. In this model the slepton multiplets play the role of the Higgs scalars and no Higgsinos are needed, with the consequence that the sneutrino, the selectron and six other sleptons play the role of the Goldstone bosons. We show how the $μ$ problem is successfully addressed in the context of this model which also predicts the existence of a light CP-odd scalar.

Minimal Scalar Sector of 3-3-1 Models without Exotic Electric Charges

We study the minimal set of Higgs scalars, for models based on the local gauge group $SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X$ which do not contain particles with exotic electric charges. We show that only two Higgs $SU(3)_L$ triplets are needed in order to properly break the symmetry. The exact tree-level scalar mass matrices resulting from symmetry breaking are calculated at the minimum of the most general scalar potential, and the gauge bosons are obtained, together with their couplings to the physical scalar fields. We show how the scalar sector introduced is enough to produce masses for fermions in a particular model which is an $E_6$ subgroup. By using experimental results we constrain the scale of new physics to be above 1.3 TeV.

Analysis of SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X local gauge theory

Six different models, straightforward extensions of the standard model to SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X, which do not contain particles with exotic electric charges are described. Two of the models are one family and four are three family models. In two of the three family models one of the families transforms different from the others, and in the other two all the three families are different.

$SU(3)_c\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ as an $E_6$ Subgroup

An extension of the Standard Model to the local gauge group $SU(3)_c\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ which is a subgroup of the electroweak-strong unification group $E_6$ is analyzed. The mass scales, the gauge boson masses, and the masses for the spin 1/2 particles in the model are calculated. The mass differences between the up and down quark sectors, between the quarks and leptons, and between the charged and neutral leptons in one family are explained as a consequence of mixing of ordinary with exotic fermions implied by the model. By using experimental results we constrain the mixing angle between the two neutral currents and the mass of the additional neutral gauge boson to be $-0.0015 \leq \sinθ\leq 0.0048$ and $600 GeV \leq M_{Z_2}$ at 95% CL. The existence of a Dirac neutrino for each family with a mass of the order of the electroweak mass scale is predicted.

SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X as an SU(6) X U(1)_X subgroup

An extension of the Standard Model to the local gauge group SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X as a family independent model is presented. The mass scales, the gauge boson masses and the masses for the spin 1/2 particles in the model are studied. The mass differences between the up and down quark sectors, between the quarks and leptons, and between the charged and neutral leptons in one family are analyzed. The existence of two Dirac neutrinos for each family, one light and one very heavy, is predicted. By using experimental results from LEP, SLC and atomic parity violation we constrain the mixing angle between the two neutral currents and the mass of the additoinal neutral gauge boson to be 0.00013 \leq sinθ \leq 0 and 1.5 TeV \leq M_Z2 at 95% CL.
