Gauge and global symmetries of the candidate partially massless bimetric gravity

In this paper we investigate a particular ghost-free bimetric theory that exhibits the partially massless (PM) symmetry at quadratic order. At this order the global SO(1,4) symmetry of the theory is enhanced to SO(1,5). We show that this global symmetry becomes inconsistent at cubic order, in agreement with a previous calculation. Furthermore, we find that the PM symmetry of this theory cannot be extended beyond cubic order in the PM field. More importantly, it is shown that the PM symmetry cannot be extended to quartic order in any theory with one massless and one massive spin-2 fields.

The covariant action of higher spin black holes in three dimensions

We propose a set of boundary terms for higher spin theories in AdS$_3$ that lead to a well-defined variational principle compatible with Dirichlet boundary conditions for the metric and higher spin fields. These boundary terms are valid for higher spin theories in the Fefferman-Graham gauge and they allow us to compute the canonical free energy of higher spin black holes directly from the Euclidean, covariant, on-shell action. Using these results we reproduce the thermodynamics of the higher spin black hole of Ammon, Gutperle, Kraus, and Perlmutter and comment on the corresponding theory of induced $\cal{W}$-gravity at the boundary.

The sky is the limit: free boundary conditions in AdS$_3$ Chern-Simons theory

We test the effects of new diffeomorphism invariant boundary terms in SL(2,R)$\times$SL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory. The gravitational interpretation corresponds to free AdS$_3$ boundary conditions, without restrictions on the boundary geometry. The boundary theory is the theory of a string in a target AdS$_3$. Its Virasoro conditions can eliminate ghosts. Generalisations to SL(N,R)$\times$SL(N,R) higher spin theories and many other questions are still unexplored.

Strings from 3D gravity: asymptotic dynamics of AdS$_3$ gravity with free boundary conditions

Pure three-dimensional gravity in anti-de Sitter space can be formulated as an SL(2,R) $\times $ SL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory, and the latter can be reduced to a WZW theory at the boundary. In this paper we show that AdS$_3$ gravity with free boundary conditions is described by a string at the boundary whose target spacetime is also AdS$_3$. While boundary conditions in the standard construction of Coussaert, Henneaux, and van Driel are enforced through constraints on the WZW currents, we find that free boundary conditions are partially enforced through the string Virasoro constraints.

Free boundary conditions and the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence

We show that the recently proposed free boundary conditions for AdS$_3$ are dual to two-dimensional quantum gravity in certain fixed gauges. In particular, we note that an appropriate identification of the generator of Virasoro transformations leads to a vanishing total central charge in agreement with the theory at the boundary. We argue that this identification is necessary to match the bulk and boundary generators of Virasoro transformations and for consistency with the constraint equations.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Parity-Even Tricritical Gravity in Three and Four Dimensions

Recently proposed "multicritical" higher-derivative gravities in Anti de Sitter space carry logarithmic representations of the Anti de Sitter isometry group. While generically non-unitary already at the quadratic, free-theory level, in special cases these theories admit a unitary subspace. The simplest example of such behavior is "tricritical" gravity. In this paper, we extend the study of parity-even tricritical gravity in d = 3, 4 to the first nonlinear order. We show that the would-be unitary subspace suffers from a linearization instability and is absent in the full non-linear theory.

On AdS/CFT without Massless Gravitons

We point out that it is possible to define CFT duals to AdS theories with massive gravitons only. This is achieved by considering the product of two or more CFTs on the boundary, each possessing a large-N expansion and a corresponding bulk dual. It is possible to couple the CFTs through a marginal perturbation that makes all but one of the bulk gravitons massive. In the infinite-N limit for one of the CFTs the massless graviton decouples.
