Almost preserved extreme points

In this paper we introduce the notion of an almost preserved extreme point (APEP) of a set as a weakening of the concept of preserved extreme points, and we systematically study such points. As a main result, we prove that a Banach space $X$ has the Radon-Nikodým property (RNP) if and only if every closed, convex, and bounded subset of the space has an APEP. Similarly, we prove that $X$ has the RNP if and only if the unit ball of every equivalent renorming has an APEP. We further investigate APEPs of the unit ball of classical Banach spaces, absolute sums, Lipschitz-free spaces, and projective tensor products. In the latter setting, our work also describes the preserved extreme points in the unit ball under the assumption that every bounded operator is compact, thereby partially solving an open problem.

Functions in $L_1(μ,Y)$ with optimal tensor representations

We study the existence and characterization of optimal tensor representations of elements in the space $L_1(μ,Y)$ of Bochner integrable functions. We completely describe the set of norm-attaining elements in two settings. First, when the Banach space $Y$ is strictly convex, and second, when $Y=L_1(ν)$ and $\mathbb K=\mathbb R$. In both situations, our analysis yields the existence of non-norm-attaining tensors whenever the underlying measures are not purely atomic. Finally, we introduce a geometric property over $Y$ ensuring that every element in $L_1(μ, Y)$ admits an optimal representation. In particular, this holds for Lipschitz-free spaces over complete scattered metric spaces, for $C(K)$ spaces when $K$ is a compact Hausdorff totally disconnected space, and for $c_0(Γ)$ where $Γ$ is any index set. As a byproduct, we settle two open questions regarding projective norm-attainment.

Composition operators for holomorphic Lipschitz functions

We study composition operators on spaces of holomorphic Lipschitz functions defined on the open unit ball of a complex Banach space. Our approach is based on the linearization of the symbol through the holomorphic Lipschitz-free spaces, which allow composition operators to be realized as adjoints of linear operators. For spaces with the bounded approximation property, we characterize composition operators between spaces of holomorphic Lipschitz functions vanishing at the origin and describe when composition operators are onto isomorphisms. We further investigate compactness and weak compactness properties of composition operators. In the finite-dimensional setting, compactness and weak compactness are shown to coincide, and a complete characterization is obtained in terms of the symbol. Finally, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the iterates of composition operators, proving convergence to zero whenever the supremum norm of the symbol is less than one, and we extend several results to the case not vanishing at 0.

Borell's inequality and mean width of random polytopes via discrete inequalities

Borell's inequality states the existence of a positive absolute constant $C>0$ such that for every $1\leq p\leq q$ $$ \left(\mathbb E|\langle X, e_n\rangle|^p\right)^\frac{1}{p}\leq\left(\mathbb E|\langle X, e_n\rangle|^q\right)^\frac{1}{q}\leq C\frac{q}{p}\left(\mathbb E|\langle X, e_n\rangle|^p\right)^\frac{1}{p}, $$ whenever $X$ is a random vector uniformly distributed on any convex body $K\subseteq\mathbb R^n$ and $(e_i)_{i=1}^n$ is the standard canonical basis in $\mathbb R^n$. In this paper, we will prove a discrete version of this inequality, which will hold whenever $X$ is a random vector uniformly distributed on $K\cap\mathbb Z^n$ for any convex body $K\subseteq\mathbb R^n$ containing the origin in its interior. We will also make use of such discrete version to obtain discrete inequalities from which we can recover the estimate $\mathbb E w(K_N)\sim w(Z_{\log N}(K))$ for any convex body $K$ containing the origin in its interior, where $K_N$ is the centrally symmetric random polytope $K_N=\textrm{conv}\{\pm X_1,\ldots,\pm X_N\}$ generated by independent random vectors uniformly distributed on $K$, $Z_{p}(K)$ is the $L_p$-centroid body of $K$ for any $p\geq1$, and $w(\cdot)$ denotes the mean width.

Projective tensor products where every element is norm-attaining

In this paper we analyse when every element of $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ attains its projective norm. We prove that this is the case if $X$ is the dual of a subspace of a predual of an $\ell_1(I)$ space and $Y$ is $1$-complemented in its bidual under approximation properties assumptions. This result allows us to provide some new examples where $X$ is a Lipschitz-free space. We also prove that the set of norm-attaining elements is dense in $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ if, for instance, $X=L_1(μ)$ and $Y$ is any Banach space, or if $X$ has the metric $π$-property and $Y$ is a dual space with the RNP.

Linearization of holomorphic Lipschitz functions

Let $X$ and $Y$ be complex Banach spaces with $B_X$ denoting the open unit ball of $X.$ This paper studies various aspects of the {\em holomorphic Lipschitz space} $\mathcal HL_0(B_X,Y)$, endowed with the Lipschitz norm. This space is the intersection of the spaces, $\operatorname{Lip}_0(B_X,Y)$ of Lipschitz mappings and $\mathcal H^\infty(B_X,Y)$ of bounded holomorphic mappings, from $B_X$ to $Y$. Thanks to the Dixmier-Ng theorem, $\mathcal HL_0(B_X, \mathbb C)$ is indeed a dual space, whose predual $\mathcal G_0(B_X)$ shares linearization properties with both the Lipschitz-free space and Dineen-Mujica predual of $\mathcal H^\infty(B_X)$. We explore the similarities and differences between these spaces, and combine techniques to study the properties of the space of holomorphic Lipschitz functions. In particular, we get that $\mathcal G_0(B_X)$ contains a 1-complemented subspace isometric to $X$ and that $\mathcal G_0(X)$ has the (metric) approximation property whenever $X$ has it. We also analyze when $\mathcal G_0(B_X)$ is a subspace of $\mathcal G_0(B_Y)$, and we obtain an analogous to Godefroy's characterization of functionals with a unique norm preserving extension to the holomorphic Lipschitz context.

Extremal structure of projective tensor products

We prove that, given two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ and bounded, closed convex sets $C\subseteq X$ and $D\subseteq Y$, if a nonzero element $z\in \overline{\mathrm{co}}(C\otimes D)\subseteq X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ is a preserved extreme point then $z=x_0\otimes y_0$ for some preserved extreme points $x_0\in C$ and $y_0\in D$, whenever $K(X,Y^*)$ separates points of $X \widehat{\otimes}_πY$ (in particular, whenever $X$ or $Y$ has the compact approximation property). Moreover, we prove that if $x_0\in C$ and $y_0\in D$ are weak-strongly exposed points then $x_0\otimes y_0$ is weak-strongly exposed in $\overline{\mathrm{co}}(C\otimes D)$ whenever $x_0\otimes y_0$ has a neighbourhood system for the weak topology defined by compact operators. Furthermore, we find a Banach space $X$ isomorphic to $\ell_2$ with a weak-strongly exposed point $x_0\in B_X$ such that $x_0\otimes x_0$ is not a weak-strongly exposed point of the unit ball of $X\widehat{\otimes}_πX$.

Lipschitz-free spaces, ultraproducts, and finite representability of metric spaces

We study several properties and applications of the ultrapower $M_{\mathcal U}$ of a metric space $M$. We prove that the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal F(M_{\mathcal U})$ is finitely representable in $\mathcal F(M)$. We also characterize the metric spaces that are finitely Lipschitz representable in a Banach space as those that biLipschitz embed into an ultrapower of the Banach space. Thanks to this link, we obtain that if $M$ is finitely Lipschitz representable in a Banach space $X$, then $\mathcal F(M)$ is finitely representable in $\mathcal F(X)$. We apply these results to the study of cotype in Lipschitz-free spaces and the stability of Lipschitz-free spaces and spaces of Lipschitz functions under ultraproducts.

Extremal structure in ultrapowers of Banach spaces

Given a bounded convex subset $C$ of a Banach space $X$ and a free ultrafilter $\mathcal U$, we study which points $(x_i)_\mathcal U$ are extreme points of the ultrapower $C_\mathcal U$ in $X_\mathcal U$. In general, we obtain that when $\{x_i\}$ is made of extreme points (respectively denting points, strongly exposed points) and they satisfy some kind of uniformity, then $(x_i)_\mathcal U$ is an extreme point (respectively denting point, strongly exposed point) of $C_\mathcal U$. We also show that every extreme point of $C_{\mathcal U}$ is strongly extreme, and that every point exposed by a functional in $(X^*)_{\mathcal U}$ is strongly exposed, provided that $\mathcal U$ is a countably incomplete ultrafilter. Finally, we analyse the extremal structure of $C_\mathcal U$ in the case that $C$ is a super weakly compact or uniformly convex set.

On norm-attainment in (symmetric) tensor products

In this paper, we introduce a concept of norm-attainment in the projective symmetric tensor product $\widehat{\otimes}_{π,s,N} X$ of a Banach space $X$, which turns out to be naturally related to the classical norm-attainment of $N$-homogeneous polynomials on $X$. Due to this relation, we can prove that there exist symmetric tensors that do not attain their norms, which allows us to study the problem of when the set of norm-attaining elements in $\widehat{\otimes}_{π,s,N} X$ is dense. We show that the set of all norm-attaining symmetric tensors is dense in $\widehat{\otimes}_{π,s,N} X$ for a large set of Banach spaces as $L_p$-spaces, isometric $L_1$-predual spaces or Banach spaces with monotone Schauder basis, among others. Next, we prove that if $X^*$ satisfies the Radon-Nikodým and the approximation property, then the set of all norm-attaining symmetric tensors in $\widehat{\otimes}_{π,s,N} X^*$ is dense. From these techniques, we can present new examples of Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ such that the set of all norm-attaining tensors in the projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_πY$ is dense, answering positively an open question from the paper by S. Dantas, M. Jung, Ó. Roldán and A. Rueda Zoca.

Geometry and volume product of finite dimensional Lipschitz-free spaces

The goal of this paper is to study geometric and extremal properties of the convex body $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$, which is the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free Banach space associated with a finite metric space $M$. We investigate $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$-sums, in particular we characterize the metric spaces such that $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is a Hanner polytope. We also characterize the finite metric spaces whose Lipschitz-free spaces are isometric. We discuss the extreme properties of the volume product $\mathcal{P}(M)=|B_{\mathcal F(M)}|\cdot|B_{\mathcal F(M)}^\circ|$, when the number of elements of $M$ is fixed. We show that if $\mathcal P(M)$ is maximal among all the metric spaces with the same number of points, then all triangle inequalities in $M$ are strict and $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is simplicial. We also focus on the metric spaces minimizing $\mathcal P(M)$, and in the Mahler's conjecture for this class of convex bodies.

Examples and applications of the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps

We study the density of the set $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ of those Lipschitz maps from a (complete pointed) metric space $M$ to a Banach space $Y$ which strongly attain their norm (i.e.\ the supremum defining the Lipschitz norm is actually a maximum). We present new and somehow counterintuitive examples, and we give some applications. First, we show that $\operatorname{SNA}(\mathbb T,Y)$ is not dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(\mathbb T,Y)$ for any Banach space $Y$, where $\mathbb T$ denotes the unit circle in the Euclidean plane. This provides the first example of a Gromov concave metric space (i.e.\ every molecule is a strongly exposed point of the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space) for which the density does not hold. Next, we construct metric spaces $M$ satisfying that $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ is dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,Y)$ regardless $Y$ but which contains an isometric copy of $[0,1]$ and so the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal F(M)$ fails the Radon--Nikodým property, answering in the negative a posed question. Furthermore, an example $M$ can be produced failing all the previously known sufficient conditions to get the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps. Finally, among other applications, we prove that given a compact metric $M$ which does not contains any isometric copy of $[0,1]$ and a Banach space $Y$, if $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ is dense, then $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ actually contains an open dense subset and $B_{\mathcal F(M)}=\overline{\mathrm{co}}(\operatorname{str-exp}(B_{\mathcal F(M)}))$. Further, we show that if $M$ is a boundedly compact metric space for which $\operatorname{SNA}(M,\mathbb R)$ is dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,\mathbb R)$, then the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space on $M$ is the closed convex hull of its strongly exposed points.

Uniformly convex renormings and generalized cotypes

We are concerned about improvements of the modulus of convexity by renormings of a super-reflexive Banach space. Typically optimal results are beyond Pisier's power functions bounds $t^p$, with $p \geq 2$, and they are related to the notion of generalized cotype. We obtain an explicit upper bound for all the modulus of convexity of equivalent renormings and we show that if this bound is equivalent to $t^2$, the best possible, then the space admits a renorming with modulus of power type $2$. We show that a UMD space admits a renormings with modulus of convexity bigger, up to a multiplicative constant, than its cotype. We also prove the super-multiplicativity of the supremum of the set of cotypes.
