Lagrange points of the restricted three-body problem in spaces of constant curvature

We continue the study initiated by Kilin ({\em Reg. Chaot. Dyn.} 4, (1999)) and by Martínez and Simó ({\em Celest. Mech. Dynam. Astronom.} 128, (2017)) on the classification and stability of the relative equilibria of the restricted three-body problem in two-dimensional spaces of constant curvature, which generalize the classical Lagrange points of the planar problem. After formulating the problem as an autonomous Lagrangian system with two degrees of freedom, whose only parameters are the curvature $κ$ and the mass ratio $μ$ of the primaries, we establish several classification results for the case $κ>0$ by combining analytical methods with computer-assisted proofs. These results provide rigorous confirmation of phenomena for which previously only numerical evidence was available. We also provide topological explanations for the qualitative differences between the behavior of relative equilibria in positive curvature and that observed in the planar and negative-curvature cases. Our analysis focuses on the regime of small $μ$ and indicates that positive curvature has a stabilizing effect on the triangular equilibria $\Ll_4$ and $\Ll_5$, whereas negative curvature appears to have the opposite effect.

Platonic solids and symmetric solutions of the $N$-vortex problem on the sphere

We consider the $N$-vortex problem on the sphere assuming that all vortices have equal strength. We develop a theoretical framework to analyse solutions of the equations of motion with prescribed symmetries. Our construction relies on the discrete reduction of the system by twisted subgroups of the full symmetry group that rotates and permutes the vortices. Our approach formalises and extends ideas outlined previously by Tokieda (C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris I 333 (2001)) and Soulière and Tokieda (J. Fluid Mech. 460 (2002)) and allows us to prove the existence of several 1-parameter families of periodic orbits. These families either emanate from equilibria or converge to collisions possessing a specific symmetry. Our results are applied to show existence of families of small nonlinear oscillations emanating from the platonic solid equilibria.

Some remarks about the centre of mass of two particles in spaces of constant curvature

The concept of centre of mass of two particles in 2D spaces of constant Gaussian curvature is discussed by recalling the notion of "relativistic rule of lever" introduced by Galperin [Comm. Math. Phys. 154 (1993), 63--84] and comparing it with two other definitions of centre of mass that arise naturally on the treatment of the 2-body problem in spaces of constant curvature: firstly as the collision point of particles that are initially at rest, and secondly as the centre of rotation of steady rotation solutions. It is shown that if the particles have distinct masses then these definitions are equivalent only if the curvature vanishes and instead lead to three different notions of centre of mass in the general case.

Structure preserving discretization of time-reparametrized Hamiltonian systems with application to nonholonomic mechanics

We propose a discretization of vector fields that are Hamiltonian up to multiplication by a positive function on the phase space that may be interpreted as a time reparametrization. We prove that our method is structure preserving in the sense that the discrete flow is interpolated to arbitrary order by the flow of a continuous system possessing the same structure. In particular, our discretization preserves a smooth measure on the phase space to arbitrary order. We present applications to a remarkable class of nonholonomic mechanical systems that allow Hamiltonization. To our best knowledge, these results provide the first occurrence in the literature of a measure preserving discretization of measure preserving nonholonomic systems.

The geometry of nonholonomic Chaplygin systems revisited

We consider nonholonomic Chaplygin systems and associate to them a $(1,2)$ tensor field on the shape space, that we term the gyroscopic tensor, and that measures the interplay between the non-integrability of the constraint distribution and the kinetic energy metric. We show how this tensor may be naturally used to derive an almost symplectic description of the reduced dynamics. Moreover, we express sufficient conditions for measure preservation and Hamiltonisation via Chaplygin's reducing multiplier method in terms of the properties of this tensor. The theory is used to give a new proof of the remarkable Hamiltonisation of the multi-dimensional Veselova system obtained by Fedorov and Jovanović in J. Nonlinear Sci. 2004, and Reg. Chaot. Dyn. 2009.

Generalisation of Chaplygin's Reducing Multiplier Theorem with an application to multi-dimensional nonholonomic dynamics

A generalisation of Chaplygin's Reducing Multiplier Theorem is given by providing sufficient conditions for the Hamiltonisation of Chaplygin nonholonomic systems with an arbitrary number $r$ of degrees of freedom via Chaplygin's multiplier method. The crucial point in the construction is to add an hypothesis of geometric nature that controls the interplay between the kinetic energy metric and the non-integrability of the constraint distribution. Such hypothesis can be systematically examined in concrete examples, and is automatically satisfied in the case $r= 2$ encountered in the original formulation of Chaplygin's theorem. Our results are applied to prove the Hamiltonisation of a multi-dimensional generalisation of the problem of a symmetric rigid body with a flat face that rolls without slipping or spinning over a sphere.

Hamiltonisation, measure preservation and first integrals of the multi-dimensional rubber Routh sphere

We consider the multi-dimensional generalisation of the problem of a sphere, with axi-symmetric mass distribution, that rolls without slipping or spinning over a plane. Using recent results from García-Naranjo (arXiv: 1805:06393) and García-Naranjo and Marrero (arXiv: 1812.01422), we show that the reduced equations of motion possess an invariant measure and may be represented in Hamiltonian form by Chaplygin's reducing multiplier method. We also prove a general result on the existence of first integrals for certain Hamiltonisable Chaplygin systems with internal symmetries that is used to determine conserved quantities of the problem.

Integrability and dynamics of the n-dimensional symmetric Veselova top

We consider the the n-dimensional generalisation of the nonholonomic Veselova problem. We derive the reduced equations of motion in terms of the mass tensor of the body and determine some general properties of the dynamics. In particular we give a closed formula for the invariant measure, we indicate the existence of steady rotation solutions, and obtain some results on their stability. We then focus our attention on bodies whose mass tensor has a specific type of symmetry. We show that the phase space is foliated by invariant tori that carry quasi-periodic dynamics in the natural time variable. Our results enlarge the known cases of integrability of the multi-dimensional Veselova top. Moreover, they show that in some previously known instances of integrability, the flow is quasi-periodic without the need of a time reparametrisation.

Moving energies as first integrals of nonholonomic systems with affine constraints

In nonholonomic mechanical systems with constraints that are affine (linear nonhomogeneous) functions of the velocities, the energy is typically not a first integral. It was shown in [Fassò and Sansonetto, JNLS, 26, (2016)] that, nevertheless, there exist modifications of the energy, called there moving energies, which under suitable conditions are first integrals. The first goal of this paper is to study the properties of these functions and the conditions that lead to their conservation. In particular, we enlarge the class of moving energies considered in [Fassò and Sansonetto, JNLS, 26, (2016)]. The second goal of the paper is to demonstrate the relevance of moving energies in nonholonomic mechanics. We show that certain first integrals of some well known systems (the affine Veselova and LR systems), which had been detected on a case-by-case way, are instances of moving energies. Moreover, we determine conserved moving energies for a class of affine systems on Lie groups that include the LR systems, for a heavy convex rigid body that rolls without slipping on a uniformly rotating plane, and for an $n$-dimensional generalization of the Chaplygin sphere problem to a uniformly rotating hyperplane.

A shortcut to the Kovalevskaya curve

We present a systematic way of derivation of the algebraic curves of separation of variables for the classical Kovalevskaya top and its generalizations, starting from the spectral curve of the corresponding Lax representation found by Reyman and Semonov-Tian-Shansky. In particular, we show how the known Kovalevskaya curve of separation can be obtained, by a simple one-step transformation, from the spectral curve. The algorithm works for the general constants of motion of the system and is based on W. Barth's description of Prym varieties via pencils of genus 3 curves. It also allows us to derive new curves of separation of variables in various generalizations of this system.

Quasi-periodicity in relative quasi-periodic tori

At variance from the cases of relative equilibria and relative periodic orbits of dynamical systems with symmetry, the dynamics in relative quasi-periodic tori (namely, subsets of the phase space that project to an invariant torus of the reduced system on which the flow is quasi-periodic) is not yet completely understood. Even in the simplest situation of a free action of a compact and abelian connected group, the dynamics in a relative quasi-periodic torus is not necessarily quasi-periodic. It is known that quasi-periodicity of the unreduced dynamics is related to the reducibility of the reconstruction equation, and sufficient conditions for it are virtually known only in a perturbation context. We provide a different, though equivalent, approach to this subject, based on the hypothesis of the existence of commuting, group-invariant lifts of a set of generators of the reduced torus. Under this hypothesis, which is shown to be equivalent to the reducibility of the reconstruction equation, we give a complete description of the structure of the relative quasi-periodic torus, which is a principal torus bundle whose fibers are tori of a dimension which exceeds that of the reduced torus by at most the rank of the group. The construction can always be done in such a way that these tori have minimal dimension and carry ergodic flow.

The dynamics of an articulated $n$-trailer vehicle

We derive the reduced equations of motion for an articulated $n$-trailer vehicle that moves under its own inertia on the plane. We show that the energy level surfaces in the reduced space are $(n+1)$-tori and we classify the equilibria within them, determining their stability. A thorough description of the dynamics is given in the case $n=1$.

Poisson structures on smooth 4-manifolds

We show that every closed oriented smooth 4-manifold admits a complete singular Poisson structure in each homotopy class of maps to the 2-sphere. The rank of this structure is 2 outside a small singularity set, which consists of finitely many circles and isolated points. The Poisson bivector has rank 0 on the singularities, where we give its local form explicitly.

Unimodularity and preservation of volumes in nonholonomic mechanics

The equations of motion of a mechanical system subjected to nonholonomic linear constraints can be formulated in terms of a linear almost Poisson structure in a vector bundle. We study the existence of invariant measures for the system in terms of the unimodularity of this structure. In the presence of symmetries, our approach allows us to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an invariant volume, that unify and improve results existing in the literature. We present an algorithm to study the existence of a smooth invariant volume for nonholonomic mechanical systems with symmetry and we apply it to several concrete mechanical examples.

The inhomogeneous Suslov problem

We consider the Suslov problem of nonholonomic rigid body motion with inhomogeneous constraints. We show that if the direction along which the Suslov constraint is enforced is perpendicular to a principal axis of inertia of the body, then the reduced equations are integrable and, in the generic case, possess a smooth invariant measure. Interestingly, in this generic case, the first integral that permits integration is transcendental and the density of the invariant measure depends on the angular velocities. We also study the Painlevé property of the solutions.

The motion of the 2D hydrodynamic Chaplygin sleigh in the presence of circulation

We consider the motion of a planar rigid body in a potential flow with circulation and subject to a certain nonholonomic constraint. This model is related to the design of underwater vehicles. The equations of motion admit a reduction to a 2-dimensional nonlinear system, which is integrated explicitly. We show that the reduced system comprises both asymptotic and periodic dynamics separated by a critical value of the energy, and give a complete classification of types of the motion. Then we describe the whole variety of the trajectories of the body on the plane.
