Integrability of the $n$-dimensional axially symmetric Chaplygin sphere

We consider the $n$-dimensional Chaplygin sphere under the assumption that the mass distribution of the sphere is axisymmetric. We prove that for initial conditions whose angular momentum about the contact point is vertical, the dynamics is quasi-periodic. For $n=4$ we perform the reduction by the associated $SO(3)$ symmetry and show that the reduced system is integrable by the Euler-Jacobi theorem.

Gauge momenta as Casimir functions of nonholonomic systems

We consider nonholonomic systems with symmetry possessing a certain type of first integrals that are linear in the velocities. We develop a systematic method for modifying the standard nonholonomic almost Poisson structure that describes the dynamics so that these integrals become Casimir functions after reduction. This explains a number of recent results on Hamiltonization of nonholonomic systems, and has consequences for the study of relative equilibria in such systems.

The geometric discretisation of the Suslov problem: a case study of consistency for nonholonomic integrators

Geometric integrators for nonholonomic systems were introduced by Cortés and Martínez in [Nonholonomic integrators, Nonlinearity, 14, 2001] by proposing a discrete Lagrange-D'Alembert principle. Their approach is based on the definition of a discrete Lagrangian $L_d$ and a discrete constraint space $D_d$. There is no recipe to construct these objects and the performance of the integrator is sensitive to their choice. Cortés and Martínez claim that choosing $L_d$ and $D_d$ in a consistent manner with respect to a finite difference map is necessary to guarantee an approximation of the continuous flow within a desired order of accuracy. Although this statement is given without proof, similar versions of it have appeared recently in the literature. We evaluate the importance of the consistency condition by comparing the performance of two different geometric integrators for the nonholonomic Suslov problem, only one of which corresponds to a consistent choice of $L_d$ and $D_d$. We prove that both integrators produce approximations of the same order, and, moreover, that the non-consistent discretisation outperforms the other in numerical experiments and in terms of energy preservation. Our results indicate that the consistency of a discretisation might not be the most relevant feature to consider in the construction of nonholonomic geometric integrators.

The Hydrodynamic Chaplygin Sleigh

We consider the motion of rigid bodies in a potential fluid subject to certain nonholonomic constraints and show that it is described by Euler--Poincaré--Suslov equations. In the 2-dimensional case, when the constraint is realized by a blade attached to the body, the system provides a hydrodynamic generalization of the Chaplygin sleigh, whose dynamics are studied in detail. Namely, the equations of motion are integrated explicitly and the asymptotic behavior of the system is determined. It is shown how the presence of the fluid brings new features to such a behavior.

Reduction of Almost Poisson brackets and Hamiltonization of the Chaplygin Sphere

We construct different almost Poisson brackets for nonholonomic systems than those existing in the literature and study their reduction. Such brackets are built by considering non-canonical two-forms on the cotangent bundle of configuration space and then carrying out a projection onto the constraint space that encodes the Lagrange-D'Alembert principle. We justify the need for this type of brackets by working out the reduction of the celebrated Chaplygin sphere rolling problem. Our construction provides a geometric explanation of the Hamiltonization of the problem given by A. V. Borisov and I. S. Mamaev.
