Solving Fermat-type equations x^5+y^5=dz^p

In this paper we are interested in solving the Fermat-type equations x^5+y^5=dz^p where d is a positive integer and p a prime number $\ge 7$. We describe a new method based on modularity theorems which allows us to improve all the results in a previous paper of the first author. We finally discuss the present limitations of the method by looking at the case d=3.

Solving Fermat-type equations $x^4 + d y^2 = z^p$ via modular Q-curves over polyquadratic fields

We solve the diophantine equations x^4 + d y^2 = z^p for d=2 and d=3 and any prime p>349 and p>131 respectively. The method consists in generalizing the ideas applied by Frey, Ribet and Wiles in the solution of Fermat's Last Theorem, and by Ellenberg in the solution of the equation x^4 + y^2 = z^p, and we use Q-curves, modular forms and inner twists. In principle our method can be applied to solve this type of equations for other values of d.

The level 1 case of Serre's conjecture revisited

We prove existence of conjugate Galois representations, and we use it to derive a simple method of weight reduction. As a consequence, an alternative proof of the level 1 case of Serre's conjecture follows.

Small primitive roots and malleability of RSA moduli

In a paper of P. Paillier and J. Villar a conjecture is made about the malleability of an RSA modulus. In this paper we present an explicit algorithm refuting the conjecture. Concretely we can factorize an RSA modulus n using very little information on the factorization of a concrete n' coprime to n. However, we believe the conjecture might be true, when imposing some extra conditions on the auxiliary n' allowed to be used. In particular, the paper shows how subtle the notion of malleability is.

How to facet a gemstone: from potential modularity to the proof of Serre's modularity conjecture

In this survey paper we present recent results obtained by Khare, Wintenberger and the author that have led to a proof of Serre's conjecture, such as existence of compatible families, modular upper bounds for universal deformation rings and existence of minimal lifts, prime switching and modularity propagation, weight reduction (via existence of conjugates) and (iterated) killing ramification. The main tools used in the proof of these results are modularity lifting theorems a la Wiles and a result of potential modularity due to R. Taylor.

Uniform behavior of families of Galois representations on Siegel modular forms and the Endoscopy Conjecture

We prove the following uniformity principle: if one of the Galois representations in the family attached to a genus two Siegel cusp form of weight $k>3$, "semistable" and with multiplicity one, is reducible (for an odd prime $p$),then all the representations in the family are reducible. This, combined with Serre's conjecture (which is now a theorem) gives a proof of the Endoscopy Conjecture.

On the level p weight 2 case of Serre's conjecture

This brief note only contains a modest contribution: we just fix some inaccuracies in the proof of the prime level weight 2 case of Serre's conjecture given in Khare's preprint "On Serre's modularity conjecture for 2-dimensional mod p representations of G_Q unramified outside p", for the case of trivial character. More precisely, the modularity lifting result needed at a crucial step is the one for the case of a deformation corresponding to a $p$-adic semistable (in the sense of Fontaine) Galois representation attached to a semistable abelian variety, but in Khare's preprint it is applied a lemma only valid for potentially crystalline representations. The completion is easy: both the modularity lifting result applied in Khare's preprint (the one for the case of an abelian variety with potentially good reduction) and the one we need (the one for an abelian variety with bad semistable reduction) can be found in my paper "Modularity of abelian surfaces with Quaternionic Multiplication" (2002): they follow easily from a combination of modularity liftings results a la Wiles and other arguments.

Elliptic mod \ell Galois representations which are not minimally elliptic

In a recent preprint, F. Calegari has shown that for $\ell = 2, 3, 5$ and 7 there exist 2-dimensional surjective representations $ρ$ of $\Gal(\bar{\Q}/\Q)$ with values in $\F_\ell$ coming from the $\ell$-torsion points of an elliptic curve defined over $\Q$, but not minimally, i.e., so that any elliptic curve giving rise to $ρ$ has prime-to-$\ell$ conductor greater than the (prime-to-$\ell$) conductor of $ρ$. In this brief note, we will show that the same is true for any prime $\ell >7$, concretely, we will show that for any such $\ell$ the elliptic curve $$E^\ell: \qquad Y^2 = X (X- 3^\ell ) (X - 3^\ell - 1) $$ is semistable, has bad reduction at 3, the associated $\mod \ell$ Galois representation $ρ$ is surjective, unramified at 3, and there is no elliptic curve with good reduction at 3 whose associated $\mod \ell$ representation is isomorphic to $ρ$.

Explicit determination of images of Galois representations attached to Hilbert modular forms

In a previous article, the second author proved that the image of the Galois representation mod $λ$ attached to a Hilbert modular newform is large or all but finitely many primes $λ$, if the form is not a theta series. In this brief note, we give an explicit bound for this exceptional finite set of primes and determine the images in three different examples. Our examples are of Hilbert newforms on real quadratic fields, of parallel or non-parallel weight and of different levels.

On abelian surfaces with potential quaternionic multiplication

An abelian surface A over a field K has potential quaternionic multiplication if the ring End_\bar K (A) of geometric endomorphisms of A is an order in an indefinite rational division quaternion algebra. In this brief note, we study the possible structures of the ring of endomorphisms of these surfaces and we provide explicit examples of Jacobians of curves of genus two which show that our result is sharp.

Geometric families of 4-dimensional Galois representations with generically large images

We study compatible families of four-dimensional Galois representations constructed in the étale cohomology of a smooth projective variety. We prove a theorem asserting that the images will be generically large if certain conditions are satisfied. We only consider representations with coefficients in an imaginary quadratic field. We apply our result to an example constructed by Jasper Scholten, obtaining a family of linear groups and one of unitary groups as Galois groups over $\mathbb{Q}$.

From potential modularity to modularity for integral Galois representations and rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds

We prove modularity for any irreducible crystalline $\ell$-adic odd 2-dimensional Galois representation (with finite ramification set) unramified at 3 verifying an "ordinarity at 3" easy to check condition, with Hodge-Tate weights $\{0, w \}$ such that $2 w < \ell$ (and $\ell > 3$) and such that the traces $a_p$ of the images of Frobenii verify $\Q(\{a_p \}) = \Q $. This result applies in particular to any motivic compatible family of odd two-dimensional Galois representations of $\Gal(\bar{\Q}/\Q)$ if the motive has rational coefficients, good reduction at 3, and the "ordinarity at 3" condition is satisfied. As a corollary, this proves that all rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over $\Q$ having good reduction at 3 and satisfying $ 3 \nmid a_3$ are modular.

Existence of non-elliptic mod l Galois representations for every l >5

For $\ell = 3$ and 5 it is known that every odd, irreducible, 2-dimensional representation of $\Gal(\bar{\Q}/\Q)$ with values in $\F_\ell$ and determinant equal to the cyclotomic character must "come from" the $\ell$-torsion points of an elliptic curve defined over $\Q$. We prove, by giving concrete counter-examples, that this result is false for every prime $\ell >5$.

Computing the level of a modular rigid Calabi-Yau threefold

In a previous article (a joint work with J. Manoharmayum) the modularity of a large class of rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds was established. To make that result more explicit, we recall (and re-prove) a result of Serre giving a bound for the conductor of an "integral" 2-dimensional compatible family of Galois representations and apply this result to give an algorithm that determines the level of a modular rigid Calabi-Yau threefold. We apply the algorithm to three examples.
