Growing Extra Dimensions in AdS/CFT

What is the dimension of spacetime? We address this question in the context of the AdS/CFT Correspondence. We give a prescription for computing the number of large bulk dimensions, $D$, from strongly-coupled CFT$_d$ data, where "large" means parametrically of order the AdS scale. The idea is that unitarity of 1-loop AdS amplitudes, dual to non-planar CFT correlators, fixes $D$ in terms of tree-level data. We make this observation rigorous by deriving a positive-definite sum rule for the 1-loop double-discontinuity in the flat space/bulk-point limit. This enables us to prove an array of AdS/CFT folklore, and to infer new properties of large $N$ CFTs at strong coupling that ensure consistency of emergent large extra dimensions with string/M-theory. We discover an OPE universality at the string scale: to leading order in large $N$, heavy-heavy-light three-point functions, with heavy operators that are parametrically lighter than a power of $N$, are linear in the heavy conformal dimension. We explore its consequences for supersymmetric CFTs and explain how emergent large extra dimensions relate to a Sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture for CFTs. Lastly, we conjecture, building on a claim of arXiv:0908.0756, that any CFT with large higher-spin gap and no global symmetries has a holographic hierarchy: $D=d+1$

Genus-One String Amplitudes from Conformal Field Theory

We explore and exploit the relation between non-planar correlators in ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills, and higher-genus closed string amplitudes in type IIB string theory. By conformal field theory techniques we construct the genus-one, four-point string amplitude in AdS$_5\times S^5$ in the low-energy expansion, dual to an ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills correlator in the 't Hooft limit at order $1/c^2$ in a strong coupling expansion. In the flat space limit, this maps onto the genus-one, four-point scattering amplitude for type II closed strings in ten dimensions. Using this approach we reproduce several results obtained via string perturbation theory. We also demonstrate a novel mechanism to fix subleading terms in the flat space limit of AdS amplitudes by using string/M-theory.

On Genus-one String Amplitudes on $AdS_5 \times S^5$

We study non-planar correlators in ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills in Mellin space. We focus in the stress tensor four-point correlator to order $1/N^4$ and in a strong coupling expansion. This can be regarded as the genus-one four-point graviton amplitude of type IIB string theory on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ in a low energy expansion. Both the loop supergravity result as well as the tower of stringy corrections have a remarkable simple structure in Mellin space, making manifest important properties such as the correct flat space limit and the structure of UV divergences.

The Analytic Bootstrap for Large $N$ Chern-Simons Vector Models

Three-dimensional Chern-Simons vector models display an approximate higher spin symmetry in the large $N$ limit. Their single-trace operators consist of a tower of weakly broken currents, as well as a scalar $σ$ of approximate twist $1$ or $2$. We study the consequences of crossing symmetry for the four-point correlator of $σ$ in a $1/N$ expansion, using analytic bootstrap techniques. To order $1/N$ we show that crossing symmetry fixes the contribution from the tower of currents, providing an alternative derivation of well-known results by Maldacena and Zhiboedov. When $σ$ has twist $1$ its OPE receives a contribution from the exchange of $σ$ itself with an arbitrary coefficient, due to the existence of a marginal sextic coupling. We develop the machinery to determine the corrections to the OPE data of double-trace operators due to this, and to similar exchanges. This in turns allows us to fix completely the correlator up to three known truncated solutions to crossing. We then proceed to study the problem to order $1/N^2$. We find that crossing implies the appearance of odd-twist double-trace operators, and calculate their OPE coefficients in a large spin expansion. Also, surprisingly, crossing at order $1/N^2$, implies non-trivial $O(1/N)$ anomalous dimensions for even-twist double-trace operators, even though such contributions do not appear in the four-point function at order $1/N$ (in the case where there is no scalar exchange). We argue that this phenomenon arises due to operator mixing. Finally, we analyse the bosonic vector model with a sextic coupling without gauge interactions, and determine the order $1/N^2$ corrections to the dimensions of twist-$2$ double-trace operators.

Holographic Reconstruction of AdS Exchanges from Crossing Symmetry

Motivated by AdS/CFT, we address the following outstanding question in large $N$ conformal field theory: given the appearance of a single-trace operator in the ${\cal O}\times{\cal O}$ OPE of a scalar primary ${\cal O}$, what is its total contribution to the vacuum four-point function $\langle {\cal O}{\cal O}{\cal O}{\cal O}\rangle$ as dictated by crossing symmetry? We solve this problem in 4d conformal field theories at leading order in $1/N$. Viewed holographically, this provides a field theory reconstruction of crossing-symmetric, four-point exchange amplitudes in AdS$_5$. Our solution takes the form of a resummation of the large spin solution to the crossing equations, supplemented by corrections at finite spin, required by crossing. The method can be applied to the exchange of operators of arbitrary twist $τ$ and spin $s$, although it vastly simplifies for even-integer twist, where we give explicit results. The output is the set of OPE data for the exchange of all double-trace operators $[{\cal O}{\cal O}]_{n,\ell}$. We find that the double-trace anomalous dimensions $γ_{n,\ell}$ are negative, monotonic and convex functions of $\ell$, for all $n$ and all $\ell>s$. This constitutes a holographic signature of bulk causality and classical dynamics of even-spin fields. We also find that the "derivative relation" between double-trace anomalous dimensions and OPE coefficients does not hold in general, and derive the explicit form of the deviation in several cases. Finally, we study large $n$ limits of $γ_{n,\ell}$, relevant for the Regge and bulk-point regimes.

Taming the $ε$-expansion with Large Spin Perturbation Theory

We apply analytic bootstrap techniques to the four-point correlator of fundamental fields in the Wilson-Fisher model. In an $ε$-expansion crossing symmetry fixes the double discontinuity of the correlator in terms of CFT data at lower orders. Large spin perturbation theory, or equivalently the recently proposed Froissart-Gribov inversion integral, then allows one to reconstruct the CFT data of intermediate operators of any spin. We use this method to compute the anomalous dimensions and OPE coefficients of leading twist operators. To cubic order in $ε$ the double discontinuity arises solely from the identity operator and the scalar bilinear operator, making the computation straightforward. At higher orders the double discontinuity receives contributions from infinite towers of higher spin operators. At fourth order, the structure of perturbation theory leads to a proposal in terms of functions of certain degree of transcendentality, which can then be fixed by symmetries. This leads to the full determination of the CFT data for leading twist operators to fourth order.

Gravitational S-matrix from CFT dispersion relations

We analyse the double-discontinuities of the four-point correlator of the stress-tensor multiplet in N=4 SYM at large t' Hooft coupling and at order $1/N^4$, as a way to access one-loop effects in the dual supergravity theory. From these singularities we extract CFT-data by using two inversion procedures: one based on a recently proposed Froissart-Gribov inversion integral, and the other based on large spin perturbation theory. Both procedures lead to the same results and are shown to be equivalent more generally. Our computation parallels the standard S-matrix reconstruction via dispersion relations. In a suitable limit, the result of the conformal field theory calculation is compared with the one-loop graviton scattering amplitude in ten-dimensional IIB supergravity in flat space, finding perfect agreement.

Solving CFTs with Weakly Broken Higher Spin Symmetry

The method of large spin perturbation theory allows to analyse conformal field theories (CFT) by turning the crossing equations into an algebraic problem. We apply this method to a generic CFT with weakly broken higher spin (HS) symmetry, to the first non-trivial order in the breaking parameter. We show that the spectrum of broken currents, for any value of the spin, follows from crossing symmetry. After discussing a generic model of a single scalar field, we focus on vector models with $O(N)$ global symmetry. We rediscover the spectrum of several models, including the $O(N)$ Wilson-Fisher model around four dimensions, the large $O(N)$ model in $2<d<4$ and cubic models around six dimensions, not necessarily unitary. We also discuss models where the fundamental field is not part of the spectrum. Examples of this are weakly coupled gauge theories and our method gives an on-shell gauge invariant way to study them. At first order in the coupling constant we show that again the spectrum follows from crossing symmetry, to all values of the spin. Our method provides an alternative to usual perturbation theory without any reference to a Lagrangian.

Loop Corrections to Supergravity on $AdS_5 \times S^5$

We consider the four-point correlator of the stress-energy tensor multiplet in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. In the planar limit and at large 't Hooft coupling such correlator is given by the corresponding holographic correlation function in IIB supergravity on $AdS_5 \times S^5$. We consider subleading corrections in the number of colours, i.e. order $1/N^4$, at large 't Hooft coupling. This corresponds to loop corrections to the supergravity result. Consistency conditions, most notably crossing symmetry, constrain the form of such corrections and lead to a complete determination of the spectrum of leading twist intermediate operators.

On instanton effects in the operator product expansion

We revisit the computation of instanton effects to various correlation functions in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and clarify a controversy existing in the literature regarding their consistency with the OPE and conformal symmetry. To check these properties, we examine the conformal partial wave decomposition of four-point correlators involving combinations of half-BPS and Konishi operators and isolate the contribution from the conformal primary scalar operators of twist four. We demonstrate that the leading instanton correction to this contribution is indeed consistent with conformal symmetry and compute the corresponding corrections to the OPE coefficients and the scaling dimensions of such twist-four operators. Our analysis justifies the regularization procedure used to compute ultraviolet divergent instanton contribution to correlation functions involving unprotected operators.

Instanton corrections to twist-two operators

We present the calculation of the leading instanton contribution to the scaling dimensions of twist-two operators with arbitrary spin and to their structure constants in the OPE of two half-BPS operators in $\mathcal N=4$ SYM. For spin-two operators we verify that, in agreement with $\mathcal N=4$ superconformal Ward identities, the obtained expressions coincide with those for the Konishi operator. For operators with high spin we find that the leading instanton correction vanishes. This arises as the result of a rather involved calculation and requires a better understanding.

Large Spin Perturbation Theory

We consider conformal field theories around points of large twist degeneracy. Examples of this are theories with weakly broken higher spin symmetry and perturbations around generalised free fields. At the degenerate point we introduce twist conformal blocks. These are eigenfunctions of certain quartic operators and encode the contribution, to a given four-point correlator, of the whole tower of intermediate operators with a given twist. As we perturb around the degenerate point, the twist degeneracy is lifted. In many situations this breaking is controlled by inverse powers of the spin. In such cases the twist conformal blocks can be decomposed into a sequence of functions which we systematically construct. Decomposing the four-point correlator in this basis turns crossing symmetry into an algebraic problem. Our method can be applied to a wide spectrum of conformal field theories in any number of dimensions and at any order in the breaking parameter. As an example, we compute the spectrum of various theories around generalised free fields. For theories with higher spin symmetry we discuss the relation between twist conformal blocks and higher spin conformal blocks.

Revisiting instanton corrections to the Konishi multiplet

We revisit the calculation of instanton effects in correlation functions in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM involving the Konishi operator and operators of twist two. Previous studies revealed that the scaling dimensions and the OPE coefficients of these operators do not receive instanton corrections in the semiclassical approximation. We go beyond this approximation and demonstrate that, while operators belonging to the same ${\cal N}=4$ supermultiplet ought to have the same conformal data, the evaluation of quantum instanton corrections for one operator can be mapped into a semiclassical computation for another operator in the same supermultiplet. This observation allows us to compute explicitly the leading instanton correction to the scaling dimension of operators in the Konishi supermultiplet as well as to their structure constants in the OPE of two half-BPS scalar operators. We then use these results, together with crossing symmetry, to determine instanton corrections to scaling dimensions of twist-four operators with large spin.

Unitarity and positivity constraints for CFT at large central charge

We consider the four-point correlator of the stress tensor multiplet in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM in the limit of large central charge $c \sim N^2$. For finite values of $g^2N$ single-trace intermediate operators arise at order $1/c$ and this leads to specific poles in the Mellin representation of the correlator. The sign of the residue at these poles is fixed by unitarity. We consider solutions consistent with crossing symmetry and this pole structure. We show that in a certain regime all solutions result in a negative contribution to the anomalous dimension of twist four operators. The reason behind this is a positivity property of Mack polynomials that leads to a positivity condition for the Mellin amplitude. This positivity condition can also be proven by assuming the correct Regge behaviour for the Mellin amplitude. For large $g^2N$ we recover a tower of solutions in one to one correspondence with local interactions in a effective field theory in the $AdS$ bulk, with the appropriate suppression factors, and with definite overall signs. These signs agree with the signs that would follow from causality constraints on the effective field theory. The positivity constraints arising from CFT for the Mellin amplitude take a very similar form to the causality constraint for the forward limit of the S-matrix.

Crossing symmetry and Higher spin towers

We consider higher spin operators in weakly coupled gauge conformal field theories. Crossing symmetry of mixed scalar correlators relates different higher spin towers and we study the consequences for the spectrum and structure constants of higher spin operators of different twists. Constraints are obtained to all loops in perturbation theory. The large spin contributions to the structure constants can be resummed into a theory-dependent prefactor times a universal factor, whose structure of poles agrees with the one that would be obtained from a Witten diagram supergravity computation, although only crossing symmetry is assumed. Finally, our results provide an all loop expression for the double null limit of mixed correlators, which is in perfect agreement with the correlator/Wilson loop correspondence.

Supersymmetric solutions to Euclidean Romans supergravity

We study Euclidean Romans supergravity in six dimensions with a non-trivial Abelian R-symmetry gauge field. We show that supersymmetric solutions are in one-to-one correspondence with solutions to a set of differential constraints on an SU(2) structure. As an application of our results we (i) show that this structure reduces at a conformal boundary to the five-dimensional rigid supersymmetric geometry previously studied by the authors, (ii) find a general expression for the holographic dual of the VEV of a BPS Wilson loop, matching an exact field theory computation, (iii) construct holographic duals to squashed Sasaki-Einstein backgrounds, again matching to a field theory computation, and (iv) find new analytic solutions.

Large spin systematics in CFT

Using conformal field theory (CFT) arguments we derive an infinite number of constraints on the large spin expansion of the anomalous dimensions and structure constants of higher spin operators. These arguments rely only on analiticity, unitarity, crossing-symmetry and the structure of the conformal partial wave expansion. We obtain results for both, perturbative CFT to all order in the perturbation parameter, as well as non-perturbatively. For the case of conformal gauge theories this provides a proof of the reciprocity principle to all orders in perturbation theory and provides a new "reciprocity" principle for structure constants. We argue that these results extend also to non-conformal theories.

An Algebraic Approach to the Analytic Bootstrap

We develop an algebraic approach to the analytic bootstrap in CFTs. By acting with the Casimir operator on the crossing equation we map the problem of doing large spin sums to any desired order to the problem of solving a set of recursion relations. We compute corrections to the anomalous dimension of large spin operators due to the exchange of a primary and its descendants in the crossed channel and show that this leads to a Borel-summable expansion. We analyse higher order corrections to the microscopic CFT data in the direct channel and its matching to infinite towers of operators in the crossed channel. We apply this method to the critical $O(N)$ model. At large $N$ we reproduce the first few terms in the large spin expansion of the known two-loop anomalous dimensions of higher spin currents in the traceless symmetric representation of $O(N)$ and make further predictions. At small $N$ we present the results for the truncated large spin expansion series of anomalous dimensions of higher spin currents.
