Incompressible planar surfaces in hyperbolic link exteriors in the 3-sphere

For each integer $N\geq 3$ we construct examples of $N$-component hyperbolic links $L\subset\mathbb{S}^3$ whose exterior contains an incompressible spanning planar surface $P\subset X_L$ with one boundary component on each boundary torus of $X_L$ of nonmeridional and nonintegral slope, thus providing counterexamples to a recent conjecture of M. Eudave-Muñoz and M. Ozawa. The case $N=3$ is the crucial one to consider: all such link pairs $(L,P)$ are classified and found to be generated by the structure of the exterior of hyperbolic Eudave-Muñoz knots. More generally, necessary and sufficient conditions on integers $p_1,p_2,p_3\geq 2$ are given for the existence of a 3-component link in $\mathbb{S}^3$ whose exterior contains a spanning pants with boundary slopes of the form $a_i/p_i$. A key role in the analysis of 3-component link pairs is played by the properties of the embeddings of three mutually disjoint and nonparallel primitive circles on the boundary of a genus two handlebody. These are classified in general and in the special case when the handlebody is part of a genus two Heegaard decomposition of $\mathbb{S}^3$ associated with a 3-component link pair. The hyperbolic links with $N\geq 4$ components whose exterior contains a spanning planar surface with nonmeridional and nonintegral boundary slopes are constructed via an inductive process that starts with any of the classified 3-component hyperbolic link pairs.

The Kakimizu complex for genus one hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere

The Kakimizu complex $MS(K)$ for a knot $K\subset\mathbb{S}^3$ is the simplicial complex with vertices the isotopy classes of minimal genus Seifert surfaces in the exterior of $K$ and simplices any set of vertices with mutually disjoint representative surfaces. In this paper we determine the structure of the Kakimizu complex $MS(K)$ of genus one hyperbolic knots $K\subset\mathbb{S}^3$. In contrast with the case of hyperbolic knots of higher genus, it is known that the dimension $d$ of $MS(K)$ is universally bounded by $4$, and we show that $MS(K)$ consists of a single $d$-simplex for $d=0,4$ and otherwise of at most two $d$-simplices which intersect in a common $(d-1)$-face. For the cases $1\leq d\leq 3$ we also construct infinitely many examples of such knots where $MS(K)$ consists of two $d$-simplices.

Crosscap number two knots in $S^3$ with (1,1) decompositions

M. Scharlemann has recently proved that any genus one tunnel number one knot is either a satellite or 2-bridge knot, as conjectured by H. Goda and M. Teragaito; all such knots admit a (1,1) decomposition. In this paper we give a classification of the family of (1,1) knots in $S^3$ with crosscap number two (i.e., bounding an essential once-punctured Klein bottle).
