Quantum field theory and classical optics: determining the fine structure constant

The properties of the vacuum are described by quantum physics including the response to external fields such as electromagnetic radiation. Of the two parameters that govern the details of the electromagnetic field dynamics in vacuum, one is fixed by the requirement of Lorentz invariance $c= 1/\sqrt{\varepsilon_{0} μ_{0}}$. The other one, $Z_{0}= \sqrt{μ_{0}/\varepsilon_{0}} = 1/(c\varepsilon_{0})$ and its relation to the quantum vacuum, is discussed in this contribution. Deriving $\varepsilon_{0}$ from the properties of the quantum vacuum implies the derivation of the fine structure constant.

The many facets of the Fabry-Perot

We address the response, both in amplitude and intensity, of a Fabry-Perot from a variety of viewpoints. These complementary pictures conspire to achieve a comprehensive and consistent theory of the operation of this system.

Achieving quantum-limited optical resolution

We establish a simple method to assess the quantum Fisher information required for resolving two incoherent point sources with an imaging system. The resulting Cramér-Rao bound shows that the standard Rayleigh limit can be surpassed by suitable coherent measurements. We explicitly find these optimal strategies and present a realization for Gaussian and slit apertures. This involves a projection onto the optimal bases that is accomplished with digital holographic techniques and is compared with a CCD position measurement. Our experimental results unequivocally confirm unprecedented sub-Rayleigh precision.

Amplitude response of a Fabry-Perot interferometer

The complex reflected and transmitted amplitudes from a Fabry-Perot interferometer are analyzed using a phase-space approach, in which the real and imaginary parts of those amplitudes are taken as basic variables. As functions of the optical path length of the cavity, the reflected amplitude describes a circle, whereas the transmitted is given by a hippopede. The system performance can be directly related to the geometrical parameters of these curves.

Invisibility and PT Symmetry: A Simple Geometrical Viewpoint

We give a simplified account of the properties of the transfer matrix for a complex one-dimensional potential, paying special attention to the particular instance of unidirectional invisibility. In appropriate variables, invisible potentials appear as performing null rotations, which lead to the helicity-gauge symmetry of massless particles. In hyperbolic geometry, this can be interpreted, via Möbius transformations, as parallel displacements, a geometric action that has no Euclidean analogy.

Structure of the sets of mutually unbiased bases with cyclic symmetry

Mutually unbiased bases that can be cyclically generated by a single unitary operator are of special interest, since they can be readily implemented in practice. We show that, for a system of qubits, finding such a generator can be cast as the problem of finding a symmetric matrix over the field $\mathbb{F}_2$ equipped with an irreducible characteristic polynomial of a given Fibonacci index. The entanglement structure of the resulting complete sets is determined by two additive matrices of the same size.

A sum rule for charged elementary particles

There may be a link between the quantum properties of the vacuum and the parameters describing the properties of light propagation, culminating in a sum over all types of elementary particles existing in Nature weighted only by their squared charges and independent of their masses. The estimate for that sum is of the order of 100.

Variations on the adiabatic invariance: the Lorentz pendulum

We analyze a very simple variant of the Lorentz pendulum, in which the length is varied exponentially, instead of uniformly, as it is assumed in the standard case. We establish quantitative criteria for the condition of adiabatic changes in both pendula and put in evidence their substantially different physical behavior with regard to adiabatic invariance.

Quantum polarization characterization and tomography

We present a complete polarization characterization of any quantum state of two orthogonal polarization modes, and give a systematic measurement procedure to collect the necessary data. Full characterization requires measurements of the photon number in both modes and linear optics. In the situation where only the photon-number difference can be determined, a limited but useful characterization is obtained. The characteristic Stokes moment profiles are given for several common quantum states.

Mutually unbiased bases and discrete Wigner functions

Mutually unbiased bases and discrete Wigner functions are closely, but not uniquely related. Such a connection becomes more interesting when the Hilbert space has a dimension that is a power of a prime $N=d^n$, which describes a composite system of $n$ qudits. Hence, entanglement naturally enters the picture. Although our results are general, we concentrate on the simplest nontrivial example of dimension $N=8=2^3$. It is shown that the number of fundamentally different Wigner functions is severely limited if one simultaneously imposes translational covariance and that the generating operators consist of rotations around two orthogonal axes, acting on the individual qubits only.

Characterizing the reflectance near the Brewster angle: a Pade-approximant approach

We characterize the reflectance peak near the Brewster angle for both an interface between two dielectric media and a single slab. To approach this problem analytically, we approximate the reflectance by a first-order diagonal Padé. In this way, we calculate the width and the skewness of the peak and we show that, although they present a well-resolved maximum, they are otherwise not so markedly dependent on the refractive index.

Inequivalent classes of closed three-level systems

We show here that the $Λ$ and V configurations of three-level atomic systems, while they have recently been shown to be equivalent for many important physical quantities when driven with classical fields [M. B. Plenio, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{62}, 015802 (2000)], are no longer equivalent when coupled via a quantum field. We analyze the physical origin of such behavior and show how the equivalence between these two configurations emerges in the semiclassical limit.

General unit-disk representation for periodic multilayers

We suggest a geometrical framework to discuss periodic layered structures in the unit disk. The band gaps appear when the point representing the system approaches the unit circle. We show that the trace of the matrix describing the basic period allows for a classification in three families of orbits with quite different properties. The laws of convergence of the iterates to the unit circle can be then considered as universal features of the reflection.

Two-photon imaging and quantum holography

It has been claimed that ``the use of entangled photons in an imaging system can exhibit effects that cannot be mimicked by any other two-photon source, whatever strength of the correlations between the two photons'' [A. F. Abouraddy, B. E. A. Saleh, A. V. Sergienko, and M. C. Teich, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 123602 (2001)]. While we believe that the cited statement is true, we show that the method proposed in that paper, with ``bucket detection'' of one of the photons, will give identical results for entangled states as for appropriately prepared classically correlated states.

A description of entanglement in terms of quantum phase

We explore the role played by the phase in an accurate description of the entanglement of bipartite systems. We first present an appropriate polar decomposition that leads to a truly Hermitian operator for the phase of a single qubit. We also examine the positive operator-valued measures that can describe the qubit phase properties. When dealing with two qubits, the relative phase seems to be a natural variable to understand entanglement. In this spirit, we propose a measure of entanglement based on this variable.

Entangled-State Lithography: Tailoring any Pattern with a Single State

We demonstrate a systematic approach to Heisenberg-limited lithographic image formation using four-mode reciprocal binominal states. By controlling the exposure pattern with a simple bank of birefringent plates, any pixel pattern on a $(N+1) \times (N+1)$ grid, occupying a square with the side half a wavelength long, can be generated from a $2 N$-photon state.
