Spectral instability of small-amplitude periodic waves of the electronic Euler-Poisson system

The present work shows that essentially all small-amplitude periodic traveling waves of the electronic Euler-Poisson system are spectrally unstable. This instability is neither modulational nor co-periodic, and thus requires an unusual spectral analysis and, beyond specific computations, newly devised arguments. The growth rate with respect to the amplitude of the background waves is also provided when the instability occurs.

Stability and instability in scalar balance laws: fronts and periodic waves

We complete a full classification of non-degenerate traveling waves of scalar balance laws from the point of view of spectral and nonlinear stability/instability under (piecewise) smooth perturbations. A striking feature of our analysis is the elucidation of the prominent role of characteristic points in the determination of both the spectra of the linearized operators and the phase dynamics involved in the nonlinear large-time evolution. For a generic class of equations an upshot of our analysis is a dramatic reduction from a tremendously wide variety of entropic traveling waves to a relatively small range of stable entropic traveling waves.

Large-time asymptotic stability of Riemann shocks of scalar balance laws

We prove the large-time asymptotic orbital stability of strictly entropic Riemann shock solutions of first order scalar hyperbolic balance laws, under piecewise regular perturbations provided that the source term is dissipative about endstates of the shock. Moreover the convergence towards a shifted reference state is exponential with a rate predicted by the linearized equations about constant endstates.

Convergence Analysis of Asymptotic Preserving Schemes for Strongly Magnetized plasmas

The present paper is devoted to the convergence analysis of a class of asymptotic preserving particle schemes [Filbet \& Rodrigues, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 54 (2) (2016)] for the Vlasov equation with a strong external magnetic field. In this regime, classical Particle-In-Cell (PIC) methods are subject to quite restrictive stability constraints on the time and space steps, due to the small Larmor radius and plasma frequency. The asymptotic preserving discretization that we are going to study removes such a constraint while capturing the large-scale dynamics, even when the discretization (in time and space) is too coarse to capture fastest scales. Our error bounds are explicit regarding the discretization, stiffness parameter, initial data and time.

Asymptotics of the three dimensional Vlasov equation in the large magnetic field limit

We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Vlasov equation in the presence of a strong external magnetic field. In particular we provide a mathematically rigorous derivation of the guiding-center approximation in the general three dimensional setting under the action of large inhomogeneous magnetic fields. First order corrections are computed and justified as well, including electric cross field, magnetic gradient and magnetic curvature drifts. We also treat long time behaviors on two specific examples, the two dimensional case in carte-sian coordinates and a poloidal axi-symmetric geometry, the former for expository purposes. Algebraic manipulations that underlie concrete computations make the most of the linearity of the stiffest part of the system of characteristics instead of relying on any particular variational structure.

Anisotropic Boltzmann-Gibbs dynamics of strongly magnetized Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations

We consider various sets of Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations modeling the dynamics of charged particles in a plasma under the effect of a strong magnetic field. For each of them in a regime where the strength of the magnetic field is effectively stronger than that of collisions we first formally derive asymptotically reduced models. In this regime, strong anisotropic phenomena occur; while equilibrium along magnetic field lines is asymptotically reached our asymptotic models capture a non trivial dynamics in the perpendicular directions. We do check that in any case the obtained asymptotic model defines a well-posed dynamical system and when self consistent electric fields are neglected we provide a rigorous mathematical justification of the formally derived systems. In this last step we provide a complete control on solutions by developing anisotropic hypocoercive estimates.

Large-time behavior of solutions to Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equations: from evanescent collisions to diffusive limit

The present contribution investigates the dynamics generated by the two-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation for charged particles in a steady inhomogeneous background of opposite charges. We provide global in time estimates that are uniform with respect to initial data taken in a bounded set of a weighted $L^2$ space, and where dependencies on the mean-free path $τ$ and the Debye length $δ$ are made explicit. In our analysis the mean free path covers the full range of possible values: from the regime of evanescent collisions $τ\to\infty$ to the strongly collisional regime $τ\to0$. As a counterpart, the largeness of the Debye length, that enforces a weakly nonlinear regime, is used to close our nonlinear estimates. Accordingly we pay a special attention to relax as much as possible the $τ$-dependent constraint on $δ$ ensuring exponential decay with explicit $τ$-dependent rates towards the stationary solution. In the strongly collisional limit $τ\to0$, we also examine all possible asymptotic regimes selected by a choice of observation time scale. Here also, our emphasis is on strong convergence, uniformity with respect to time and to initial data in bounded sets of a $L^2$ space. Our proofs rely on a detailed study of the nonlinear elliptic equation defining stationary solutions and a careful tracking and optimization of parameter dependencies of hypocoercive/hypoelliptic estimates.

Invariant Measures for a Stochastic Fokker-Planck Equation

We study the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation perturbed by a stochastic Vlasov force term. When the noise intensity is not too large, we solve the Cauchy Problem in a class of well-localized (in velocity) functions. We also show that, when the noise intensity is sufficiently small, the system with prescribed mass admits a unique invariant measure which is exponentially mixing. The proof uses hypocoercive decay estimates and hypoelliptic gains of regularity. At last we also exhibit an explicit example showing that some restriction on the noise intensity is indeed required.

Asymptotically stable particle-in-cell methods for the Vlasov-Poisson system with a strong external magnetic field

This paper deals with the numerical resolution of the Vlasov-Poissonsystem with a strong external magnetic field by Particle-In-Cell(PIC) methods. In this regime, classical PIC methods are subject tostability constraints on the time and space steps related to the smallLarmor radius and plasma frequency. Here, we propose anasymptotic-preserving PIC scheme which is not subjected to theselimitations. Our approach is based on first and higher order semi-implicit numericalschemes already validated on dissipative systems. Additionally, when the magnitude of the external magneticfield becomes large, this method provides a consistent PICdiscretization of the guiding-center equation, that is, incompressibleEuler equation in vorticity form. We propose several numerical experiments which provide a solid validation of the method and its underlying concepts.

Spectral validation of the whitham equations for periodic waves of lattice dynamical systems

In the present contribution we investigate some features of dynamical lattice systems near periodic traveling waves. First, following the formal averaging method of Whitham, we derive modulation systems expected to drive at main order the time evolution of slowly modulated wavetrains. Then, for waves whose period is commensurable to the lattice, we prove that the formally-derived first-order averaged system must be at least weakly hyperbolic if the background waves are to be spectrally stable, and, when weak hyperbolicity is met, the characteristic velocities of the modulation system provide group velocities of the original system. Historically, for dynamical evolutions obeying partial differential equations, this has been proved, according to increasing level of algebraic complexity, first for systems of reaction-diffusion type, then for generic systems of balance laws, at last for Hamiltonian systems. Here, for their semi-discrete counterparts, we give at once simultaneous proofs for all these cases. Our main analytical tool is the discrete Bloch transform, a discrete analogous to the continuous Bloch transform. Nevertheless , we needed to overcome the absence of genuine space-translation invariance, a key ingredient of continuous analyses.

Periodic-coefficient damping estimates, and stability of large-amplitude roll waves in inclined thin film flow

A technical obstruction preventing the conclusion of nonlinear stability of large-Froude number roll waves of the St. Venant equations for inclined thin film flow is the "slope condition" of Johnson-Noble-Zumbrun, used to obtain pointwise symmetrizability of the linearized equations and thereby high-frequency resolvent bounds and a crucial H s nonlinear damping estimate. Numerically, this condition is seen to hold for Froude numbers 2 \textless{} F 3.5, but to fail for 3.5 F. As hydraulic engineering applications typically involve Froude number 3 F 5, this issue is indeed relevant to practical considerations. Here, we show that the pointwise slope condition can be replaced by an averaged version which holds always, thereby completing the nonlinear theory in the large-F case. The analysis has potentially larger interest as an extension to the periodic case of a type of weighted "Kawashima-type" damping estimate introduced in the asymptotically-constant coefficient case for the study of stability of large-amplitude viscous shock waves.

Stability of periodic waves in Hamiltonian PDEs

Partial differential equations endowed with a Hamiltonian structure, like the Korteweg--de Vries equation and many other more or less classical models, are known to admit rich families of periodic travelling waves. The stability theory for these waves is still in its infancy though. The issue has been tackled by various means. Of course, it is always possible to address stability from the spectral point of view. However, the link with nonlinear stability -in fact, \emph{orbital} stability, since we are dealing with space-invariant problems-, is far from being straightforward when the best spectral stability we can expect is a \emph{neutral} one. Indeed, because of the Hamiltonian structure, the spectrum of the linearized equations cannot be bounded away from the imaginary axis, even if we manage to deal with the point zero, which is always present because of space invariance. Some other means make a crucial use of the underlying structure. This is clearly the case for the variational approach, which basically uses the Hamiltonian -or more precisely, a constrained functional associated with the Hamiltonian and with other conserved quantities- as a Lyapunov function. When it works, it is very powerful, since it gives a straight path to orbital stability. An alternative is the modulational approach, following the ideas developed by Whitham almost fifty years ago. The main purpose here is to point out a few results, for KdV-like equations and systems, that make the connection between these three approaches: spectral, variational, and modulational.

Slow modulations of periodic waves in Hamiltonian PDEs, with application to capillary fluids

Since its elaboration by Whitham, almost fifty years ago, modulation theory has been known to be closely related to the stability of periodic traveling waves. However, it is only recently that this relationship has been elucidated, and that fully nonlinear results have been obtained. These only concern dissipative systems though: reaction-diffusion systems were first considered by Doelman, Sandstede, Scheel, and Schneider [Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 2009], and viscous systems of conservation laws have been addressed by Johnson, Noble, Rodrigues, and Zumbrun [preprint 2012]. Here, only nondissipative models are considered, and a most basic question is investigated, namely the expected link between the hyperbolicity of modulated equations and the spectral stability of periodic traveling waves to sideband perturbations. This is done first in an abstract Hamiltonian framework, which encompasses a number of dispersive models, in particular the well-known (generalized) Korteweg--de Vries equation, and the less known Euler--Korteweg system, in both Eulerian coordinates and Lagrangian coordinates. The latter is itself an abstract framework for several models arising in water waves theory, superfluidity, and quantum hydrodynamics. As regards its application to compressible capillary fluids, attention is paid here to untangle the interplay between traveling waves/modulation equations in Eulerian coordinates and those in Lagrangian coordinates. In the most general setting, it is proved that the hyperbolicity of modulated equations is indeed necessary for the spectral stability of periodic traveling waves. This extends earlier results by Serre [Comm. Partial Differential Equations 2005], Oh and Zumbrun [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 2003], and Johnson, Zumbrun and Bronski [Phys. D 2010]. In addition, reduced necessary conditions are obtained in the small amplitude limit. Then numerical investigations are carried out for the modulated equations of the Euler--Korteweg system with two types of 'pressure' laws, namely the quadratic law of shallow water equations, and the nonmonotone van der Waals pressure law. Both the evolutionarity and the hyperbolicity of the modulated equations are tested, and regions of modulational instability are thus exhibited.

Modulated wave trains in generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinksi equations

This paper is concerned with the stability of periodic wave trains in a generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinski (gKS) equation. This equation is useful to describe the weak instability of low frequency perturbations for thin film flows down an inclined ramp. We provide a set of equations, namely Whitham's modulation equations, that determines the behaviour of low frequency perturbations of periodic wave trains. As a byproduct, we relate the spectral stability in the small wavenumber regime to properties of the modulation equations. This stability is always critical since 0 is a 0-Floquet number eigenvalue associated to translational invariance.

Whitham's equations for modulated roll-waves in shallow flows

This paper is concerned with the detailed behaviour of roll-waves undergoing a low-frequency perturbation. We rst derive the so-called Whitham's averaged modulation equations and relate the well-posedness of this set of equations to the spectral stability problem in the small Floquet-number limit. We then fully validate such a system and in particular, we are able to construct solutions to the shallow water equations in the neighbourhood of modulated roll-waves proles that exist for asymptotically large time.

Vortex-like finite-energy asymptotic profiles for isentropic compressible flows

Bidimensional incompressible viscous flows with well-localised vorticity are well-known to develop vortex structures. The purpose of the present paper is to recover the asymptotic profiles describing these phenomena for homogeneous finite-energy flows as asymptotic profiles for near-equilibrium isentropic compressible flows. This task is performed by extending the sharp description of the asymptotic behaviour of near-equilibrium compressible flows obtained by David Hoff and Kevin Zumbrun to the case of finite-energy vortex-like solutions.
