Dynamically consistent finite volume scheme for a bimonomeric simplified model with inflammation processes for Alzheimer's disease

A model of progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) incorporating the interactions of A$β$-monomers, oligomers, microglial cells and interleukins with neurons is considered. The resulting convection-diffusion-reaction system consists of four partial differential equations (PDEs) and one ordinary differential equation (ODE). We develop a finite volume (FV) scheme for this system, together with non-negativity and a priori bounds for the discrete solution, so that we establish the existence of a discrete solution to the FV scheme. It is shown that the scheme converges to an admissible weak solution of the model. The reaction terms of the system are discretized using a semi-implicit strategy that coincides with a nonstandard discretization of the spatially homogeneous (SH) model. This construction enables us to prove that the FV scheme is dynamically consistent with respect to the spatially homogeneous version of the model. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the model and to assess the behavior of the FV scheme.

Well-posedness and numerical analysis of an elapsed time model with strongly coupled neural networks

The elapsed time equation is an age-structured model that describes the dynamics of interconnected spiking neurons through the elapsed time since the last discharge, leading to many interesting questions on the evolution of the system from a mathematical and biological point of view. In this work, we deal with the case when the transmission after a spike is instantaneous and the case with a distributed delay that depends on the previous history of the system, which is a more realistic assumption. Since the instantaneous transmission case is known to be ill-posed due to non-uniqueness or jump discontinuities, we establish a criterion for well-posedness to determine when the solution remains continuous in time, through an invertibility condition that improves the existence theory under more relaxed hypothesis on the nonlinearity, including the strongly excitatory case. Inspired in the existence theory, we adapt the classical explicit upwind scheme through a robust fixed-point approach and we prove that the approximation given by this scheme converges to the solution of the nonlinear problem through BV-estimates and we extend the idea to the case with distributed delay. We also show some numerical simulations to compare the behavior of the system in the case of instantaneous transmission with the case of distributed delay under different parameters, leading to solutions with different asymptotic profiles.

Existence of entropy weak solutions for 1D non-local traffic models with space-discontinuous flux

We study a 1D scalar conservation law whose non-local flux has a single spatial discontinuity. This model is intended to describe traffic flow on a road with rough conditions. We approximate the problem through an upwind-type numerical scheme and provide compactness estimates for the sequence of approximate solutions. Then, we prove the existence and the uniqueness of entropy weak solutions. Numerical simulations corroborate the theoretical results and the limit model as the kernel support tends to zero is numerically investigated.
