Few-body bound states of bosonic mixtures in two-dimensional optical lattices

We study the formation of bound states in a binary mixture of a few bosons in small square optical lattices. Using the exact diagonalization method, we find that bound clusters of all available bosons can form. We provide a comprehensive numerical examination of these bound states for a wide range of repulsive intraspecies and attractive interspecies interactions. In contrast to binary mixtures in one-dimensional chains, we reveal that the binding energy of the clusters shows a non-monotonic dependence on the interspecies interaction strengths for small tunneling rates, developing a local minimum for intermediate attractive interactions. The findings of this work highlight the difference between the binding mechanisms of binary bosonic mixtures in one- and higher-dimensional lattices.

Counterflow of lattice polarons in harmonically confined optical lattices

We study a mobile impurity in a one-dimensional harmonically confined optical lattice interacting repulsively with a bosonic bath. The behavior of the impurity across baths with superfluid and Mott-insulator domains is examined, including its full back-action effect on the bath. We characterize the bath-impurity phase diagram and reveal the appearance of a correlated counterflow phase, which we support with an analytical model for a mobile impurity-hole pair. This phase shows an extended combined insulator domain of unity filling but no independent domain of constant density. The transition to this phase features a sudden orthogonality and the change of the shape of the impurity's profile to that of a free particle in an infinite square well. The findings of this work suggest the appearance of unconventional counterflow in trapped imbalanced atomic mixtures.

Persistent currents in Bose-Bose mixtures after an interspecies interaction quench

We study the persistent currents and interspecies entanglement generation in a Bose-Bose mixture formed by two atomic gases (hereafter labelled by the letters A and B) trapped in a one-dimensional ring lattice potential with an artificial gauge field after a sudden quench from zero to strong interactions between the two gases. Assuming that the strength of these interactions is much larger than the single species energies and that the gas A is initially in the Mott-insulator regime, we show that the current of the gas B is reduced with respect to its value prior the interaction quench. Averaging fast oscillations out, the relative decrease of this current is independent of the initial visibility and Peierls phase of the gas B and behaves quadratically with the visibility of the gas A. The second Rényi entropy of the reduced state measuring the amount of entanglement between the two gases is found to scale linearly with the number of sites and to be proportional to the relative decrease of the current.

Three-dimensional localized-delocalized Anderson transition in the time domain

Systems which can spontaneously reveal periodic evolution are dubbed time crystals. This is in analogy with space crystals that display periodic behavior in configuration space. While space crystals are modelled with the help of space periodic potentials, crystalline phenomena in time can be modelled by periodically driven systems. Disorder in the periodic driving can lead to Anderson localization in time: the probability for detecting a system at a fixed point of configuration space becomes exponentially localized around a certain moment in time. We here show that a three-dimensional system exposed to a properly disordered pseudo-periodic driving may display a localized-delocalized Anderson transition in the time domain, in strong analogy with the usual three-dimensional Anderson transition in disordered systems. Such a transition could be experimentally observed with ultra-cold atomic gases.

Harnessing synthetic gauge fields for maximally entangled state generation

We study the generation of entanglement between two species of neutral cold atoms living on an optical ring lattice, where each group of particles can be described by a $d$-dimensional Hilbert space (qu$d$it). Synthetic magnetic fields are exploited to create an entangled state between the pair of qu$d$its. Maximally entangled eigenstates are found for well defined values of the Aharonov-Bohm phase, which are zero energy eigenstates of both the kinetic and interacting parts of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, making them quite exceptional and robust against certain non-perturbative fluctuations of the Hamiltonian. We propose a protocol to reach the maximally entangled state (MES) by starting from an initially prepared ground state. Also, an indirect method to detect the MES by measuring the current of the particles is proposed.

Directed Transport of Atoms in a Hamiltonian Quantum Ratchet

We demonstrate the operation of a quantum ratchet in the absence of dissipative processes within the observation time (Hamiltonian regime). An atomic rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate is exposed to a sawtooth-like optical lattice potential, whose amplitude is periodically modulated in time. The ratchet transport arises from broken spatiotemporal symmetries of the driven potential, resulting in a desymmetrisation of transporting Eigenstates (Floquet states). The measured atomic current oscillates around a non-zero stationary value at longer observation times, shows resonances at positions determined by the photon recoil and depends on the initial phase of the drive, providing different lines of evidence for the full quantum character of the ratchet transport. The results provide a proof of principle demonstration of a quantum motor.

Many-Body Coherent Destruction of Tunneling

A new route to coherent destruction of tunneling is established by considering a monochromatic fast modulation of the self-interaction strength of a many-boson system. The modulation can be tuned such that only an arbitrarily, a priori prescribed number of particles are allowed to tunnel. The associated tunneling dynamics is sensitive to the odd or even nature of the number of bosons.

Controlling the Population Imbalance of a Bose-Einstein Condensate by a Symmetry-Breaking Driving Field

Nonlinear Floquet states associated with a symmetry-breaking driving field are exploited to control the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. The population imbalance between the two wells is shown to be controllable by slowly tuning system parameters along a closed path. The results extend symmetry-breaking-based quantum control to many-body systems and extend navigation of linear Floquet states to navigation of nonlinear Floquet states.

Resonant ratcheting of a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the rectification process of interacting quantum particles in a periodic potential exposed to the action of an external ac driving. The breaking of spatio-temporal symmetries leads to directed motion already in the absence of interactions. A hallmark of quantum ratcheting is the appearance of resonant enhancement of the current (Europhys. Lett. 79 (2007) 10007 and Phys. Rev. A 75 (2007) 063424). Here we study the fate of these resonances within a Gross-Pitaevskii equation which describes a mean field interaction between many particles. We find, that the resonance is i) not destroyed by interactions, ii) shifting its location with increasing interaction strength. We trace the Floquet states of the linear equations into the nonlinear domain, and show that the resonance gives rise to an instability and thus to the appearance of new nonlinear Floquet states, whose transport properties differ strongly as compared to the case of noninteracting particles.

Soliton ratchets in homogeneous nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems

We study in detail the ratchet-like dynamics of topological solitons in homogeneous nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems driven by a bi-harmonic force. By using a collective coordinate approach with two degrees of freedom, namely the center of the soliton, $X(t)$, and its width, $l(t)$, we show, first, that energy is inhomogeneously pumped into the system, generating as result a directed motion; and, second, that the breaking of the time shift symmetry gives rise to a resonance mechanism that takes place whenever the width $l(t)$ oscillates with at least one frequency of the external ac force. In addition, we show that for the appearance of soliton ratchets, it is also necesary to break the time-reversal symmetry. We analyze in detail the effects of dissipation in the system, calculating the average velocity of the soliton as a function of the ac force and the damping. We find current reversal phenomena depending on the parameter choice and discuss the important role played by the phases of the ac force. Our analytical calculations are confirmed by numerical simulations of the full partial differential equations of the sine-Gordon and $ϕ^4$ systems, which are seen to exhibit the same qualitative behavior. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental work on dissipation induced symmetry breaking.

Inhomogeneous soliton ratchets under two ac forces

We extend our previous work on soliton ratchet devices [L. Morales-Molina et al., Eur. Phys. J. B 37, 79 (2004)] to consider the joint effect of two ac forces including non-harmonic drivings, as proposed for particle ratchets by Savele'v et al. [Europhys. Lett. 67}, 179 (2004); Phys. Rev. E {\bf 70} 066109 (2004)]. Current reversals due to the interplay between the phases, frequencies and amplitudes of the harmonics are obtained. An analysis of the effect of the damping coefficient on the dynamics is presented. We show that solitons give rise to non-trivial differences in the phenomenology reported for particle systems that arise from their extended character. A comparison with soliton ratchets in homogeneous systems with biharmonic forces is also presented. This ratchet device may be an ideal candidate for Josephson junction ratchets with intrinsic large damping.

Ratchet behavior in nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems with point-like inhomogeneities

We investigate the ratchet dynamics of nonlinear Klein-Gordon kinks in a periodic, asymmetric lattice of point-like inhomogeneities. We explain the underlying rectification mechanism within a collective coordinate framework, which shows that such system behaves as a rocking ratchet for point particles. Careful attention is given to the kink width dynamics and its role in the transport. We also analyze the robustness of our kink rocking ratchet in the presence of noise. We show that the noise activates unidirectional motion in a parameter range where such motion is not observed in the noiseless case. This is subsequently corroborated by the collective variable theory. An explanation for this new phenomenom is given.

Ratchets in homogeneous extended systems: internal modes and the role of noise

We revisit the issue of directed motion induced by zero average forces in extended systems driven by ac forces. It has been shown recently that a directed energy current appears if the ac external force, $f(t)$, breaks the symmetry $f(t) = - f(t+T/2)$, $T$ being the period, if topological solitons (kinks) existed in the system. In this work, a collective coordinate approach allows us to identify the mechanism through which the width oscillation drives the kink and its relation with the mathematical symmetry conditions. Furthermore, our theory predicts, and numerical simulations confirm, that the direction of motion depends on the initial phase of the driving, while the system behaves in a ratchet-like fashion if averaging over initial conditions. Finally, the presence of noise overimposed to the ac driving does not destroy the directed motion; on the contrary, it gives rise to an activation process that increases the velocity of the motion. We conjecture that this could be a signature of resonant phenomena at larger noises.

Internal mode mechanism for collective energy transport in extended systems

We study directed energy transport in homogeneous nonlinear extended systems in the presence of homogeneous ac forces and dissipation. We show that the mechanism responsible for unidirectional motion of topological excitations is the coupling of their internal and translation degrees of freedom. Our results lead to a selection rule for the existence of such motion based on resonances that explains earlier symmetry analysis of this phenomenon. The direction of motion is found to depend both on the initial and the relative phases of the two harmonic drivings, even in the presence of noise.

Soliton ratchets out of point-like inhomogeneities

We introduce and study a novel design for a ratchet potential for soliton excitations. The potential is implemented by means of an array of point-like (delta) inhomogeneities in an otherwise homogeneous potential. We develop a collective coordinate theory that predicts that the effective potential acting on the soliton is periodic but asymmetric and gives rise to the ratchet effect. Numerical simulations fully confirm this prediction; quantitative agreement is reached by an improved version of the theory. Although we specifically show that it is most interesting for building Josephson junction ratchets capable to rectify time-symmetric ac forces, the proposed mechanism is very general and can appear in many contexts, including biological systems.
