Non-existence of negative derivations on the higher Nash blowup local algebra

Let $f\in\mathbb{C}[x_1,\ldots,x_s]$ be a weighted homogeneous polynomial having an isolated singularity and $\mathcal{T}_n(f)$ be its higher Nash blowup local algebra. We show that $\mathcal{T}_n(f)$ does not admit negative weighted derivations for $n\geq2$. This answers affirmatively a conjecture of Hussain-Ma-Yau-Zuo.

Regularity is bounded on a quasi-excellent Noetherian scheme

A point of a scheme has an associated tangent cone, the spectrum of a standard graded algebra encoding the local singularity. Its homological complexity can be measured by its graded Betti table: a matrix that records a part of the structure of its graded, minimal free resolution over a polynomial ring. A natural question is whether the homological complexity of the tangent cones varies arbitrarily across a scheme. In this paper, we show that this is not the case for a quasi-excellent Noetherian scheme; over such schemes, only finitely many graded Betti tables can occur. More generally, we show that a coherent sheaf over a quasi-excellent Noetherian scheme admits finitely many graded Betti tables, and that the constancy loci for the graded Betti table are constructible. As an immediate consequence, regularity is bounded on a quasi-excellent Noetherian scheme.

The defect of the F-pure threshold

Introduced by Takagi and Watanabe, the F-pure threshold is an invariant defined in terms of the Frobenius homomorphism. While it finds applications in various settings, it is primarily used as a local invariant. The purpose of this note is to start filling this gap by opening the study of its behavior on a scheme. To this end, we define the defect of the F-pure threshold of a local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ by setting ${\rm dfpt}(R)=\dim (R) - {\rm fpt}(\mathfrak{m})$. It turns out that this invariant defines an upper semi-continuous function on a scheme and satisfies Bertini-type theorems. We also study the behavior of the defect of the F-pure threshold under flat extensions and after blowing up the maximal ideal of a local ring.

Ladder determinantal varieties and their symbolic blowups

In this article we show that the symbolic Rees algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is strongly $F$-regular. Furthermore, we prove that the symbolic associated graded algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is $F$-pure. The latter implies that mixed ladder determinantal rings are $F$-pure. We also show that ideals of the poset of minors of a generic matrix give rise to $F$-pure algebras with straightening law.

Bounds and MacWilliams Identities for codes over Artinian rings

This work develops new foundations for the theory of linear codes over local Artinian commutative rings. We use algebraic invariants such as the socle, type, length, and minimal number of generators to measure the size of codes. We prove a relation between the type of a code and the free rank of its dual over Frobenius rings, extending previous results for chain rings. We also provide new upper bounds for the Hamming distance in terms of the length and type of a code and and conditions under which the dual of an MDS code remains MDS for general Artinian rings. The latter result is obtained by reducing to Frobenius rings via Nagata idealizations, which, to the best of our knowledge, had not been used in coding theory before. We introduce a conceptually different version of the weight enumerator polynomial. This enumerator is meaningful even in the case of infinite rings and yields new applications in the finite setting. Using this polynomial, we prove a MacWilliams identity that holds over Frobenius rings.

F-singularities of polynomials with square-free support

We show that the intersection of the irreducible components of a hypersurface defined by a polynomial with square-free support has F-rational singularities in characteristic $p>0$. As a consequence, we obtain that hypersurfaces defined by irreducible polynomials with square-free support have F-rational singularities, positively answering a question of Bath, Mustaţă, and Walther.

Bernstein-Sato polynomial and related invariants for meromorphic functions

We develop a theory of Bernstein-Sato polynomials for meromorphic functions and we use it to study the analytic continuation of Archimedian local zeta functions in this setting. We also introduce both an analytic and an algebraic theory of multiplier ideals for meromorphic functions and relate the jumping numbers of these multiplier ideals to the roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomials.

Blowup algebras of determinantal ideals in prime characteristic

We study when blowup algebras are $F$-split or strongly $F$-regular. Our main focus is on algebras given by symbolic and ordinary powers of ideals of minors of a generic matrix, a symmetric matrix, and a Hankel matrix. We also study ideals of Pfaffians of a skew-symmetric matrix. We use these results to obtain bounds on the degrees of the defining equations for these algebras. We also prove that the limit of the normalized regularity of the symbolic powers of these ideals exists and that their depth stabilizes. Finally, we show that, for determinantal ideals, there exists a monomial order for which taking initial ideals commutes with taking symbolic powers. To obtain these results we develop the notion of $F$-split filtrations and symbolic $F$-split ideals.

$F$-Volumes

In this work we define a numerical invariant called $F$-volume. This number extends the definition of $F$-threshold of a pair of ideals $I$ and $J$, $c^J(I)$ to a sequence of ideals $J$, $I_1, \ldots, I_t$. We obtain several properties that emulate those of the $F$-threshold. In particular, the $F$-volume detects $F$-pure complete intersections. In addition, we relate this invariant to the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity.

Purity of monoids and characteristic-free splittings in semigroup rings

Inspired by methods in prime characteristic in commutative algebra, we introduce and study combinatorial invariants of seminormal monoids. We relate such numbers with the singularities and homological invariants of the semigroup ring associated to the monoid. Our results are characteristic independent.

Regularity index of the generalized minimum distance function

We show that the generalized minimum distance function is non-increasing as the degree varies for reduced standard graded algebras over a field. This allows us to define its regularity index and its stabilization value. The stabilization value is computed for every cases. We study how the regularity index varies as the number of polynomial increases, and use this to give bounds for it.

Nash blowups of toric varieties in prime characteristic

We initiate the study of the resolution of singularities properties of Nash blowups over fields of prime characteristic. We prove that the iteration of normalized Nash blowups desingularizes normal toric surfaces. We also introduce a prime characteristic version of the logarithmic Jacobian ideal of a toric variety and prove that its blowup coincides with the Nash blowup of the variety. As a consequence, the Nash blowup of a, not necessarily normal, toric variety of arbitrary dimension in prime characteristic can be described combinatorially.

Bernstein-Sato theory for singular rings in positive characteristic

The Bernstein-Sato polynomial is an important invariant of an element or an ideal in a polynomial ring or power series ring of characteristic zero, with interesting connections to various algebraic and topological aspects of the singularities of the vanishing locus. Work of Mustaţă, later extended by Bitoun and the third author, provides an analogous Bernstein-Sato theory for regular rings of positive characteristic. In this paper, we extend this theory to singular ambient rings in positive characteristic. We establish finiteness and rationality results for Bernstein-Sato roots for large classes of singular rings, and relate these roots to other classes of numerical invariants defined via the Frobenius map. We also obtain a number of new results and simplified arguments in the regular case.

Bernstein's inequality and holonomicity for certain singular rings

In this manuscript we prove the Bernstein inequality and develop the theory of holonomic D-modules for rings of invariants of finite groups in characteristic zero, and for strongly F-regular finitely generated graded algebras with FFRT in prime characteristic. In each of these cases, the ring itself, its localizations, and its local cohomology modules are holonomic. We also show that holonomic D-modules, in this context, have finite length. We obtain these results using a more general version of Bernstein filtrations.

Frobenius methods in combinatorics

We survey results produced from the interaction between methods in prime characteristic and combinatorial commutative algebra. We showcase results for edge ideals, toric varieties, Stanley-Reisner rings, and initial ideals that were proven via Frobenius. We also discuss results for monomial ideals obtained using Frobenius-like maps. Finally, we present results for $F$-pure rings that were inspired by work done for Stanley-Reisner rings.

Symbolic powers of determinantal ideals in prime characteristic

We study the symbolic powers of determinantal ideals of generic, generic symmetric, and Hankel matrices of variables, and of Pfaffians of generic skew-symmetric matrices, in prime characteristic. Specifically, we show that the limit $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty} \frac{\textrm{reg}(I^{(n)})}{n}$ exists and that $\textrm{depth}(R/I^{(n)})$ stabilizes for $n\gg 0$. Furthermore, we give explicit formulas for the stable value of $\textrm{depth}(R/I^{(n)})$ in the generic and skew-symmetric cases. In order to show these results, we introduce the notion of symbolic $F$-purity of ideals which is satisfied by the classes of ideals mentioned above. Moreover, we find several properties satisfied by symbolic $F$-pure ideals. For example, we show that their symbolic Rees algebras and symbolic associated graded algebras are $F$-pure. As a consequence, their $a$-invariants and depths present good behaviors. In addition, we provide a Fedder's-like Criterion for symbolic $F$-purity.

Bernstein-Sato functional equations, $V$-filtrations, and multiplier ideals of direct summands

This paper investigates the existence and properties of a Bernstein-Sato functional equation in nonregular settings. In particular, we construct $D$-modules in which such formal equations can be studied. The existence of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial for a direct summand of a polynomial over a field is proved in this context. It is observed that this polynomial can have zero as a root, or even positive roots. Moreover, a theory of $V$-filtrations is introduced for nonregular rings, and the existence of these objects is established for what we call differentially extensible summands. This family of rings includes toric, determinantal, and other invariant rings. This new theory is applied to the study of multiplier ideals and Hodge ideals of singular varieties. Finally, we extend known relations among the objects of interest in the smooth case to the setting of singular direct summands of polynomial rings.
