On the spectral characterization of entire operators with deficiency indices (1,1)

For entire operators and entire operators in the generalized sense, we provide characterizations based on the spectra of their selfadjoint extensions. In order to obtain these spectral characterizations, we discuss the representation of a simple, regular, closed symmetric operator with deficiency indices (1,1) as a multiplication operator in a certain de Branges space.

Discrete spectrum in a critical coupling case of Jacobi matrices with spectral phase transitions by uniform asymptotic analysis

For a two-parameter family of Jacobi matrices exhibiting first-order spectral phase transitions, we prove discreteness of the spectrum in the positive real axis when the parameters are in one of the transition boundaries. To this end we develop a method for obtaining uniform asymptotics, with respect to the spectral parameter, of the generalized eigenvectors. Our technique can be applied to a wide range of Jacobi matrices.

Applications of M.G. Krein's Theory of Regular Symmetric Operators to Sampling Theory

The classical Kramer sampling theorem establishes general conditions that allow the reconstruction of functions by mean of orthogonal sampling formulae. One major task in sampling theory is to find concrete, non trivial realizations of this theorem. In this paper we provide a new approach to this subject on the basis of the M. G. Krein's theory of representation of simple regular symmetric operators having deficiency indices (1,1). We show that the resulting sampling formulae have the form of Lagrange interpolation series. We also characterize the space of functions reconstructible by our sampling formulae. Our construction allows a rigorous treatment of certain ideas proposed recently in quantum gravity.

Bounded Rank-one Perturbations in Sampling Theory

Sampling theory concerns the problem of reconstruction of functions from the knowledge of their values at some discrete set of points. In this paper we derive an orthogonal sampling theory and associated Lagrange interpolation formulae from a family of bounded rank-one perturbations of a self-adjoint operator that has only discrete spectrum of multiplicity one.

On the Two Spectra Inverse Problem for Semi-Infinite Jacobi Matrices

We present results on the unique reconstruction of a semi-infinite Jacobi operator from the spectra of the operator with two different boundary conditions. This is the discrete analogue of the Borg-Marchenko theorem for Schr{ö}dinger operators in the half-line. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for two real sequences to be the spectra of a Jacobi operator with different boundary conditions.

Cluster magnetic fields from large-scale-structure and galaxy-cluster shocks

The origin of the micro-Gauss magnetic fields in galaxy clusters is one of the outstanding problem of modern cosmology. We have performed three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of the nonrelativistic Weibel instability in an electron-proton plasma, in conditions typical of cosmological shocks. These simulations indicate that cluster fields could have been produced by shocks propagating through the intergalactic medium during the formation of large-scale structure or by shocks within the cluster. The strengths of the shock-generated fields range from tens of nano-Gauss in the intercluster medium to a few micro-Gauss inside galaxy clusters.

Long-time evolution of magnetic fields in relativistic GRB shocks

We investigate the long-time evolution of magnetic fields generated by the two-stream instability at ultra- and sub-relativistic astrophysical collisionless shocks. Based on 3D PIC simulation results, we introduce a 2D toy model of interacting current filaments. Within the framework of this model, we demonstrate that the field correlation scale in the region far downstream the shock grows nearly as the light crossing time, lambda(t) ~ ct, thus making the diffusive field dissipation inefficient. The obtained theoretical scaling is tested using numerical PIC simulations. This result extends our understanding of the structure of collisionless shocks in gamma-ray bursts and other astrophysical objects.

Kinetics of Particles in Relativistic Collisionless Shocks

Charged plasma particles form an anisotropic counter-streaming distribution at the front of a shock. In the near- and ultra-relativistic regimes, Weibel (or two-stream) instability produces near-equipartition, chaotic, small-scale magnetic fields. The fields introduce effective collisions and "thermalize" the plasma particles via pitch-angle scattering. The properties of jitter radiation emitted by accelerated electrons from these small-scale fields are markedly different from synchrotron spectra. Here we theoretical summary and the results of recent numerical 3D PIC plasma kinetic simulations. The relation of the obtained results to the theory of gamma-ray bursts is outlined.

Nuclear reaction rates and energy in stellar plasmas : The effect of highly damped modes

The effects of the highly damped modes in the energy and reaction rates in a plasma are discussed. These modes, with wavenumbers $k \gg k_{D}$, even being only weakly excited, with less than $k_{B}T$ per mode, make a significant contribution to the energy and screening in a plasma. When the de Broglie wavelength is much less than the distance of closest approach of thermal electrons, a classical analysis of the plasma can
