Controlling quantum transport by measurement-rate modulation

Temporal modulation of the measurement rate provides a powerful mechanism for controlling open-system dynamics through measurement backaction. We demonstrate this mechanism in a minimal exactly solvable model of a continuously monitored quantum particle on a switching lattice. We derive exact analytical expressions for the long-time current under both periodic and stochastic switching, revealing a common slow-switching limit and identifying a measurement-induced crossover between Zeno- and anti-Zeno-dominated transport regimes that controls the direction of the current.

Highly robust logical qubit encoding in an ensemble of V-symmetrical qutrits

We propose using even and odd Schödinger cat states formed from coherent states of U(3) of an ensemble of qutrits with a symmetrical V-configuration (a qubit-disguised qutrit) to encode a logical qubit. These carefully engineered logical qubit states are parameter independent stationary states of the effective master equation governing the evolution of the ensemble and, consequently, constitute dark states and are invulnerable to dissipation and correlated collective dephasing. In particular, the logical qubit states are immune to single qutrit decay (the analogous of single photon loss process for qutrits) and simultaneous decay and driving of two qutrits (the analogous two-photon loss and driving processes for qutrits). In addition, we show how to implement the single-qubit quantum NOT gate and the Hadamard gate followed by either the phase gate or the phase and $Z$ gates. We study analytically the case of two qutrits and conclude that the logical qubit states exhibit parity-sensitive inhomogeneous broadening and local correlated dephasing: the even logical state is completely immune to these processes, while odd one is vulnerable. Nevertheless, in the presence of these interactions one can also define another odd state with mixed permutation symmetry that is immune to both inhomogeneous broadening and local correlated dephasing. We suggest that these results can be extrapolated to an arbitrary number of qutrits. The effective master equation is deduced from a physical system composed of two parametrically coupled cavities with one of them interacting dispersively with an ensemble of three-level atoms (the qutrits). In principle this physical system can be implemented by means of two coplanar waveguide resonators, a SQUID parametrically coupling them, and a cloud of alkali atoms close to one of the resonators.

Membrane-in-the-middle optomechanical system and structural frequencies

We consider a one-dimensional membrane-in-the-middle model for a cavity that consists of two fixed, perfect mirrors and a mobile dielectric membrane between them that has a constant electric susceptibility. We present a sequence of exact cavity angular frequencies that we call structural angular frequencies and that have the remarkable property that they are independent of the position of the membrane inside the cavity. Furthermore, the case of a thin membrane is considered and simple, approximate formulae for the angular frequencies and for the modes of the cavity are obtained. Finally, the cavity electromagnetic potential is numerically calculated and it is found that the potential is accurately described by a multiple scales solution.

Quantum ratchet with Lindblad rate equations

A quantum random walk model is established on a one-dimensional periodic lattice that fluctuates between two possible states. This model is defined by Lindblad rate equations that incorporate the transition rates between the two lattice states. Leveraging the system's symmetries, the particle velocity can be described using a finite set of equations, even though the state space is of infinite dimension. These equations yield an analytical expression for the velocity in the long-time limit, which is employed to analyze the characteristics of directed motion. Notably, the velocity can exhibit multiple inversions, and to achieve directed motion, distinct, nonzero transition rates between lattice states are required.
