Bridging geometries and potentials in DBI cosmologies

We investigate the link between the warp function and the potential in DBI cosmologies in connection with the possibility they represent power-law solutions. A prescription is given to take advantage of the known result that given a warp factor there is always a choice of potential resulting in a constant ratio between pressure and energy density. The method is illustrated with examples with interesting models for either the warp factor or the potential. We complete this investigation by giving a recipe to exploit symmetries in order to generate new solutions from existing ones; this method can be applied, for instance, to the power-law cosmologies obtained using our prescription.

Unifying dark components and crossing the phantom divide with a classical Dirac field

In this paper we consider a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmological model whit cosmological constant, containing a stiff fluid and a classical Dirac field. The proposed cosmological scenario describes the evolution of effective dark matter and dark energy components reproducing, with the help of that effective multifluid configuration, the quintessential behavior. We find the value of the scale factor where the effective dark energy component crosses the phantom divide. The model we introduce, which can be considered as a modified $\La$CDM one, is characterized by a set of parameters which may be constrained by the astrophysical observations available up to date.

Crossing the phantom divide without phantom matter

A class of braneworld models can lead to phantom-like acceleration of the late universe, but without the need for any phantom matter. In the simplest models, the universe contains only cold dark matter and a cosmological constant. We generalize these models by introducing a quintessence field. The new feature in our models is that quintessence leads to a crossing of the phantom divide, $w=-1$. This is a purely gravitational effect, and there is no phantom instability. Furthermore, the Hubble parameter is always decreasing, and there is no big rip singularity in the future.

Crossing the phantom barrier with purely kinetic multiple k-essence

We consider multiple k-essence sources and obtain the conditions their kinetic functions must satisfy so that purely kinetic k-essences lead to models with phantom barrier crossing. After that, we show that polynomial kinetic functions allow the integration of the dynamical equations determining the geometry and the k-fields. The models thus obtained have accelerated expansion at late cosmic time, representing universes ending at a finite time with a big rip singularity. In addition, these models begin to evolve from an initial singularity, so they have a finite time span.

Dual interacting cosmologies and late accelerated expansion

In this paper we show that by considering a universe dominated by two interacting components a superaccelerated expansion can be obtained from a decelerated one by applying a dual transformation that leaves the Einstein's field equations invariant.

Anisotropic k-essence cosmologies

We investigate a Bianchi type-I (BTI) cosmology with k essence and find the set of models which dissipate the initial anisotropy. There are cosmological models with extended tachyon fields and k essence having constant bariotropic index. We obtain the conditions leading to a regular bounce of the average geometry and the residual anisotropy on the bounce. For constant potential, we develop purely kinetic k-essence models which are dust dominated in their early stages, dissipate the initial anisotropy and end in a stable de Sitter accelerated expansion scenario. We show that linear k field and polynomial kinetic function models evolve asymptotically to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmologies. The linear case is compatible with an asymptotic potential interpolating between $V_l\propto ϕ^{-γ_l}$, in the shear dominated regime, and $V_l\proptoϕ^{-2}$ at late time. In the polynomial case, the general solution contains cosmological models with an oscillatory average geometry. For linear k essence, we find the general solution in the BTI cosmology when the k field is driven by an inverse square potential. This model shares the same geometry than a quintessence field driven by an exponential potential.

Quintessence as k-essence

Quintessence and k-essence have been proposed as candidates for the dark energy component of the universe that would be responsible of the currently observed accelerated expansion. In this paper we investigate the degree of resemblance between those two theoretical setups, and find that every quintessence model can be viewed as a k-essence model generated by a kinetic linear function. In addition, we show the true effects of k-essence begin at second order in the expansion of the kinetic function in powers of the kinetic energy.

Interacting fluids generating identical, dual and phantom cosmologies

We find the group of symmetry transformations generated by interacting fluids in spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime which links cosmologies with the same scale factor {\it (identity)} or with scale factors $a$ and $a^{-1}$ {\it (duality)}. There exists a duality between contracting and superaccelerated expanding scenarios associated with {\it (phantom)} cosmologies. We investigate the action of this symmetry group on self-interacting minimally(conformally) coupled quintessence and $k$-essence cosmologies.

Large-scale inhomogeneities in modified Chaplygin gas cosmologies

We extend the homogeneous modified Chaplygin cosmologies to large-scale perturbations by formulating a Zeldovich-like approximation. We show that the model interpolates between an epoch with a soft equation of state and a de Sitter phase, and that in the intermediate regime its matter content is simply the sum of dust and a cosmological constant. We then study how the large-scale inhomogeneities evolve and compare the results with cold dark matter (CDM), $Λ$CDM and generalized Chaplygin scenarios. Interestingly, we find that unlike the latter, our models do always resemble $Λ$CDM.

Duality extended Chaplygin cosmologies with a big rip

We consider modifications to the Friedmann equation motivated by recent proposals along these lines pursuing an explanation to the observed late time acceleration. Here we show those modifications can be framed within a theory with self-interacting gravity, where the term self-interaction refers here to the presence of functions of $ρ$ and $p$ in the right hand side of the Einstein equations. We then discuss the construction of the duals of the cosmologies generated within that framework. After that we investigate the modifications required to generate generalized and modified Chaplygin cosmologies and show that their duals belong to a larger family of cosmologies we call extended Chaplygin cosmologies. Finally, by letting the parameters of those models take values not earlier considered in the literature we show some representatives of that family of cosmologies display sudden future singularities, which indicates their behavior is rather different from generalized or modified Chaplygin gas cosmologies. This reinforces the idea that modifications of gravity can be responsible for unexpected evolutionary features in the universe.

Atypical k-essence cosmologies

We analyze the implications of having a divergent speed of sound in k-essence cosmological models. We first study a known theory of that kind, for which the Lagrangian density depends linearly on the time derivative of the k-field. We show that when k-essence is the only source consistency requires that the potential of the k-field be of the inverse square form. Then, we review the known result that the corresponding power-law solutions can be mapped to power-law solutions of theories with no divergence in the speed of sound. After that, we argue that the requirement of a divergent sound speed at some point fixes uniquely the form of the Lagrangian to be exactly the one considered earlier and prove the asymptotic stability of the most interesting solutions belonging to the divergent theory. Then, we discuss the implications having not just k-essence but also matter. This is interesting because introducing another component breaks the rigidity of the theory, and the form of the potential ceases to be unique as happened in the pure k-essence case. Finally, we show the finiteness of the effective sound speed under an appropiate definition.

Unified phantom cosmologies

We present a general algorithm based on the concept of form-invariance which can be used for generating phantom cosmologies. It involves linear transformations between the kinetic energy and the potential of the scalar field, and transforms solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations which preserve the weak energy condition into others which violate it, while keeping the energy density of the field positive. All known solutions representing phantom cosmologies are unified by this procedure. Using the general algorithm we obtain those solutions and show the relations between them. In addition, the scale factors of the product and seed solutions are related by a generalization of the well-known $a\to a^{-1}$ duality.

On big rip singularities

In this comment we discuss big rip singularities occurring in typical phantom models by violation of the weak energy condition. After that, we compare them with future late-time singularities arising in models where the scale factor ends in a constant value and there is no violation of the strong energy condition. In phantom models the equation of state is well defined along the whole evolution, even at the big rip. However, both the pressure and the energy density of the phantom field diverge. In contrast, in the second kind of model the equation of state is not defined at the big rip because the pressure bursts at a finite value of the energy density.

Extended tachyon field, Chaplygin gas and solvable k-essence cosmologies

We investigate a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime filled with k-essence and find the set of functions F which generate three different families of extended tachyon fields and Chaplygin gases. They lead to accelerated and superaccelerated expanding scenarios. For any function F, we find the first integral of the k-field equation when the k-field is driven by an inverse square potential or by a constant one. In the former, we obtain the general solution of the coupled Einstein-k-field equations for a linear function F. This model shares the same kinematics of the background geometry with the ordinary scalar field one driven by an exponential potential. However, they are dynamically different. For a constant potential, we introduce a k-field model that exhibits a transition from a power-law phase to a de Sitter stage, inducing a modified Chaplygin gas.

Phantom k-essence cosmologies

We devise a method to obtain a phantom version of FRW k-essence cosmologies with homogeneous k-fields by applying form-invariance transformations. It can be seen that the transformation performs the maps $H\toH$ and $ρ+p\to-(ρ+p)$, which in turn give $γ\toγ$ and $a\to a^{-1}$. The discussion is presented in a general setup, valid for FRW k-essence cosmologies, and then we discuss power-law solutions for illustration purposes. First, we deal with models such that the gradient of the k-field is not constant, which include standard and generalized tachyon cosmologies. We concentrate on the usual tachyon and show the phantom symmetry involves a change in the potential and that it generates an extended super-accelerated tachyon field. Then, we turn our attention to models for which the time derivative of the k-field is not constant, and we show the transformation can be implemented without changing the potential at all.

An exact model of conformal quintessence

A non--minimally coupled quintessence model is investigated and the conditions for a stationary solution to the coincidence problem are obtained. For a conformally coupled scalar field and dissipative matter, a general solution possessing late acceleration is found. It fits rather well the high redshift supernovae data and gives a good prediction of the age of the Universe. Likewise, the cold dark matter component dominates the cosmological perturbations at late times albeit they decrease with expansion.

Power-law expansion in k-essence cosmology

We study spatially flat isotropic universes driven by k-essence. It is shown that Friedmann and k-field equations may be analytically integrated for arbitrary k-field potentials during evolution with a constant baryotropic index. It follows that there is an infinite number of dynamically different k-theories with equivalent kinematics of the gravitational field. We show that there is a large "window" of stable solutions, and that the dust-like behaviour separates stable from unstable expansion. Restricting to the family of power law solutions, it is argued that the linear scalar field model, with constant function F, is isomorphic to a model with divergent speed of sound and this makes them less suitable for cosmological modeling than the non-linear k-field solutions we find in this paper.

Internal symmetry in Bianchi type-I cosmologies

Using the one-parameter internal symmetry group in the Bianchi type-I spacetime for cosmological models with a perfect fluid, we show that a system of coordinates exists in the associated internal space where two scale factors become equal. We find the general solution for an anisotropic model containing a perfect fluid with constant baryotropic index and investigate the asymptotic regimes. We obtain exact solutions for a set of anisotropic fluids which includes an anisotropic stiff fluid.
