Gogny interaction from beginnings to current challenges

The main goal of the present review article is to gather for the first time various facets of the phenomenological effective Gogny interaction which was originally proposed in the 70's. This involves both nuclear phenomena of interest that led to its creation and evolution as well as highly technical aspects that led the objectives to be achieved. With this in mind, we propose a discussion structured around four points. After a general introduction, the history and philosophy of the Gogny interaction is exposed. In particular, one highlights an intuitive way of guiding the determination of the parameters of the phenomenological interaction with the results obtained from a realistic interaction using Hartree-Fock calculations and second order corrections and a G-matrix. One also shows that physical phenomena such as pairing or fission were essential to improve the parameterization. The evolution of the original analytical form over the years is also discussed. The second point concern the emulator that was used for the generation of parameterizations. Its modifications, consistent with the evolution of the analytical form, are given. Other fitting procedures, more recent, are also evoked. The third key point is dedicated to the role of the nuclear matter in the fitting process and the acceptance of a parameterization. The objective of the last key point is to highlight some results obtained with the Gogny interaction in nuclear structure, fission and reactions that have allowed to interpret experimental data.

Analysis of quantum correlations within the ground state of a three level Lipkin model

The performance of beyond mean field methods in solving the quantum many body problem for fermions is usually characterized by the correlation energy measured with respect to the underlying mean field value. In this paper we address the issue of characterizing the amount of correlations associated to different approximations from a quantum information perspective. With this goal in mind, we analyze the traditional Hartree-Fock (HF) method with spontaneous symmetry breaking, the HF with symmetry restoration and the generator coordinate method (GCM) in a exactly solvable fermion model known as the three-level Lipkin model. To characterize correlations including entanglement and beyond we use the quantum discord between different partition orbitals. We find that for physically motivated partitions, the quantum discord of the exact ground state is reasonably well reproduced by the different approximations. However, other partitions create "fake quantum correlations" in order to capture quantum correlations corresponding to partitions for which the Hartree-Fock solution fails. Those are removed and redistributed through a symmetry restoration process.

Correlation energy and quantum correlations in a solvable model

Typically in many-body systems the correlation energy, which is defined as the difference between the exact ground state energy and the mean-field solution, has been a measure of the system's total correlations. However, under the quantum information context, it is possible to define some quantities in terms of the system's constituents that measure the classical and quantum correlations, such as the entanglement entropy, mutual information, quantum discord, one-body entropy, etc. In this work, we apply concepts of quantum information in fermionic systems in order to study traditional correlation measures (the relative correlation energy) from a novel approach. Concretely, we analyze the two and three level Lipkin models, which are exactly solvable (but non trivial) models very used in the context of the many-body problem.

Two-orbital quantum discord in fermion systems

A simple expression to compute the quantum discord between two orbitals in fermion systems is derived using the parity superselection rule. As the correlation between orbitals depends on the basis chosen, we discuss a special orbital basis, the natural one. We show that quantum correlations between natural orbital pairs disappear when the pairing tensor is zero, i.e. the particle number symmetry is preserved. The Hartree-Fock orbitals within a Slater determinant state, a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov quasiparticle orbitals in a quasiparticle vacuum, or the ground state of a Hamiltonian with particle symmetry and their corresponding natural orbitals are some relevant examples of natural basis and their corresponding states. Since natural orbitals have that special property, we seek for the quantum discord in non-natural orbital basis. We analyze our findings in the context of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick and Agassi models.

Future of Nuclear Fission Theory

There has been much recent interest in nuclear fission, due in part to a new appreciation of its relevance to astrophysics, stability of superheavy elements, and fundamental theory of neutrino interactions. At the same time, there have been important developments on a conceptual and computational level for the theory. The promising new theoretical avenues were the subject of a workshop held at the University of York in October 2019; this report summarises its findings and recommendations.

Description of the asymmetric to symmetric fission transition in the neutron-deficient Thoriums -- Role of the tensor force

In the present study, we have investigated the impact of the tensor force on fission paths, in particular the symmetric and asymmetric barriers in 230 Th, 226 Th, 222 Th and 216 Th isotopes which display an asymmetric to symmetric fission transition. This analysis has been performed within the HFB approach with (Q 20 ,Q 30 ,Q 40 ) as collective variable constraints, using the D1ST2a Gogny+tensor term interaction and comparing to the standard D1S Gogny interaction results. The effects from the tensor term on the potential energy surface landscape, and especially on barrier heights and its topology by opening a new valley in agreement with experimental data, are found to be crucial in the description of exotic actinide fission. We conclude that a tensor term should be integrated to the long range part of the effective interaction for a better description of the fission.

Direct Evidence for Octupole Deformation in $^{146}$Ba and the Origin of Large $E1$ Moment Variations in Reflection-Asymmetric Nuclei

Despite the more than one order of magnitude difference between the measured dipole moments in $^{144}$Ba and $^{146}$Ba, the strength of the octupole correlations in $^{146}$Ba are found to be as strong as those in $^{144}$Ba with a similarly large value of $B(E3;3^- \rightarrow 0^+)$ determined as 48($^{+21}_{-29}$) W.u. The new results not only establish unambiguously the presence of a region of octupole deformation centered on these neutron-rich Ba isotopes, but also manifest the dependence of the electric dipole moments on the occupancy of different neutron orbitals in nuclei with enhanced octupole strength, as revealed by fully microscopic calculations.
