Gaussian lower bounds for the Boltzmann equation without cut-off

The study of positivity of solutions to the Boltzmann equation goes back to Carleman (1933), and the initial argument of Carleman was developed byPulvirenti-Wennberg (1997), the second author and Briant (2015). The appearance of a lower bound with Gaussian decay had however remained an open question for long-range interactions (the so-called non-cutoff collision kernels). We answer this question and establish such Gaussian lower bound for solutions to the Boltzmann equation without cutoff, in the case of hard and moderately soft potentials, with spatial periodic conditions, and under the sole assumption that hydrodynamic quantities (local mass, local energy and local entropy density) remain bounded. The paper is mostly self-contained, apart from the uniform upper bound on the solution established by the third author (2016).

Decay estimates for large velocities in the Boltzmann equation without cutoff

We consider solutions $f=f(t,x,v)$ to the full (spatially inhomogeneous) Boltzmann equation with periodic spatial conditions $x \in \mathbb T^d$, for hard and moderately soft potentials \emph{without the angular cutoff assumption}, and under the \emph{a priori} assumption that the main hydrodynamic fields, namely the local mass $\int\_v f(t,x,v)$ and local energy $\int\_v f(t,x,v)|v|^2$ and local entropy $\int\_v f(t,x,v) \ln f(t,x,v)$, are controlled along time. We establish quantitative estimates of \emph{propagation} in time of "pointwise polynomial moments", i.e. $\sup\_{x,v} f(t,x,v) (1+|v|)^q$, $q \ge 0$. In the case of hard potentials, we also prove \emph{appearance} of these moments for all $q \ge 0$. In the case of moderately soft potentials we prove the \emph{appearance} of low-order pointwise moments.

The Schauder estimate for kinetic integral equations

We establish interior Schauder estimates for kinetic equations with integro-differential diffusion. We study equations of the form $f_t + v \cdot \nabla_x f = \mathcal L_v f + c$, where $\mathcal L_v$ is an integro-differential diffusion operator of order $2s$ acting in the $v$-variable. Under suitable ellipticity and Hölder continuity conditions on the kernel of $\mathcal L_v$, we obtain an a priori estimate for $f$ in a properly scaled Hölder space.

The weak Harnack inequality for the Boltzmann equation without cut-off

In this paper, we obtain the weak Harnack inequality and Hölder estimates for a large class of kinetic integro-differential equations. We prove that the Boltzmann equation without cut-off can be written in this form and satisfies our assumptions provided that the mass density is bounded away from vacuum and mass, energy and entropy densities are bounded above. As a consequence, we derive a local Hölder estimate and a quantitative lower bound for solutions of the (inhomogeneous) Boltzmann equation without cut-off.

Multi-dimensional Burgers equation with unbounded initial data: well-posedness and dispersive estimates

The Cauchy problem for a scalar conservation laws admits a unique entropy solution when the data $u_0$ is a bounded measurable function (Kruzhkov). The semi-group $(S_t)_{t\ge0}$ is contracting in the $L^1$-distance. For the multi-dimensional Burgers equation, we show that $(S_t)_{t\ge0}$ extends uniquely as a continuous semi-group over $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ whenever $1\le p<\infty$, and $u(t):=S_tu_0$ is actually an entropy solution to the Cauchy problem. When $p\le q\le \infty$ and $t>0$, $S_t$ actually maps $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ into $L^q(\mathbb{R}^n)$. These results are based upon new dispersive estimates. The ingredients are on the one hand Compensated Integrability, and on the other hand a De Giorgi-type iteration.

A dispersive estimate for the multidimensional Burgers equation

We study the multi-dimensional Burgers equation $u_t + u u_{x_1} + \dots + u^d u_{x_d} = 0$. We prove that the $L^\infty$ norm of entropy solutions of this equation decays polynomially as $t \to \infty$ in terms of the $L^1$ norm of the initial data only.

Oscillation properties of scalar conservation laws

We obtain several new regularity results for solutions of scalar conservation laws satisfying the genuine nonlinearity condition. We prove that the solutions are continuous outside of the jump set, which is codimension one rectifiable. We show that the entropy dissipation vanishes away from the closure of the jump set. We prove that the solution decays algebraically in $L^\infty$ as $t \to \infty$ and we compute the presumably optimal decay rate. All these results are based on a local oscillation estimate which is obtained properly adapting some ideas of De Giorgi from the context of elliptic equations.

Global a priori estimates for the inhomogeneous Landau equation with moderately soft potentials

We establish a priori upper bounds for solutions to the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equation in the case of moderately soft potentials, with arbitrary initial data, under the assumption that mass, energy and entropy densities stay under control. Our pointwise estimates decay polynomially in the velocity variable. We also show that if the initial data satisfies a Gaussian upper bound, this bound is propagated for all positive times.

Hölder gradient estimates for a class of singular or degenerate parabolic equations

We prove interior Hölder estimate for the spatial gradients of the viscosity solutions to the singular or degenerate parabolic equation $$ u_t=|\nabla u|^κ\mbox{div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u), $$ where $p\in (1,\infty)$ and $κ\in (1-p,\infty).$ This includes the from $L^\infty$ to $C^{1,α}$ regularity for parabolic $p$-Laplacian equations in both divergence form with $κ=0$, and non-divergence form with $κ=2-p$. This work is a continuation of a paper by the last two authors \cite{JS}.

Upper bounds for parabolic equations and the Landau equation

We consider a parabolic equation in nondivergence form, defined in the full space $[0,\infty) \times \mathbb R^d$, with a power nonlinearity as the right hand side. We obtain an upper bound for the solution in terms of a weighted control in $L^p$. This upper bound is applied to the homogeneous Landau equation with moderately soft potentials. We obtain an estimate in $L^\infty(\mathbb R^d)$ for the solution of the Landau equation, for positive time, which depends only on the mass, energy and entropy of the initial data.

A new regularization mechanism for the Boltzmann equation without cut-off

We apply recent results on regularity for general integro-differential equations to derive a priori estimates in Hölder spaces for the space homogeneous Boltzmann equation in the non cut-off case. We also show an a priori estimate in $L^\infty$ which applies in the space inhomogeneous case as well, provided that the macroscopic quantities remain bounded.

Hölder gradient estimates for parabolic homogeneous p-Laplacian equations

We prove interior Hölder estimates for the spatial gradient of viscosity solutions to the parabolic homogeneous $p$-Laplacian equation \[ u_t=|\nabla u|^{2-p} \mbox{ div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u), \] where $1<p<\infty$. This equation arises from tug-of-war-like stochastic games with noise. It can also be considered as the parabolic $p$-Laplacian equation in non divergence form.

A non local Monge-Ampere equation

We introduce a non local analog to the Monge-Ampere operator and show some of its properties. We prove that a global problem involving this operator has C 1,1 solutions in the full space.

Uniqueness of radial solutions for the fractional Laplacian

We prove general uniqueness results for radial solutions of linear and nonlinear equations involving the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ with $s \in (0,1)$ for any space dimensions $N \geq 1$. By extending a monotonicity formula found by Cabre and Sire \cite{CaSi-10}, we show that the linear equation $(-Δ)^s u+ Vu = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ has at most one radial and bounded solution vanishing at infinity, provided that the potential $V$ is a radial and non-decreasing. In particular, this result implies that all radial eigenvalues of the corresponding fractional Schrödinger operator $H=(-Δ)^s + V$ are simple. Furthermore, by combining these findings on linear equations with topological bounds for a related problem on the upper half-space $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+$, we show uniqueness and nondegeneracy of ground state solutions for the nonlinear equation $(-Δ)^s Q + Q - |Q|^α Q = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ for arbitrary space dimensions $N \geq 1$ and all admissible exponents $α>0$. This generalizes the nondegeneracy and uniqueness result for dimension N=1 recently obtained by the first two authors in \cite{FrLe-10} and, in particular, the uniqueness result for solitary waves of the Benjamin--Ono equation found by Amick and Toland \cite{AmTo-91}.
