Spin-momentum locking of polariton edge states in honeycomb lattices

Transverse-electric/Transverse-magnetic splitting in dielectric-mirror microcavities introduces an effective spin-orbit coupling for photons. While the bulk states remain linearly polarized, for exponentially localized edge states in a photonic lattice, this coupling induces elliptical polarization whose handedness is locked to the propagation direction, analogous to the transverse spin of evanescent electromagnetic waves. We reveal spin-momentum locking through Stokes polarimetry of zigzag edge states in a honeycomb exciton-polariton lattice. The effect persists in a stretched honeycomb supporting a photonic bandgap, where spin-polarized carrier injection enables selective lasing of either chiral edge states. Our results provide a route toward ultrafast spin-controlled unidirectional propagation in polariton systems without external magnetic fields.

Spin injection of exciton-polaritons with halide perovskites at room temperature

Exciton-polaritons, hybrid photon-exciton quasiparticles, constitute a useful platform for the study of light-matter interaction and nonlinear photonic applications. In this work, we realize a monolithic Tamm-plasmon microcavity embedding a thin film of two-dimensional halide perovskites with a tunable polymer spacer that controls the exciton-photon detuning. Angle-resolved optical spectroscopy at room temperature reveals the lower polariton branch dispersions in the linear regime for several detunings. Under circularly polarized, quasi-resonant laser excitation, the spin injection of excitons and their relaxation towards the lower polariton branch demonstrates its preservation. The observed spin-polarized emission is consistent with the fast decay of polaritons: spin relaxation mechanisms become inefficient during this short time. Our results provide promising insights into the spin control of polaritonic devices, including chiral lasers and switches.

Coupling Dynamics and Linear Polarization Phenomena in Codirectional Polariton Waveguide Couplers

In this work, we explore the potential of spin-based integrated devices using polariton waveguides that form codirectional couplers. For suitable coupler parameters, a transfer of condensates between the arms of the coupler, occurs leading to the observation of Josephson-like oscillations. The ability to tune the periodicity of these oscillations opens the way to the design of polaritonic circuits in which the directionality of the signal towards the output terminals can be controlled. We also investigate the response of the devices to linearly polarized excitation, delving into the dynamics of linear polarization at the output terminals of long couplers, providing valuable insights into the potential applications of spin-based polariton devices, including polariton switches and logic gates with efficient operation. Our results are supported by numerical simulations based on generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing the dynamics of coherent polaritons in spatially non-uniform system. We show, how the coupling and the controllable spin degree of freedom in polariton couplers opens avenues for innovative optical architectures and functionalities.

Cavity Polariton Condensate in a Disordered Environment

We report on the influence of disorder on an exciton-polariton condensate in a ZnO based bulk planar microcavity and compare experimental results with a theoretical model for a non-equilibrium condensate. Experimentally, we detect intensity fluctuations within the far-field emission pattern even at high condensate densities which indicates a significant impact of disorder. We show that these effects rely on the driven dissipative nature of the condensate and argue that they can be accounted for by spatial phase inhomogeneities induced by disorder, which occur even for increasing condensate densities realized in the regime of high excitation power. Thus, non-equilibrium effects strongly suppress the stabilization of the condensate against disorder, contrarily to what is expected for equilibrium condensates in the high density limit. Numerical simulations based on our theoretical model reproduce the experimental data.
