Threshold solutions for the $3d$ cubic INLS: the energy-subcritical case

We revisit the work [L. Campos and J. Murphy, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 55 (2023), pp. 3807--3843], which classified the dynamics of $H^1$ solutions at the ground state threshold for cubic inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equations of the form $i\partial_t u + Δu + |x|^{-b}|u|^2 u = 0$ in the range $b\in(0,\tfrac12)$. By modifying the modulation analysis and using Strichartz estimates in place of pointwise bounds, we extend the result to the full energy-subcritical range $b\in(0,1)$. This strategy is expected to carry over to other dispersive equations with singular potentials.

Threshold solutions for the $3d$ cubic INLS: the energy-critical case

We study the energy-critical $3d$ cubic inhomogeneous NLS equation $i\partial_t u + Δu + |x|^{-1}|u|^2 u=0$. In this work, we prove the existence of special solutions $W^\pm$ with energy equal to that of the ground state $W$ and use these solutions to characterize the behavior of solutions at the ground state energy. The singular factor $|x|^{-1}$ in the nonlinearity significantly limits the smoothness of the ground state and prompts a novel approach to the modulation analysis.

Blow-up in finite or infinite time of the 2D cubic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation

We prove that near-threshold negative energy solutions to the 2D cubic ($L^2$-critical) focusing Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation blow-up in finite or infinite time. The proof consists of several steps. First, we show that if the blow-up conclusion is false, there are negative energy solutions arbitrarily close to the threshold that are globally bounded in $H^1$ and are spatially localized, uniformly in time. In the second step, we show that such solutions must in fact be exact remodulations of the ground state, and hence, have zero energy, which is a contradiction. This second step, a nonlinear Liouville theorem, is proved by contradiction, with a limiting argument producing a nontrivial solution to a (linear) linearized ZK equation obeying uniform-in-time spatial localization. Such nontrivial linear solutions are excluded by a local-viral space-time estimate. The general framework of the argument is modeled on Merle [29] and Martel & Merle [24], who treated the 1D problem of the $L^2$-critical gKdV equation. Several new features are introduced here to handle the 2D ZK case.

The focusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger system with power-type growth nonlinearities in the radial case

This work is concerned with a coupled system of focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations involving general power-type nonlinearities in the energy-critical setting for dimensions $3\leq d\leq 5$ in the radial setting. Our aim is to demonstrate the scattering versus blow-up dichotomy in the radial case. To achieve this, we first prove the existence of ground state solutions using the concentration-compactness method combined with variational techniques. We then establish finite-time blow-up through a convexity argument and prove scattering by applying the concentration-compactness and rigidity method.

Minimal mass blow-up solutions for a inhomogeneous NLS equation

We consider the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger (INLS) equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ \begin{align}\label{inls} i \partial_t u +Δu +V(x)|u|^{\frac{4-2b}{N}}u = 0, \end{align} where $V(x) = k(x)|x|^{-b}$, with $b>0$. Under suitable assumptions on $k(x)$, we established the threshold for global existence and blow-up and then study the existence and non-existence of minimal mass blow-up solutions.

Sharp well-posedness and ill-posedness results for the inhomogeneous NLS equation

We consider the initial value problem associated to the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrö\-din\-ger equation, \begin{equation} iu_t + Δu +μ|x|^{-b}|u|^αu=0, \quad u_0\in H^s(\mathbb R^N) \text{ or } u_0 \in\dot H ^s(\mathbb R^N), \end{equation} with $μ=\pm 1$, $b > 0$, $s\geq 0$ and $0 < α\leq \frac{4-2b}{N-2s}$. By means of an adapted version of the fractional Leibniz rule, we prove new local well-posedness results in Sobolev spaces for a large range of parameters. We also prove an ill-posedness result for this equation, through a delicate analysis of the associated Duhamel operator.

Blow-up for the 3D intercritical inhomogeneous NLS with inverse-square potential

In this paper we study the focusing inhomogeneous 3D nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse-square potential in the mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical regime. We first establish local well-posedness in $\dot{H}_a^{s_c}\cap \dot{H}_a^1$, with $s_c=3/2-(2-b)/2σ$. Next, we prove the blow-up of the scaling invariant Lebesgue norm for radial solutions and also, with an additional restriction, in the non-radial case.

Blow-up of non-radial solutions for the $L^2$ critical inhomogeneous NLS equation

We consider the $L^2$ critical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger (INLS) equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ $$ i \partial_t u +Δu +|x|^{-b} |u|^{\frac{4-2b}{N}}u = 0, $$ where $N\geq 1$ and $0<b<2$. We prove that if $u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ satisfies $E[u_0]<0$, then the corresponding solution blows-up in finite time. This is in sharp contrast to the classical $L^2$ critical NLS equation where this type of result is only known in the radial case for $N\geq 2$.

Blow-up solutions of the intercritical inhomogeneous NLS equation: the non-radial case

In this paper we consider the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger (INLS) equation \begin{align}\label{inls} i \partial_t u +Δu +|x|^{-b} |u|^{2σ}u = 0, \,\,\, x \in \mathbb{R}^N \end{align} with $N\geq 3$. We focus on the intercritical case, where the scaling invariant Sobolev index $s_c=\frac{N}{2}-\frac{2-b}{2σ}$ satisfies $0<s_c<1$. In a previous work, for radial initial data in $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1$, we prove the existence of blow-up solutions and also a lower bound for the blow-up rate. Here we extend these results to the non-radial case. We also prove an upper bound for the blow-up rate and a concentration result for general finite time blow-up solutions in $H^1$.

Blow-up of radial solutions for the intercritical inhomogeneous NLS equation

We consider the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger (INLS) equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ $$i \partial_t u +Δu +|x|^{-b} |u|^{2σ}u = 0,$$ where $N\geq 3$, $0 0$, then $\limsup_{t\rightarrow T^{\ast}}\|u(t)\|_{\dot H^{s_c}}=+\infty$. Moreover, under an additional assumption and recalling that $\dot{H}^{s_c} \subset L^{σ_c}$ with $σ_c=\frac{2Nσ}{2-b}$, we can in fact deduce, for some $γ=γ(N,σ,b)>0$, the following lower bound for the blow-up rate $$c\|u(t)\|_{\dot H^{s_c}}\geq \|u(t)\|_{L^{σ_c}}\geq |\log (T-t)|^γ,\,\,\,\mbox{ as }\,\,\,t\rightarrow T^{\ast}.$$ The proof is based on the ideas introduced for the $L^2$ super critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the work of Merle and Raphaël [13] and here we extend their results to the INLS setting.

Threshold solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We study the focusing NLS equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ in the mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical (or intercritical) regime, with $H^1$ data at the mass-energy threshold $ \mathcal{ME}(u_0)=\mathcal{ME}(Q)$, where $Q$ is the ground state. Previously, Duyckaerts-Merle studied the behavior of threshold solutions in the $H^1$-critical case, in dimensions $N = 3, 4, 5$, later generalized by Li-Zhang for higher dimensions. In the intercritical case, Duyckaerts-Roudenko studied the threshold problem for the 3d cubic NLS equation. In this paper, we generalize the results of Duyckaerts-Roudenko for any dimension and any power of the nonlinearity for the entire intecritical range. We show the existence of special solutions, $Q^\pm$, besides the standing wave $e^{it}Q$, which exponentially approach the standing wave in the positive time direction, but differ in its behavior for negative time. We classify all solutions at the threshold level, showing either blow-up occurs in finite (positive and negative) time, or scattering in both time directions, or the solution is equal to one of the three special solutions above, up to symmetries. Our proof extends to the $H^1$-critical case, thus, giving a different and more unified approach than the Li-Zhang result. These results are obtained by studying the linearized equation around the standing wave and some tailored approximate solutions to the NLS equation. We establish important decay properties of functions associated to the spectrum of the linearized Schrödinger operator, which, in combination with modulational stability and coercivity for the linearized operator on special subspaces, allows us to use a fixed-point argument to show the existence of special solutions. Finally, we prove the uniqueness by studying exponentially decaying solutions to a sequence of linearized equations.

Scattering below the ground state for the intercritical non-radial inhomogeneous NLS

We consider the focusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u + Δu + |x|^{-b}|u|^αu = 0\quad\text{on}\quad\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^N, \] with $N\geq 2$, $0<b<\min\{\tfrac{N}{2},2\}$, and $\tfrac{4-2b}{N}<α<\tfrac{4-2b}{N-2}$. These constraints make the equation mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical. We extend the results of Farah-Guzmán and Miao-Murphy-Zheng and prove scattering below the ground state with general initial data.

Asymptotic stability of solitary waves of the 3D quadratic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation

We consider the quadratic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation $$ \partial_t u + \partial_x Δu + \partial_x u^2 =0 $$ on $\mathbb{R}^3$. A solitary wave solution is given by $Q(x-t,y,z)$, where $Q$ is the ground state solution to $-Q + ΔQ + Q^2 =0$. We prove the asymptotic stability of these solitary wave solutions. Specifically, we show that initial data close to $Q$ in the energy space, evolves to a solution that, as $t\to\infty$, converges to a rescaling and shift of $Q(x-t,y,z)$ in $L^2$ in a rightward shifting region $x> δt -\tan θ\sqrt{y^2+z^2} $ for $0 \leq θ\leq \fracπ{3}-δ$.

On well-posedness and concentration of blow-up solutions for the intercritical inhomogeneous NLS equation

We consider the focusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger (INLS) equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ $$i \partial_t u +Δu + |x|^{-b} |u|^{2σ}u = 0,$$ where $N\geq 2$ and $σ$, $b>0$. We first obtain a small data global result in $H^1$, which, in the two spatial dimensional case, improves the third author result in [22] on the range of $b$. For $N\geq 3$ and $\frac{2-b}{N}<σ<\frac{2-b}{N-2}$, we also study the local well posedness in $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1 $, where $s_c=\frac{N}{2}-\frac{2-b}{2σ}$. Sufficient conditions for global existence of solutions in $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1$ are also established, using a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type estimate. Finally, we study the $L^{σ_c}-$norm concentration phenomenon, where $σ_c=\frac{2Nσ}{2-b}$, for finite time blow-up solutions in $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1$ with bounded $\dot H^{s_c}-$norm. Our approach is based on the compact embedding of $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1$ into a weighted $L^{2σ+2}$ space.

Global well-posedness for low regularity data in the 2d modified Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation

We consider the modified Zakharov-Kuznetsov (mZK) equation in two space dimensions in both focusing and defocusing cases. Using the $I$-method, we prove the global well-posedness of the $H^s$ solutions for $s>\frac{3}{4}$ for any data in the defocusing case and under the assumption that the mass of the initial data is less than the mass of the ground state solution of $Δφ- φ+ φ^3 = 0$ in the focusing case. This improves the global well-posedness result of Linares and Pastor [20].

Instability of solitons in the 2d cubic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation

We consider the two dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, $u_t + \partial_{x_1}(Δu + u^p) = 0, (x_1,x_2) \in \mathbb{R}^2$. It is known that solitons are stable for nonlinearities $p < 3$ and unstable for $p > 3$, which was established by Anne de Bouard in [5] generalizing the arguments of Bona-Souganidis-Strauss in [1] for the gKdV equation. The $L^2$-critical case with $p=3$ has been open and in this paper we prove that solitons are unstable in the cubic ZK equation. This matches the situation with the critical gKdV equation, proved in 2001 by Martel and Merle in [22]. While the general strategy follows [22], the two dimensional case creates several difficulties and to deal with them, we design a new virial-type quantity, revisit monotonicity properties and, most importantly, develop new pointwise decay estimates, which can be useful in other contexts.

Instability of solitons - revisited, I: the critical generalized KdV equation

We revisit the phenomenon of instability of solitons in the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation, $u_t + \partial_x(u_{xx} + u^p) = 0$. It is known that solitons are unstable for nonlinearities $p \geq 5$, with the critical power $p=5$ being the most challenging case to handle. The critical case was proved by Martel-Merle in [11], where the authors crucially relied on the pointwise decay estimates of the linear KdV flow. In this paper, we show simplified approaches to obtain the instability of solitons via truncation and monotonicity, which can be also useful for other KdV-type equations.
