State-dependent Gaussian gate set using an optical tweezer for trapped ions

We demonstrate a state-dependent Gaussian gate set on the motional modes of trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions, realized with an optical tweezer. Dynamic control of the tweezer intensity and position enables local displacement, squeezing, phase-space rotation, and beamsplitter operations, constituting a complete gate set. By varying the tweezer position relative to the ion, we show how the strength of each operation is set by the corresponding spatial derivative of the local optical potential. We further demonstrate the inherent dependence of each operation on the ion's internal state and use coherent spin-motion coupling provided by the tweezer to create a motional cat state. Our work establishes optical tweezers as a unified and local resource for continuous-variable quantum control in trapped ion systems.

Direct observation of the optical Magnus effect with a trapped ion

We directly observe and spatially map an optical analog of the Magnus effect, where intrinsic spin-orbit-like coupling of light generates a spin-dependent transverse displacement of the atom-light interaction profile for a $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion. Probed on a quadrupole transition using a tightly focused beam, we observe displacements of the maximum in the profile of the effective interaction by several 100 nm originating from intrinsic longitudinal electric field components beyond the paraxial approximation. The tight focus of the beam induces additional transverse polarization gradients, which we characterize through a phase-sensitive measurement and spatial maps for different beam configurations. The results establish the physical basis of polarization-gradient interactions relevant to optical tweezer-based quantum control.

Active Stabilization of Laser Diode Injection Using a Polarization-Spectroscopy Technique

Laser diode injection-locking is a commonly used method to amplify laser light, while preserving its spectral properties. Fluctuations in the environmental conditions can cause injection-locking to fail, especially when operating with low seed powers or with a swept seed frequency. We present a method inspired by the H\"ansch-Couillaud scheme to monitor and actively stabilize the conditions required for injection-locking a laser diode. Using only a few optical components, our scheme can run continuously in the background and is modulation-free. We demonstrate its efficacy by showing its robustness to large fluctuations in diode temperature, seed frequency and power, effectively extending the reliable operating range and stability over time.

Fast multiplexed superconducting qubit readout with intrinsic Purcell filtering

Fast and accurate qubit measurement remains a critical challenge on the path to fault-tolerant quantum computing. In superconducting quantum circuits, fast qubit measurement has been achieved using a dispersively coupled resonator with a large external linewidth. This necessitates the use of a Purcell filter that protects the qubit from relaxation through the readout channel. Here we show that a readout resonator and filter resonator, coupled to each other both capacitively and inductively, can produce a compact notch-filter circuit that effectively eliminates the Purcell decay channel through destructive interference. By utilizing linewidths as large as 42 MHz, we perform 56-ns simultaneous readout of four qubits and benchmark an average assignment fidelity of 99.77%, with the highest qubit assignment fidelity exceeding 99.9%. These results demonstrate a significant advancement in speed and fidelity for multiplexed superconducting qubit readout.
