Statistical periodicity in driven quantum systems: General formalism and application to noisy Floquet topological chains

Much recent experimental effort has focused on the realization of exotic quantum states and dynamics predicted to occur in periodically driven systems. But how robust are the sought-after features, such as Floquet topological surface states, against unavoidable imperfections in the periodic driving? In this work, we address this question in a broader context and study the dynamics of quantum systems subject to noise with periodically recurring statistics. We show that the stroboscopic time evolution of such systems is described by a noise-averaged Floquet superoperator. The eigenvectors and -values of this superoperator generalize the familiar concepts of Floquet states and quasienergies and allow us to describe decoherence due to noise efficiently. Applying the general formalism to the example of a noisy Floquet topological chain, we re-derive and corroborate our recent findings on the noise-induced decay of topologically protected end states. These results follow directly from an expansion of the end state in eigenvectors of the Floquet superoperator.

Probing scrambling using statistical correlations between randomized measurements

We propose and analyze a protocol to study quantum information scrambling using statistical correlations between measurements, which are performed after evolving a quantum system from randomized initial states. We prove that the resulting correlations precisely capture the so-called out-of-time-ordered correlators and can be used to probe chaos in strongly-interacting, many-body systems. Our protocol requires neither reversing time evolution nor auxiliary degrees of freedom, and can be realized in state-of-the-art quantum simulation experiments.

Programmable Superpositions of Ising Configurations

We present a framework to prepare superpositions of bit strings, i.e., many-body spin configurations, with deterministic programmable probabilities. The spin configurations are encoded in the degenerate ground states of the lattice-gauge representation of an all-to-all connected Ising spin glass. The ground state manifold is invariant under variations of the gauge degrees of freedom, which take the form of four-body parity constraints. Our framework makes use of these degrees of freedom by individually tuning them to dynamically prepare programmable superpositions. The dynamics combines an adiabatic protocol with controlled diabatic transitions. We derive an effective model that allows one to determine the control parameters efficiently even for large system sizes.

Topological Defects in Anisotropic Driven Open Systems

We study the dynamics and unbinding transition of vortices in the compact anisotropic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation. The combination of non-equilibrium conditions and strong spatial anisotropy drastically affects the structure of vortices and amplifies their mutual binding forces, thus stabilizing the ordered phase. We find novel universal critical behavior in the vortex-unbinding crossover in finite-size systems. These results are relevant for a wide variety of physical systems, ranging from strongly coupled light-matter quantum systems to dissipative time crystals.

Space-time vortex driven crossover and vortex turbulence phase transition in one-dimensional driven open condensates

We find a first order transition driven by the strength of non-equilibrium conditions of one-dimensional driven open condensates. Associated with this transition is a new stable non-equilibrium phase, space-time vortex turbulence, whose vortex density and quasiparticle distribution show strongly non-thermal behavior. Below the transition, we identify a new time scale associated with noise activated unbound space-time vortices, beyond which the temporal coherence function changes from a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang type subexponential to a disordered exponential decay. Experimental realization of the non-equilibrium vortex turbulent phase is facilitated in driven open condensates with a large diffusion rate.

Scaling properties of one-dimensional driven-dissipative condensates

We numerically investigate the scaling properties of a one-dimensional driven-dissipative condensate described by a stochastic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (SCGLE). We directly extract the static and dynamical scaling exponents from the dynamics of the condensate's phase field, and find that both coincide with the ones of the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation. We furthermore calculate the spatial and the temporal two-point correlation functions of the condensate field itself. The decay of the temporal two-point correlator assumes a stretched-exponential form, providing further quantitative evidence for an effective KPZ description. Moreover, we confirm the observability of this non-equilibrium scaling for typical current experimental setups with exciton-polariton systems, if cavities with a reduced $Q$ factor are used.

Two-dimensional superfluidity of exciton-polaritons requires strong anisotropy

Fluids of exciton-polaritons, excitations of two dimensional quantum wells in optical cavities, show collective phenomena akin to Bose condensation. However, a fundamental difference from standard condensates stems from the finite life-time of these excitations, which necessitate continuous driving to maintain a steady state. A basic question is whether a two dimensional condensate with long range algebraic correlations can exist under these non-equilibrium conditions. Here we show that such driven two-dimensional Bose systems cannot exhibit algebraic superfluid order except in low-symmetry, anisotropic systems. Our result implies, in particular, that recent apparent evidence for Bose condensation of exciton-polaritons must be an intermediate scale crossover phenomenon, while the true long distance correlations fall off exponentially. We obtain these results through a mapping of the long-wavelength condensate dynamics onto the anisotropic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.
