The Cesàro Value Iteration

In this paper, we consider undiscouted infinite-horizon optimal control for deterministic systems with an uncountable state and input space. We specifically address the case when the classic value iteration does not converge. For such systems, we use the Ces`aro mean to define the infinite-horizon optimal control problem and the corresponding infinite-horizon value function. Moreover, for this value function, we introduce the Cesàro value iteration and prove its convergence for the special case of systems with periodic optimal operating behavior. For this instance, we also show that the Cesàro value function recovers the undiscounted infinite-horizon optimal cost, if the latter is well-defined.

On stability and non-averaged performance of economic MPC with terminal conditions for optimal periodic operation

Operation at steady state is often not optimal when optimizing over an economic cost objective. In many cases, periodic operation yields better performance. Therefore, we derive asymptotic stability guarantees of an economic model predictive control scheme with terminal conditions for systems with optimal periodic operation for a more general setup than existing methods can handle. Moreover, we establish a non-averaged closed-loop performance bound by defining the closed-loop cost via a Cesàro summation instead of ordinary summation. Such a non-averaged performance bound provides new insights for systems with periodic optimal operation.

Output-feedback model predictive control under dynamic uncertainties using integral quadratic constraints

In this work, we propose an output-feedback tube-based model predictive control (MPC) scheme for linear systems under dynamic uncertainties that are described via integral quadratic constraints (IQC). By leveraging IQCs, a large class of nonlinear and dynamic uncertainties can be addressed. We leverage recent IQC synthesis tools to design a dynamic controller and an estimator that are robust to these uncertainties and minimize the size of the resulting constraint tightening in the MPC. Thereby, we show that the robust estimation problem using IQCs with peak-to-peak performance can be convexified. We guarantee recursive feasibility, robust constraint satisfaction, and input-to-state stability of the resulting MPC scheme.

Multi-objective robust controller synthesis with integral quadratic constraints in discrete-time

This article presents a novel framework for the robust controller synthesis problem in discrete-time systems using dynamic Integral Quadratic Constraints (IQCs). We present an algorithm to minimize closed-loop performance measures such as the $\mathcal H_\infty$-norm, the energy-to-peak gain, the peak-to-peak gain, or a multi-objective mix thereof. While IQCs provide a powerful tool for modeling structured uncertainties and nonlinearities, existing synthesis methods are limited to the $\mathcal H_\infty$-norm, continuous-time systems, or special system structures. By minimizing the energy-to-peak and peak-to-peak gain, the proposed synthesis can be utilized to bound the peak of the output, which is crucial in many applications requiring robust constraint satisfaction, input-to-state stability, reachability analysis, or other pointwise-in-time bounds. Numerical examples demonstrate the robustness and performance of the controllers synthesized with the proposed algorithm.

On discount functions for economic model predictive control without terminal conditions

In this paper, we investigate discounted economic model predictive control (E-MPC) schemes without terminal conditions in scenarios where the optimal operating behavior is a periodic orbit. For such a setting, it is known that a linearly discounted stage cost guarantees asymptotic stability of any arbitrarily small neighborhood of the optimal orbit if the prediction horizon is sufficiently long. However, in some examples very long prediction horizons are needed to achieve the desired performance. In this work, we extend these results by providing the same qualitative stability guarantees for a large class of discount functions. Numerical examples illustrate the influence of the discount function and show that with suitable discounting we can achieve significantly better performance than the linearly discounted E-MPC, even for short prediction horizons.

Stability Mechanisms for Predictive Safety Filters

Predictive safety filters enable the integration of potentially unsafe learning-based control approaches and humans into safety-critical systems. In addition to simple constraint satisfaction, many control problems involve additional stability requirements that may vary depending on the specific use case or environmental context. In this work, we address this problem by augmenting predictive safety filters with stability guarantees, ranging from bounded convergence to uniform asymptotic stability. The proposed framework extends well-known stability results from model predictive control (MPC) theory while supporting commonly used design techniques. As a result, straightforward extensions to dynamic trajectory tracking problems can be easily adapted, as outlined in this article. The practicality of the framework is demonstrated using an automotive advanced driver assistance scenario, involving a reference trajectory stabilization problem.

Linearly discounted economic MPC without terminal conditions for periodic optimal operation

In this work, we study economic model predictive control (MPC) in situations where the optimal operating behavior is periodic. In such a setting, the performance of a standard economic MPC scheme without terminal conditions can generally be far from optimal even with arbitrarily long prediction horizons. Whereas there are modified economic MPC schemes that guarantee optimal performance, all of them are based on prior knowledge of the optimal period length or of the optimal periodic orbit itself. In contrast to these approaches, we propose to achieve optimality by multiplying the stage cost by a linear discount factor. This modification is not only easy to implement but also independent of any system- or cost-specific properties, making the scheme robust against online changes therein. Under standard dissipativity and controllability assumptions, we can prove that the resulting linearly discounted economic MPC without terminal conditions achieves optimal asymptotic average performance up to an error that vanishes with growing prediction horizons. Moreover, we can guarantee practical asymptotic stability of the optimal periodic orbit under the additional technical assumption that dissipativity holds with a continuous storage function. We complement these qualitative guarantees with a quantitative analysis of the transient and asymptotic average performance of the linearly discounted MPC scheme in a numerical simulation study.

Robust peak-to-peak gain analysis using integral quadratic constraints

This work provides a framework to compute an upper bound on the robust peak-to-peak gain of discrete-time uncertain linear systems using integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). Such bounds are of particular interest in the computation of reachable sets and the $\ell_1$-norm, as well as when safety-critical constraints need to be satisfied pointwise in time. The use of $ρ$-hard IQCs with a terminal cost enables us to deal with a wide variety of uncertainty classes, for example, we provide $ρ$-hard IQCs with a terminal cost for the class of parametric uncertainties. This approach unifies, generalizes, and significantly improves state-of-the-art methods, which is also demonstrated in a numerical example.

Transient Performance of Tube-based Robust Economic Model Predictive Control

In this paper, we provide non-averaged and transient performance guarantees for recently developed, tube-based robust economic model predictive control (MPC) schemes. In particular, we consider both tube-based MPC schemes with and without terminal conditions. We show that the closed-loop performance obtained by applying such MPC schemes is approximately optimal when evaluated both on finite and infinite time horizons. These performance bounds are similar to those derived previously for nominal economic MPC. The theoretical results are discussed in a numerical example.

Model predictive control for linear uncertain systems using integral quadratic constraints

In this work, we propose a tube-based MPC scheme for state- and input-constrained linear systems subject to dynamic uncertainties characterized by dynamic integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). In particular, we extend the framework of $ρ$-hard IQCs for exponential stability analysis to external inputs. This result yields that the error between the true uncertain system and the nominal prediction model is bounded by an exponentially stable scalar system. In the proposed tube-based MPC scheme, the state of this error bounding system is predicted along with the nominal model and used as a scaling parameter for the tube size. We prove that this method achieves robust constraint satisfaction and input-to-state stability despite dynamic uncertainties and additive bounded disturbances. A numerical example demonstrates the reduced conservatism of this IQC approach compared to state-of-the-art robust MPC approaches for dynamic uncertainties.

Robust and optimal predictive control of the COVID-19 outbreak

We investigate adaptive strategies to robustly and optimally control the COVID-19 pandemic via social distancing measures based on the example of Germany. Our goal is to minimize the number of fatalities over the course of two years without inducing excessive social costs. We consider a tailored model of the German COVID-19 outbreak with different parameter sets to design and validate our approach. Our analysis reveals that an open-loop optimal control policy can significantly decrease the number of fatalities when compared to simpler policies under the assumption of exact model knowledge. In a more realistic scenario with uncertain data and model mismatch, a feedback strategy that updates the policy weekly using model predictive control (MPC) leads to a reliable performance, even when applied to a validation model with deviant parameters. On top of that, we propose a robust MPC-based feedback policy using interval arithmetic that adapts the social distancing measures cautiously and safely, thus leading to a minimum number of fatalities even if measurements are inaccurate and the infection rates cannot be precisely specified by social distancing. Our theoretical findings support various recent studies by showing that 1) adaptive feedback strategies are required to reliably contain the COVID-19 outbreak, 2) well-designed policies can significantly reduce the number of fatalities compared to simpler ones while keeping the amount of social distancing measures on the same level, and 3) imposing stronger social distancing measures early on is more effective and cheaper in the long run than opening up too soon and restoring stricter measures at a later time.

Online learning with stability guarantees: A memory-based real-time model predictive controller

We propose and analyze a real-time model predictive control (MPC) scheme that utilizes stored data to improve its performance by learning the value function online with stability guarantees. For linear and nonlinear systems, a learning method is presented that makes use of basic analytic properties of the cost function and is proven to learn the MPC control law and the value function on the limit set of the closed-loop state trajectory. The main idea is to generate a smart warm start based on historical data that improves future data points and thus future warm starts. We show that these warm starts are asymptotically exact and converge to the solution of the MPC optimization problem. Thereby, the suboptimality of the applied control input resulting from the real-time requirements vanishes over time. Simulative examples show that existing real-time MPC schemes can be improved by storing data and the proposed learning scheme.

Robust Economic Model Predictive Control without Terminal Conditions

In this paper, a novel tube-based economic Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme for uncertain systems that uses neither terminal costs nor terminal constraints is investigated. We show that the results from the undisturbed case can be extended to systems with bounded disturbances by using similar turnpike arguments and a properly modified stage cost. We prove robust guarantees on the closed-loop performance, convergence, and stability under suitable dissipativity and controllability conditions and discuss them in a numerical example.
