Study of Multiuser Scheduling Based on User Satisfaction for MU-MIMO Systems

Scheduling in multiuser multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) systems is essential for efficient resource allocation and overall performance enhancement. In this work, a multiuser scheduling problem is formulated to maximize the product of user equipments' (UEs) aggregate satisfactions, which maintains user fairness. Solving such a combinatorial problem using exhaustive search (EX), which requires evaluating all possible multiuser groups within a massive number of resource blocks (RBs), is prohibitive. Instead, we propose an efficient users' satisfaction based scheduling approach (US-SA). In our US-SA, a low dimension sub-grouping matrix is constructed {at each frame}, which is used to schedule the best multiuser group in each time slot; satisfied users are eliminated from the scheduling process. Our US-SA performs close to the optimal EX method in terms of satisfaction, transmitted data amount, spectral efficiency, latency, and fairness with lower computational cost. Moreover, our experiments demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms competing techniques.

Power Minimization under Quality of Service Constraints for MIMO Systems with a RIS-based Transmitter

This study investigates a virtual multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system with PSK modulation, realized with a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-based transmitter. The study focuses on minimizing transmit power under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints while addressing the associated computational complexity. A discrete phase-shift RIS model is considered, and the power minimization problem is formulated in two scenarios. First, for QPSK user data, the symbol-error probability (SEP) is adopted as the QoS criterion. Second, for general $M$-PSK modulation, the union-bound SEP (UBSEP) is used to define the QoS constraints. Based on the considered formulations, a partial branch-and-bound (PBB) approach is developed, which improves on full branch-and-bound (FBB) methods in the sense of allowing for favorable complexity performance trade-offs. For the special case of high-resolution RIS, the discrete phase-shift set is approximated by its continuous counterpart, enabling the reformulation of the original problems as constrained optimizations on an oblique manifold, which are solved with reduced computational complexity with the proposed bisection method. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches in minimizing the transmit power for different SEP requirements and showcase the balance between power efficiency and computational complexity

Symbol-Error Probability Constrained Power Minimization for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-based Passive Transmitter

This study considers a virtual multiuser multiple-input multiple-output system with PSK modulation realized via the reconfigurable intelligent surface-based passive transmitter setup. Under this framework, the study derives the formulation for the union-bound symbol-error probability, which is an upper bound on the actual symbol-error probability. Based on this, a symbol-level precoding power minimization problem under the condition that the union-bound symbol-error probability is below a given requirement is proposed. The problem is formulated as a constrained optimization on an oblique manifold, and solved via a bisection method. The method consists of successively optimizing transmit power while evaluating the feasibility of the union-bound symbol-error probability requisite by solving, via the Riemannian conjugate gradient algorithm, an auxiliary problem dependent only on the reflection coefficients of the reconfigurable intelligent surface elements. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in minimizing the transmit power for different symbol-error probability requirements.

State Machine-based Waveforms for Channels With 1-Bit Quantization and Oversampling With Time-Instance Zero-Crossing Modulation

Systems with 1-bit quantization and oversampling are promising for the Internet of Things (IoT) devices in order to reduce the power consumption of the analog-to-digital-converters. The novel time-instance zero-crossing (TI ZX) modulation is a promising approach for this kind of channels but existing studies rely on optimization problems with high computational complexity and delay. In this work, we propose a practical waveform design based on the established TI ZX modulation for a multiuser multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink scenario with 1-bit quantization and temporal oversampling at the receivers. In this sense, the proposed temporal transmit signals are constructed by concatenating segments of coefficients which convey the information into the time-instances of zero-crossings according to the TI ZX mapping rules. The proposed waveform design is compared with other methods from the literature. The methods are compared in terms of bit error rate and normalized power spectral density. Numerical results show that the proposed technique is suitable for multiuser MIMO system with 1-bit quantization while tolerating some small amount of out-of-band radiation.

Multiuser-MIMO Systems Using Comparator Network-Aided Receivers With 1-Bit Quantization

Low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are promising for reducing energy consumption and costs of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with many antennas. We propose low-resolution multiuser MIMO receivers where the signals are simultaneously processed by 1-bit ADCs and a comparator network, which can be interpreted as additional virtual channels with binary outputs. We distinguish the proposed comparator networks in fully and partially connected. For such receivers, we develop the low-resolution aware linear minimum mean-squared error (LRA-LMMSE) channel estimator and detector according to the Bussgang theorem. We also develop a robust detector which takes into account the channel state information (CSI) mismatch statistics. By exploiting knowledge of the channel coefficients we devise a mean-square error (MSE) greedy search and a sequential signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) search for optimization of partially connected networks. Numerical results show that a system with extra virtual channels can outperform a system with additional receive antennas, in terms of bit error rate (BER). Furthermore, by employing the proposed channel estimation with its error statistics, we construct a lower bound on the ergodic sum rate for a linear receiver. Simulation results confirm that the proposed approach outperforms the conventional 1-bit MIMO system in terms of BER, MSE and sum rate.

MMSE Symbol Level Precoding Under a Per Antenna Power Constraint for Multiuser MIMO Systems With PSK Modulation

This study proposes a symbol-level precoding algorithm based on the minimum mean squared error design objective under a strict per antenna power constraint for PSK modulation. The proposed design is then formulated in the standard form of a second-order cone program, allowing for an optimal solution via the interior point method. Numerical results indicate that the proposed design is superior to the existing approaches in terms of bit-error-rate for the low and intermediate SNR regime.

Minimum Symbol Error Probability Low-Resolution Precoding for MU-MIMO Systems With PSK Modulation

We propose an optimal low-resolution precoding technique that minimizes the symbol error probability of the users. Unlike existing approaches that rely on QPSK modulation, for the derivation of the minimum symbol error probability objective function the current approach allows for any PSK modulation order. Moreover, the proposed method solves the corresponding discrete optimization problem optimally via a sophisticated branch-and-bound method. Moreover, we propose different approaches based on the greedy search method to compute practical solutions. Numerical simulations confirm the superiority of the proposed minimum symbol error probability criteria in terms of symbol error rate when compared with the established MMDDT and MMSE approaches.

Discrete MMSE Precoding for Multiuser MIMO Systems with PSK Modulation

We propose an optimal MMSE precoding technique using quantized signals with constant envelope. Unlike the existing MMSE design that relies on 1-bit resolution, the proposed approach employs uniform phase quantization and the bounding step in the branch-and-bound method is different in terms of considering the most restrictive relaxation of the nonconvex problem, which is then utilized for a suboptimal design also. Moreover, unlike prior studies, we propose three different soft detection methods and an iterative detection and decoding scheme that allow the utilization of channel coding in conjunction with low-resolution precoding. Besides an exact approach for computing the extrinsic information, we propose two approximations with reduced computational complexity. Numerical simulations show that utilizing the MMSE criterion instead of the established maximum-minimum distance to the decision threshold yields a lower bit-error-rate in many scenarios. Furthermore, when using the MMSE criterion, a smaller number of bound evaluations in the branch-and-bound method is required for low and medium SNR. Finally, results based on an LDPC block code indicate that the receive processing schemes yield a lower bit-error-rate compared to the conventional design.

Iterative Detection and Decoding for Multiuser MIMO Systems with Low Resolution Precoding and PSK Modulation

Low-resolution precoding techniques have gained considerable attention in the wireless communications area recently. Vital but hardly discussed in literature, discrete precoding in conjunction with channel coding is the subject of this study. Unlike prior studies, we propose three different soft detection methods and an iterative detection and decoding scheme that allow the utilization of channel coding in conjunction with low-resolution precoding. Besides an exact approach for computing the extrinsic information, we propose two approximations with reduced computational complexity. Numerical results based on PSK modulation and an LDPC block code indicate a superior performance as compared to the system design based on the common AWGN channel model in terms of bit-error-rate.

Continuous Phase Modulation With 1-Bit Quantization and Oversampling Using Iterative Detection and Decoding

A channel with continuous phase modulation and 1-bit ADC with oversampling is considered. Due to oversampling, higher-order modulations yield a higher achievable rate and this work presents a method to approach this with sophisticated coding. A tailored bit mapping is proposed where two bits can be detected reliably at high SNR and only the third bit suffers from an error floor. With this, a convolutional code is only applied to the third bit. Our experiments with a turbo receiver show that the proposed method corresponds to a lower BER in comparison to the case of conventional channel coding.

Zero-Crossing Precoding With Maximum Distance to the Decision Threshold for Channels With 1-Bit Quantization and Oversampling

Low-resolution devices are promising for systems that demand low energy consumption and low complexity as required in IoT systems. In this study, we propose a novel waveform for bandlimited channels with 1-bit quantization and oversampling at the receivers. The proposed method implies that the information is conveyed within the time instances of zero-crossings which is then utilized in combination with a Gray-coding scheme. Unlike the existing method, the proposed method does not require optimization and transmission of a dynamic codebook. The proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art method in terms of bit error rate.

Continuous Phase Modulation With Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling for Channels With 1-bit Quantization and Oversampling at the Receiver

Continuous phase modulation (CPM) with 1-bit quantization at the receiver is promising in terms of energy and spectral efficiency. In this study, CPM waveforms with symbol durations significantly shorter than the inverse of the signal bandwidth are proposed, termed faster-than-Nyquist CPM. This configuration provides a better steering of zero-crossings as compared to conventional CPM. Numerical results confirm a superior performance in terms of BER in comparison with state-of-the-art methods, while having the same spectral efficiency and a lower oversampling factor. Moreover, the new waveform can be detected with low-complexity, which yields almost the same performance as using the BCJR algorithm.

Optimal Precoding for Multiuser MIMO Systems With Phase Quantization and PSK Modulation via Branch-and-Bound

MIMO systems are considered as most promising for wireless communications. However, with an increasing number of radio front ends the corresponding energy consumption and costs become an issue, which can be relieved by the utilization of low-resolution quantizers. In this study we propose an optimal precoding algorithm constrained to constant envelope signals and phase quantization that maximizes the minimum distance to the decision threshold at the receivers using a branch-and-bound strategy. The proposed algorithm is superior to the existing methods in terms of bit error rate. Numerical results show that the proposed approach has significantly lower complexity than exhaustive search.

Branch-and-Bound Precoding for Multiuser MIMO Systems with 1-Bit Quantization

Multiple-antenna systems is a key technique to serve multiple users in future wireless systems. For low energy consumption and hardware complexity we first consider transmit symbols with constant magnitude and then 1-bit digital-to-analog converters. We propose precoding designs which maximize the minimum distance to the decision threshold at the receiver. The precoding design with 1-bit DAC corresponds to a discrete optimization problem, which we solve exactly with a branch-and-bound strategy. We alternatively present an approximation based on relaxation. Our results show that the proposed branch-and-bound approach has polynomial complexity. The proposed methods outperform existing precoding methods with 1-bit DAC in terms of uncoded bit error rate and sum-rate. The performance loss in comparison to infinite DAC resolution is small.
