Distributional Convergence of the Empirical Laplacians with Integral Kernels on Domains with Boundaries

Motivated by the problem of understanding theoretical bounds for the performance of the Belkin-Niyogi Laplacian eigencoordinate approach to dimension reduction in machine learning problems, we consider the convergence of random graph Laplacian operators to a Laplacian-type operator on a manifold. For $\{X_j\}$ i.i.d.\ random variables taking values in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $K$ a kernel with suitable integrability we define random graph Laplacians \begin{equation*} D_{\epsilon,n}f(p)=\frac{1}{n\epsilon^{d+2}}\sum_{j=1}^nK\left(\frac{p-X_j}{\epsilon}\right)(f(X_j)-f(p)) \end{equation*} and study their convergence as $\epsilon=\epsilon_n\to0$ and $n\to\infty$ to a second order elliptic operator of the form \begin{align*} \Delta_K f(p) &= \sum_{i,j=1}^d\frac{\partial f}{\partial x_i}(p)\frac{\partial g}{\partial x_j}(p)\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}K(-t)t_it_jd\lambda(t)\\ &\quad +\frac{g(p)}{2}\sum_{i,j=1}^d\frac{\partial^2f}{\partial x_i\partial x_j}(p)\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}K(-t)t_it_jd\lambda(t). \end{align*} Our results provide conditions that guarantee that $D_{\epsilon_n,n}f(p)-\Delta_Kf(p)$ converges to zero in probability as $n\to\infty$ and can be rescaled by $\sqrt{n\epsilon_n^{d+2}}$ to satisfy a central limit theorem. They generalize the work of Gin\'e--Koltchinskii~\cite{gine2006empirical} and Belkin--Niyogi~\cite{belkin2008towards} to allow manifolds with boundary and a wider choice of kernels $K$, and to prove convergence under weaker smoothness assumptions and a correspondingly more precise choice of conditions on the asymptotics of $\epsilon_n$ as $n\to\infty$.

Convergence, optimization and stability of singular eigenmaps

Eigenmaps are important in analysis, geometry, and machine learning, especially in nonlinear dimension reduction. Approximation of the eigenmaps of a Laplace operator depends crucially on the scaling parameter $\epsilon$. If $\epsilon$ is too small or too large, then the approximation is inaccurate or completely breaks down. However, an analytic expression for the optimal $\epsilon$ is out of reach. In our work, we use some explicitly solvable models and Monte Carlo simulations to find the approximately optimal range of $\epsilon$ that gives, on average, relatively accurate approximation of the eigenmaps. Numerically we can consider several model situations where eigen-coordinates can be computed analytically, including intervals with uniform and weighted measures, squares, tori, spheres, and the Sierpinski gasket. In broader terms, we intend to study eigen-coordinates on weighted Riemannian manifolds, possibly with boundary, and on some metric measure spaces, such as fractals.

Gaps labeling theorem for the Bubble-diamond self-similar graphs

Motivated by the appearance of fractals in several areas of physics, especially in solid state physics and the physics of aperiodic order, and in other sciences, including the quantum information theory, we present a detailed spectral analysis for a new class of fractal-type diamond graphs, referred to as bubble-diamond graphs, and provide a gap-labeling theorem in the sense of Bellissard for the corresponding probabilistic graph Laplacians using the technique of spectral decimation. Labeling the gaps in the Cantor set by the normalized eigenvalue counting function, also known as the integrated density of states, we describe the gap labels as orbits of a second dynamical system that reflects the branching parameter of the bubble construction and the decimation structure. The spectrum of the natural Laplacian on limit graphs is shown generically to be pure point supported on a Cantor set, though one particular graph has a mixture of pure point and singularly continuous components.

Besov class via heat semigroup on Dirichlet spaces I: Sobolev type inequalities

We introduce heat semigroup-based Besov classes in the general framework of Dirichlet spaces. General properties of those classes are studied and quantitative regularization estimates for the heat semigroup in this scale of spaces are obtained. As a highlight of the paper, we obtain a far reaching $L^p$-analogue, $p \ge 1$, of the Sobolev inequality that was proved for $p=2$ by N. Varopoulos under the assumption of ultracontractivity for the heat semigroup. The case $p=1$ is of special interest since it yields isoperimetric type inequalities.

BV functions and fractional Laplacians on Dirichlet spaces

We study $L^p$ Besov critical exponents and isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities associated with fractional Laplacians on metric measure spaces. The main tool is the theory of heat semigroup based Besov classes in Dirichlet spaces that was introduced by the authors in previous works.

Besov class via heat semigroup on Dirichlet spaces III: BV functions and sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates

With a view toward fractal spaces, by using a Korevaar-Schoen space approach, we introduce the class of bounded variation (BV) functions in a general framework of strongly local Dirichlet spaces with a heat kernel satisfying sub-Gaussian estimates. Under a weak Bakry-\'Emery curvature type condition, which is new in this setting, this BV class is identified with a heat semigroup based Besov class. As a consequence of this identification, properties of BV functions and associated BV measures are studied in detail. In particular, we prove co-area formulas, global $L^1$ Sobolev embeddings and isoperimetric inequalities. It is shown that for nested fractals or their direct products the BV class we define is dense in $L^1$. The examples of the unbounded Vicsek set, unbounded Sierpinski gasket and unbounded Sierpinski carpet are discussed.

Besov class via heat semigroup on Dirichlet spaces II: BV functions and Gaussian heat kernel estimates

We introduce the class of bounded variation (BV) functions in a general framework of strictly local Dirichlet spaces with doubling measure. Under the 2-Poincar\'e inequality and a weak Bakry-\'Emery curvature type condition, this BV class is identified with the heat semigroup based Besov class $\mathbf{B}^{1,1/2}(X)$ that was introduced in our previous paper. Assuming furthermore a quasi Bakry-\'Emery curvature type condition, we identify the Sobolev class $W^{1,p}(X)$ with $\mathbf{B}^{p,1/2}(X)$ for $p>1$. Consequences of those identifications in terms of isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities with sharp exponents are given.

Magnetic fields on resistance spaces

On a metric measure space $X$ that supports a regular, strongly local resistance form we consider a magnetic energy form that corresponds to the magnetic Laplacian for a particle confined to $X$. We provide sufficient conditions for closability and self-adjointness in terms of geometric conditions on the reference measure without assuming energy dominance.

Complex Powers of the Laplacian on Affine Nested Fractals as Calderón-Zygmund operators

We give the first natural examples of Calderón-Zygmund operators in the theory of analysis on post-critically finite self-similar fractals. This is achieved by showing that the purely imaginary Riesz and Bessel potentials on nested fractals with 3 or more boundary points are of this type. It follows that these operators are bounded on $L^{p}$, $1<p<\infty$ and satisfy weak 1-1 bounds. The analysis may be extended to infinite blow-ups of these fractals, and to product spaces based on the fractal or its blow-up.

Unimodular Fourier multipliers for modulation spaces

We investigate the boundedness of unimodular Fourier multipliers on modulation spaces. Surprisingly, the multipliers with general symbol $e^{i|ξ|^α}$, where $α\in[0, 2]$, are bounded on all modulation spaces, but, in general, fail to be bounded on the usual $L^p$-spaces. As a consequence, the phase-space concentration of the solutions to the free Schrödinger and wave equations are preserved. As a byproduct, we also obtain boundedness results on modulation spaces for singular multipliers $|ξ|^{-δ} \sin (|ξ|^α)$ for $ 0 \leq δ\leq α$.
