Residual-Controlled Multiplier Learning for Stochastic Constrained Decision-Making

Stochastic constrained decision-making requires optimizing performance objectives while enforcing statistical requirements such as safety or fairness. However, standard primal--dual methods struggle to update multipliers robustly under stochastic mini-batch feedback, as the noise of mini-batch gradients and constraint estimates can be directly accumulated into the multiplier memory. To address this issue, we propose Residual-Controlled Multiplier Learning (RCML), which reformulates multiplier updating as projected-pressure feedback. The central idea is to decompose the projected multiplier into an effective pressure signal for primal descent and a pressure-memory residual for finite-gain multiplier tracking. To handle heterogeneous and noisy observations, we further augment this residual-integral backbone with modular stochastic stabilization components. For the convex-affine backbone, we establish finite-gain convergence, derive a stochastic residual bound under mini-batch feedback, and show that the residual feedback law admits a local KKT-residual interpretation near regular KKT points of nonconvex problems. Experiments across optimization, allocation, and fair-ranking tasks show that RCML improves feasibility control and multiplier stability while maintaining competitive objective performance. Representation Learning Enhanced Deep Reinforcement Learning for Optimal Operation of Hydrogen-based Multi-Energy Systems

Hydrogen-based multi-energy systems (HMES) have emerged as a promising low-carbon and energy-efficient solution, as it can enable the coordinated operation of electricity, heating and cooling supply and demand to enhance operational flexibility, improve overall energy efficiency, and increase the share of renewable integration. However, the optimal operation of HMES remains challenging due to the nonlinear and multi-physics coupled dynamics of hydrogen energy storage systems (HESS) (consisting of electrolyters, fuel cells and hydrogen tanks) as well as the presence of multiple uncertainties from supply and demand. To address these challenges, this paper develops a comprehensive operational model for HMES that fully captures the nonlinear dynamics and multi-physics process of HESS. Moreover, we propose an enhanced deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework by integrating the emerging representation learning techniques, enabling substantially accelerated and improved policy optimization for spatially and temporally coupled complex networked systems, which is not provided by conventional DRL. Experimental studies based on real-world datasets show that the comprehensive model is crucial to ensure the safe and reliable of HESS. In addition, the proposed SR-DRL approaches demonstrate superior convergence rate and performance over conventional DRL counterparts in terms of reducing the operation cost of HMES and handling the system operating constraints. Finally, we provide some insights into the role of representation learning in DRL, speculating that it can reorganize the original state space into a well-structured and cluster-aware geometric representation, thereby smoothing and facilitating the learning process of DRL.

Distributionally Robust Frequency-Constrained Microgrid Scheduling Towards Seamless Islanding

Unscheduled islanding events of microgrids result in the transition between grid-connected and islanded modes and induce a sudden and unknown power imbalance, posing a threat to frequency security. To achieve seamless islanding, we propose a distributionally robust frequency-constrained microgrid scheduling model considering unscheduled islanding events. This model co-optimizes unit commitments, power dispatch, upward/downward primary frequency response reserves, virtual inertia provisions from renewable energy sources (RESs), deloading ratios of RESs, and battery operations, while ensuring the system frequency security during unscheduled islanding. We establish an affine relationship between the actual power exchange and RES uncertainty in grid-connected mode, describe RES uncertainty with a Wasserstein-metric ambiguity set, and formulate frequency constraints under uncertain post-islanding power imbalance as distributionally robust quadratic chance constraints, which are further transformed by a tight conic relaxation. We solve the proposed mixed-integer convex program and demonstrate its effectiveness through case studies.

Conservative Sparse Neural Network Embedded Frequency-Constrained Unit Commitment With Distributed Energy Resources

The increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) will decrease the rotational inertia of the power system and further degrade the system frequency stability. To address the above issues, this paper leverages the advanced neural network (NN) to learn the frequency dynamics and incorporates NN to facilitate system reliable operation. This paper proposes the conservative sparse neural network (CSNN) embedded frequency-constrained unit commitment (FCUC) with converter-based DERs, including the learning and optimization stages. In the learning stage, it samples the inertia parameters, calculates the corresponding frequency, and characterizes the stability region of the sampled parameters using the convex hulls to ensure stability and avoid extrapolation. For conservativeness, the positive prediction error penalty is added to the loss function to prevent possible frequency requirement violation. For the sparsity, the NN topology pruning is employed to eliminate unnecessary connections for solving acceleration. In the optimization stage, the trained CSNN is transformed into mixed-integer linear constraints using the big-M method and then incorporated to establish the data-enhanced model. The case study verifies 1) the effectiveness of the proposed model in terms of high accuracy, fewer parameters, and significant solving acceleration; 2) the stable system operation against frequency violation under contingency.

Incommensurate-commensurate magnetic phase transition in the double tungstate Li2Co(WO4)2

Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction measurements have been performed on polycrystalline Li2Co(WO4)2 samples. Under zero magnetic field, two successive magnetic transitions at TN1 ~ 9.4 K and TN2 ~ 7.4 K are observed. The magnetic ordering temperatures gradually decrease as the magnetic field increases. Neutron diffraction reveals that Li2Co(WO4)2 enters an incommensurate magnetic state with a temperature dependent k between TN1 and TN2. The magnetic propagation vector locks-in to a commensurate value k = (1/2, 1/4, 1/4) below TN2. The antiferromagnetic structure is refined at 1.7 K with Co2+ magnetic moment 2.8(1) uB, consistent with our first-principles calculations.

Distributionally Robust Frequency Constrained Scheduling for an Integrated Electricity-Gas System

Power systems are shifted from conventional bulk generation toward renewable generation. This trend leads to the frequency security problem due to the decline of system inertia. On the other hand, natural gas-fired units are frequently scheduled to provide operational flexibility due to their fast adjustment ability. The interdependence between power and natural gas systems is thus intensified. In this paper, we study the frequency constrained scheduling problem from the perspective of an integrated electricity-gas system under variable wind power. We propose a distributionally robust (DR) chance constrained optimization model to co-optimize the unit commitment and virtual inertia provision from wind farm systems. This model incorporates both frequency constraints and natural gas system (NGS) operational constraints and addresses the wind power uncertainty by designing DR joint chance constraints. We show that this model admits a mixed-integer second-order cone programming. Case studies demonstrate that the proposed approach can provide a highly reliable and computationally efficient solution and show the importance of incorporating NGS operational constraints in the frequency constrained scheduling problem.

A Data-Driven Warm Start Approach for Convex Relaxation in Optimal Gas Flow

In this letter, we propose a data-driven warm start approach, empowered by artificial neural networks, to boost the efficiency of convex relaxations in optimal gas flow. Case studies show that this approach significantly decreases the number of iterations for the convex-concave procedure algorithm, and optimality and feasibility of the solution can still be guaranteed.

Antiferromagnetism of Double Molybdate LiFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$

The magnetic properties of the spin-5/2 double molybdate LiFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$ have been characterized by heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron powder diffraction techniques. Unlike the multiferroic system LiFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$ which exhibits two successive magnetic transitions, LiFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$ undergoes only one antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N$ ~ 23.8 K. Its antiferromagnetic magnetic structure with the commensurate propagation vector k = (0, 0.5, 0) has been determined. Density functional theory calculations confirm the antiferromagnetic ground state and provide a numerical estimate of the relevant exchange coupling constants.

Resolving Head-On Conflicts for Multi-Agent Path Finding with Conflict-Based Search

Conflict-Based Search (CBS) is a popular framework for solving the Multi-Agent Path Finding problem. Some of the conflicts incur a foreseeable conflict in one or both of the children nodes when splitting on them. This paper introduces a new technique, namely the head-on technique that finds out such conflicts, so they can be processed more efficiently by resolving the conflict with the potential conflict all together in one split. The proposed technique applies to all CBS-based solvers. Experimental results show that the head-on technique improves the state-of-the-art MAPF solver CBSH.

Sequential data assimilation with multiple nonlinear models and applications to subsurface flow

Complex systems are often described with competing models. Such divergence of interpretation on the system may stem from model fidelity, mathematical simplicity, and more generally, our limited knowledge of the underlying processes. Meanwhile, available but limited observations of system state could further complicates one's prediction choices. Over the years, data assimilation techniques, such as the Kalman filter, have become essential tools for improved system estimation by incorporating both models forecast and measurement; but its potential to mitigate the impacts of aforementioned model-form uncertainty has yet to be developed. Based on an earlier study of Multi-model Kalman filter, we propose a novel framework to assimilate multiple models with observation data for nonlinear systems, using extended Kalman filter, ensemble Kalman filter and particle filter, respectively. Through numerical examples of subsurface flow, we demonstrate that the new assimilation framework provides an effective and improved forecast of system behaviour.

Drug hypersensitivity caused by alteration of the MHC-presented self-peptide repertoire

Idiosyncratic adverse drug reactions are unpredictable, dose independent and potentially life threatening; this makes them a major factor contributing to the cost and uncertainty of drug development. Clinical data suggest that many such reactions involve immune mechanisms, and genetic association studies have identified strong linkage between drug hypersensitivity reactions to several drugs and specific HLA alleles. One of the strongest such genetic associations found has been for the antiviral drug abacavir, which causes severe adverse reactions exclusively in patients expressing the HLA molecular variant B*57:01. Abacavir adverse reactions were recently shown to be driven by drug-specific activation of cytokine-producing, cytotoxic CD8+ T cells that required HLA-B*57:01 molecules for their function. However, the mechanism by which abacavir induces this pathologic T cell response remains unclear. Here we show that abacavir can bind within the F-pocket of the peptide-binding groove of HLA-B*57:01 thereby altering its specificity. This supports a novel explanation for HLA-linked idiosyncratic adverse drug reactions; namely that drugs can alter the repertoire of self-peptides presented to T cells thus causing the equivalent of an alloreactive T cell response. Indeed, we identified specific self-peptides that are presented only in the presence of abacavir, and that were recognized by T cells of hypersensitive patients. The assays we have established can be applied to test additional compounds with suspected HLA linked hypersensitivities in vitro. Where successful, these assays could speed up the discovery and mechanistic understanding of HLA linked hypersensitivities as well as guide the development of safer drugs.
